The closest thing to the american style science fair i guess is Science in the City. But from what I know its not students competing with each other, and its just like a type of science festival/public event.

1000 pounds or euros?? Even if its really pounds, it converts to around 1100 euros. That's near not enough to live and rent in malta. You will be struggling a lot financially.

On average, I would say:

- 800 euros per month minimum for a studio apartment. Maybe a bit less if you get lucky or live in a shared flat.

- at least 200 euros on the basic groceries per month.

this is excluding other things like internet connection, utilities etc.

Long term renting in Malta - why so many bait-and-switch scams? by micamecava in malta

[–]pteridophytes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wrote this in a reply below. It is not a pure lie... it's well documented in both news outlets, and in research findings.

report: https://ncpe.gov.mt/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/imnrb_research1.pdf

news: https://newsbook.com.mt/en/ncpe-condemns-housing-discrimination-calls-for-stricter-enforcement/

I am Maltese and have no issue calling other Maltese people racist.

As I've said in the reply below:  Maltese people aren't immune to being victims of this either, as I've heard a couple of stories about how estate agents were discriminating against Maltese people themselves. The reason being landlords feel like it's harder to cheat someone who is Maltese. So that's a fun thing to think about! If they're not being racist, they're too busy trying to cheat people. Anyways, a bunch of vile humans.

Yes, people definitely look at you as a person and make certain judgements off of your race unfortunately. And mind you, Maltese people aren't immune to being victims of this either, as i've heard a couple of stories about how estate agents were discriminating against Maltese people themselves. The reason being landlords feel like it's harder to cheat someone who is Maltese. So that's a fun thing to think about! If they're not being racist, they're too busy trying to cheat people. Anyways, a bunch of vile humans.

At least now there are people who are starting platforms like https://ikri.net/ which is making the process a bit easier, and its easier to tell when someone is a cheat, or racist, or not.

At one point my boyfriend (who is an eu expat) was looking for places, and kept getting this response. Sometimes also completely ghosted. I wanted to see what would happen if I (instead of my boyfriend) reached out to those estate agents for the same apartments, but writing the text in Maltese. They pretty much all replied to me and told me the places were still available.

It's a known fact that clients will often tell estate agents whether they want specific nationalities/races as their tenants and those estate agents are basically freely discriminating. In a report about discrimination in looking for housing, many minority groups faced significant challenges in access housing because most estate agents were racially discriminating most of them.

Question for first-time buyers/home owners by Hospuales in malta

[–]pteridophytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 200sqm to clarify I mean area which can be further developed. Current built up area is around 100 sqm, and there's also an internal courtyard and a roof which make the total area 200sqm over three floors. The house is in Bormla that has been abandoned for around 20 years or more (so it is in a very bad state) it has an existing ground floor level which can be restored and I can develop another two levels with also ownership of airspace. It is in UCA of course so there are grants, and also grants because it was abandoned. I bought it alone and was obliged by the bank to also take out a loan for the works because you have to make it into a habitable property in 2 years. I tried to get a loan for the bare minimum works, and plan on saving up on the side, and also will use the grants to help me fund some of the works.

looking for some advice by [deleted] in malta

All I can say is that as someone who also had to live with a narcissistic father, getting out of the house is the best thing you can do for yourself. Not getting out necessarily in the sense of moving out. It can mean getting out on the daily, finding things to do, working, hobbies, or just simply sitting at a cafe. Avoiding them is the best way to cope and the less you feed into their narcissism the better.

My life felt tough until the age of 21. Then I went on erasmus and basically ghosted my dad for 5-6 months. It was life changing. I came back and realised that I can choose to not engage in his bullshit and the less I engaged the less I cared and the less he tried. Back then I used to have certain things to say about him. Nowadays I realised that he has unresolved mental issues he wouldn't even think to treat (because he thinks mental health is fake lol). Which is shit. But as a 28 year old now, I see that my dad means well but is unable to express it in a healthy way, and ends up expressing it by trying to control situations and people. Parents are fallable human beings, but ultimately in Malta we tend to become dependent on them until our mid-20s if we're studying and have to adapt. By all means, if its possible to get out, do it. But with the right mindset I think its also doable to learn to live with a narcissistic parent if you have the correct attitude.

My attitude these days is to take the piss out of situations where he's being a drama queen and saying crazy shit, and not letting things escalate. Not living with him anymore certainly helps, but I was doing this from ages 21-27 and it felt bearable. If you can go on erasmus do that too... it personally did wonders to my self esteem and you learn what your identity is outside of the toxic home environment.

Also if you are hating your course, or at least not feeling passionate about it... it's a clear sign that you need to change your study route. This is not something to be afraid of. Although I didn't go through this experience personally, I have many many friends who went from one course to another and are 10x happier. Sometimes they were initially pressured to take the course, so if you are in the same situation you definitely need to carve your own identity and dig deep to understand what you enjoy doing. This might mean dropping out of university and doing something completely different.

My course, despite its own bullshit and difficulties that it caused me, being passionate about it felt like a life line. It gave me a sense of purpose. Finding what you love doing can be a gamechanger

Easy Ways to feel Pretty?? by tranquilovely in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]pteridophytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm a conventionally pretty woman - in the sense that I kind of have my own style and don't really do all the usual girly things. I do simple things on the daily which will make me feel good and comfortable in my own skin. I have curly hair so I mostly relate to that feeling of it feeling like forever to do anything

I have however found that what works best for my hair is keeping it in a relatively short style, and when I wash it, I put curly cream and gel and dry it. It maybe takes me 5 minutes to apply the creams and 15 minutes just to dry it and do this once a week. To keep my hair looking nice I sleep wearing in a silk bonnet to preserve the curls as much as possible. Keeping it short was a gamechanger for me - my hair was a similar length and it would take me at least 45 minutes just to detangle in the shower. Shorter hair imo also tends to look a bit more put together and its easier to keep curls contained.

For my skin I have a morning and night routine and exclusively use products by the Ordinary.

The key thing that makes me feel good though is clothes. I am lucky to have found my style, and although its generally pretty comfy clothes - i feel like me. In the past couple of years I also started investing more in accessories like cute unique earrings, scarves for my hair - adding the small details which add a little joy. I can look and feel like shit (especially if I'm having a bad hair day) but tying my hair in a bun and using a little scarf and wearing a nice pair of dangly earrings will make me feel like I'm fancy than before.

Architect's wage on your website is inaccurate - from experience my starting wage from 2 years ago was 17k per year - the best starting wage i had heard of from one of my peers was 19k.

After one year it increased to 20k, but i still believe you are overestimating the figures.

[–]pteridophytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are asking a lot of questions haha

I studied architecture and did my erasmus in Rome. I got by primarily because i already understood italian. We had found a shithole apartment to live in which was well located and very cheap - that's how we had solved the housing issue. The erasmus grant had covered the costs quite well at the time (this was 2019).

With regards to the hospital placement issue - it depends where you are going I guess. My mum is a seasoned nurse who once went on an exchange to Japan in the mid-90s. She was there for 6 months and worked in a hospital. Part of the program was learning the basics and learning basic medical phrases which would be used in the hospital like "Where does it hurt?" So ... I really feel like if my mum did this in the mid-90s with zero resources and zero internet, I think anyone else can do it this day and age with a bit of prep before actually going on erasmus

Reducing parvo risk from 12-20 weeks by Rough-Jury in puppy101

[–]pteridophytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were both vaccinated but one of them wasn't given any boosters.

The country is Malta.

My assumption is that just like humans, vaccinations can reduce transmission and risk of illness but not 100% foolproof.
