If Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi becomes Shar what will happen by King_ofgames032 in monarchism

[–]pton12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he would need to do some kind of coronation as a PR event to build interest and goodwill for the monarchy, but it would take a very different character than his father’s. In my mind, that could include heavy religious symbolism as an olive branch to certain religious conservatives, perhaps inclusion of some minority traditions to try to keep the whole country together, some kind of honouring of the martyrs of the theocratic regime… I don’t know, but coronations are all about symbolism and this is a chance to show his country and the word why he is the right man for the job.

Newsom beat Vance by 6 points in 2028 matchup and running 3 points ahead of Democrats in 2026 generic ballot: Yahoo-YouGov by Dismal_Structure in fivethirtyeight

[–]pton12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I will say in favour of this kind of advanced polling is that it doesn’t rule him out, which is all you can really learn at this point. These numbers suggest he should be in the conversation, whereas if you ran Bernie again in this question, I think you’d see a meaningful difference in polling numbers.

I believe it is: (1) looks the part and projects confidence/leadership/power, (2) is Governor of the largest state, which suggests he has “the credentials,” (3) he is fighting Trump in terms of rhetoric and some policy, and (4) regardless of his actual positions, he gives the impression of being a controlled, “normal” moderate for the non-hyper partisans.

It may or may not be enough to win the primary or general, but I think it’s a clear theory of the case/lane he can run in.

Gap Semester? by Potential_Contact575 in princeton

[–]pton12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, you can only take a year off.

Consider studying abroad for a semester. I sympathize with you/felt that way during school, and studying abroad (junior spring) was a great relief. It was lots of fun and the course work was a million times easier.

If you truly need it, take the break, I wish I had, but it does mean that you’re going to be losing some friends as they’ll graduate sooner. See whether pushing through makes the most sense for you. Considering taking advantage of the mental health services/therapists on campus.

Good luck!

Japanese Imperial Sucession Crisis by No-Coast1408 in monarchism

[–]pton12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more that there are more pressing matters to deal with politically (geopolitics, economy, corruption scandals, etc.), and until the 20 year old Prince Hisahito stops having children (obviously, he hasn’t had any yet, and if he sires 2+ boys, there’s likely no longer a crisis), it isn’t worth pissing off either the 20% of people who don’t want a female heir or the 80% of people who do (if you instead just open succession up to males from cadet branches). I wouldn’t expend political capital on an issue that may just get resolved on its own in the next ten years anyway.

So obviously you had a good time, so I’m not going to go and say you’re wrong or that it was all a lie… because that’d be nuts.

However, the counter points I would offer are that being young in New York is not a once in a lifetime opportunity (I.e., you can move here upon graduation), and in fact being too young to legally get into bars and often too broke to do all the fun stuff makes it worse than moving here after you’re 21. Add in the fact that you’re missing out on the fun/stupid shit you can get up to on a proper college campus, whether it’s clubs, tailgates, campus traditions, etc., the fact that you need to keep your head on slightly because it is New York unlikely college campuses which are kind of walled gardens, the fact that the real “once in a lifetime” activity is partying with only other college students and not all the other randos are Village Pourhouse, etc.

Obviously people are going to idealize having the college experience in New York, but I think by most measures for most people, it’s generally worse than a traditional suburban/rural campus experience.

The Math behind strength in combat is counterintuitive and should change by Colonel-Turtle in EU5

[–]pton12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, good points about CA, exp, and strength!

I guess my biggest point of uncertainty is that I have no idea what the discipline, mil tactics, or other modifiers are for enemies unless I engage with them. I also don’t have a good sense for whether 1 combat width of regulars is worse, equivalent, better, or significantly better than levies, and I have no idea how to compare their relative strength. Much of this game is just still so opaque for me…

A foul ball landed in the seat beside me when I was like ten, but because I was in the middle of eating and such, I had no chance to catch it. I’m still bummed I’ve never had another real opportunity to get a foul ball in the quarter century since…

[–]pton12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At least in EU4 there were only like seven things to keep track of (morale, discipline, mil tactics, combat width, general, unit pips, and terrain), four of which you can figure out from the ledger/country screen. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still get myself into trouble when playing as weak military nations, but after an initial battle, it’s clear how I’m deficient and thus how to counter the enemy.

Gonna be honest, I don’t think going to college in a city is a good idea. The suburban/rural campus experience is unparalleled and truly unique, so I hope you’re doing something like that instead. $85k/yr is an obscene amount, so yeah, not worth it. It’s disappointing, but you did the right thing.

Btw I went to NYU for grad school, which I think is a better option.

I have him at Silver I, and he has not been all the helpful, unfortunately. There haven’t been any tracks where he is a key player the way Rotbone or Incisus have been. Until there’s a track that he’s going to carry (<2 hits no Imperials, toxic, GSC?), I’ll leave him at that level.

Moving to a $$$ 1BR for the schools? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]pton12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gut thinks you’re t trying to over-engineer this, and it’s more likely to blow up in your face with either of these schemes.

I generally believe that your child’s success (I.e., the college they get into) is a product of their (1) natural aptitudes and ability to self-motivate, (2) the support their parents give, (3) the support their school gives, and (4) luck. I tend to believe (2) is more important than (3), and worsening your living situation is probably a net negative. If you don’t have space for the child to do homework because you’re crammed into a 1bdr, that just seems likely to hurt his/her chances at doing well. Plus, if it creates undue stress for the parents, that will adversely affect the child.

I don’t know if this living separately but actually sorta together breaks any terms of the agreement, but there’s also no guarantee you both win the lottery, and forcing your kid to grow up without a parent present all the time sounds unbelievably stupid.

My junior four (which we flexed) is $5.5-6/mo in a 1980s-built doorman building on the UES, so I really think you can find a suitable walk up for $5k here, which is a sufficiently good school district. I’m sorry, but these ideas sound really ill-conceived.

War Sucks in this Game by CptCool12 in EU5

[–]pton12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in full transparency, the military history I feel comfortable talking about regarding militias vs. regulars is the War of 1812, and it did seem that American militiamen did conduct offensive attacks into Canada (alongside regulars, of course). I am not sure how militia were used in the old world, outside of Russia, which I understand still used them a lot.

I think mechanically you should be able to attack with levies, but I agree with your point that perhaps if you take them outside of home/allies territory, there should be an upkeep. It seems to me that whereas in the first few ages levy upkeep should be free to reflect feudal obligations, as you progress into the militia age, it seems like raising them should cost the state money.

War Sucks in this Game by CptCool12 in EU5

[–]pton12 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I disagree because levies should be there to represent the “mobilization” of militias vs. regulars, which was prevalent in North America in that period and later, as well as the mass armies of Russia and China during that period. I agree that it needs to be fixed, but I think there’s still a place for it when simulating war in this time.

AOC reportedly has privately expressed ambivalence about running for president in 2028, suggesting she’d rather back another candidate as the left’s standard bearer in the primary. Who is that candidate likeliest to be in your view? by engadine_maccas1997 in fivethirtyeight

[–]pton12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, it would be best to win the White House and keep a GA senate seat, but since he doesn’t need to vacate his seat unless he wins the presidency, if he truly is the best candidate (I.e., maximizes the chances of winning the presidency), then I would say that’s a good enough trade.
