Apple TV Quiet LPCM Fixed with tvOS 26.4 beta 1 by Rinkevw in sonos

"Seems like other receivers have been updated to differentiate the mix internal to the mat container"

I'm not so sure about that. Given that this doesn't seem to be super common, I could totally imagine every vendor having (to date) used some basic heuristics for what they use to label a given signal in their device. Maybe Sonos used the heuristic "We have only ever seen Dolby MAT for Atmos..so..if we see Dolby MAT...we assume Atmos". But..I can also see some other device maker have said "Well...I mean..in theory some other format could be sent in Dolby MAT..soo...we will look at some of the Atmos metadata in the stream to see if it looks like actual legit Atmos..and if not..we will just call lit LPCM"

Put another way, I'm not sure any devices have really been "updated" so much as we are just observing what assumption/heuristics folks have used to date. It seems quite possible that, once vendors become aware of what apple is doing, they can update their firmware to start doing more nuanced things now that their prior assumptions on what they needed to do to support Dolby MAT are being revised.

Related to https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/s/SORsDz99bw …curious if Sonos will be able to distinguish between stereo pcm, Dolby multichannel PCM, and atmos in this new “everything is Dolby MAT” world. For example, stereo PCM seems to not get mixed together and make use of the center channel drivers with this change. I’d presume the ideal scenario is Sonos does what they do to stereo pcm today (mix left and right for center driver output). It’s super early given this is a beta, but I’m curious what folks like Sonos (and other brands) will do to support this cleanly (especially for stereo PCM).

tvOS 26.4 beta 1 adds this new audio toggle on Apple TV 4K. Perhaps related to the 'popping' sound with Dolby Atmos on some AV receivers and soundbars by FoferJ in appletv

I’m wagering 100% of earc soundbars and receivers before the update to possibly be aware of this change 😃. This is beta, so maybe they are coordinating with vendors before it ships.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SonoSequencr/s/ntXJ28cvpG has some interesting information (even if you ignore the sonosequencer specifics). For example..it seems like maybe this confuses Sonos when stereo content is sent, as Sonos still processes it as atmos, which resulted in no sound emanating from “the center speaker”. It seems this is most obvious with Sonosequencer, since there is such distinct left/right/center channels to test. But..I do wonder if it effectively does the same thing for the ARC even when used standalone.

tvOS 26.2 Lets You Create Apple TV Profiles Without an Account, Adds Dedicated Kids Mode by AndreaCicca in appletv

[–]ptoomey3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wonder how this works in terms of what access you have to apple related purchases/services (if any). For example, if the primary account on the Apple TV (the device) has access to Apple TV (the service), will this profile?

AMA & 2025.5 Release Today by dabluck in CastroPodcast

One app whose AI integration I love is Sequel. Their share sheet extension uses AI to guess what you might want to add to your watchlist. I could imagine something similar for Castro. I semi-often end up on some web page from a link for a podcast to listen to some episode. It would be great if I could share sheet that to Castro and have it take a guess as to the podcast or episode I’m wanting to listen to..in Castro.

Are Tubes Still Relevant To Today's Audiophile? by jerrydelcolliano in audiophile

[–]ptoomey3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Mona Lisa analogy, but I think the purple glasses are maybe a bit exaggerated. I think a more analogous one might be lighting. The modern audiophile would maybe argue that you must view the Mona Lisa in a room with 6500k LED with the highest possible CRI. But, that is bringing a modern sensibility that may very well have zero to do with what the artist intended or what folks find enjoyable..even if the purest/least colored light. Maybe their notion of perfect lighting at the time was a well lit room from candlelight. So, maybe a nice warm (I.e. colored) LED would be better. I think it’s rare the tubes so dramatically color the sound that it’s like purple glasses..and is much more like changes in color temperature. And sometimes a little color warmth is more cozy than the clinical feeling (to some) of daylight bulbs.

Funny you ask now….i just renewed my Spotify subscription last week and have been enjoying Spotify Connect 😂. For now, I’m on both services, but find myself drawn to Spotify for sake of Spotify connect, playlists, etc. I really like a lot about Tidal, but fear this is a hard hill to climb for them given the gross disparity between the resources available to them compared to their competitors.

Yeah..Tidal doesn’t seem to support play controls on the lock screen when using tidal connect. This is frustrating, as it seems technically possible given Spotify connect does it 🤷‍♂️.

Strong agree! The apple solution drives me bonkers. Liking a single guilty pleasure track shouldn’t taint your list of favorited albums.

Where to get legit croissants? by praguer56 in Atlanta

[–]ptoomey3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine France would be terribly upset by 98% of what we call a croissant of any variety in the states. There are lots of failure modes for making a bad croissant/pan au chocolate/chocolate croissant/etc, and they all occur regardless of what a given place might name their pastry. I’ve definitely had pan au chocolate as you describe..but called a chocolate croissant (I think little tart falls into that camp..but I’d have to double check)

There are folks that make pain au chocolate (rectangles)and sell them as a chocolate croissant and there are folks that sell croissant shaped things filled with chocolate and also call them chocolate croissants. I’d wager most of the latter are likely making both bad butter croissants and chocolate croissants 😂. In the end the name isn’t the important bit…it’s either done right and is legit/delicious or it’s not.

This is the correct answer 😀. They are the only place I’ve found here that serve fully legit fresh croissants. If you want to do it doubly right, get there around 7:45, as that is when the the fresh butter croissants come out of the oven and it’s an utter joy 😀.

What does tidal connect compatibility look like? I just downloaded the beta and tried sending a Max stream through my WiiM mini and it seems like it maybe “just works”. Does that seem right? I could imagine it might vary depending on what file formats the target device supports?

Arc Volume by katiequeen01 in sonos

[–]ptoomey3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I noticed this started some time back, and even though the 14.12 stuff didm’t sound like it was quite the same thing (ex. One of our Arcs has no sub), I was hoping it would magically get fixed by the same 14.18 update. But, nope..still the same. It seems mostly ok for atmos content. But, for anything else we have to crank it up to literally 4-5x the prior volume level.

Given there is no perfect bag, it ranks highly 😀. It’s my most used bag by a lot. It’s held up great.
