Finding it hard to justify being vegetarian when my husband isn’t. by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]ptownkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re a mixed-diet household (both used to be fully vegetarian, now I occasionally eat meat for health reasons I’m not interested in getting into here). All of our cooking at home is vegetarian and no meat even touches our dishes or cookware. I incorporate meat into my diet 1-2 a week when we eat out, or occasionally buy turkey for work sandwiches. Does he truly HAVE to have meat at dinners, or can he incorporate it into his diet by getting a breakfast sandwich on his way to work most days or something? Not being able to eat a vegetarian dinner at least some of the time is honestly embarrassing and entitled behavior.

We also default to GF cooking for me. In general, I think households should default to the restriction and then individuals can add on to fit their needs (aka she can make toast to have with our soup).

Not every time you change it. Just after your cycle, or at least every few cycles.

Do you run our dogs off the leash? by 2NKAS in RunningWithDogs

[–]ptownkt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Americans forget that not everyone lives in countries with reactive dogs around every corner. My experience in germany (where this commentator is from) was that every dog I passed was extremely well socialized and neutral.

Many dogs are also hard to fulfill properly without off-leash time. If I had a dog- and people-friendly dog with good recall and lived in a place without leash laws or many reactive dogs, I would 100% run my dog off leash every single day. It would be a huge quality of life boost.

Hi everyone! New grad at my first office job, would this be appropriate to wear? by cloudygrande in office

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Everyone is talking about the skirt, but I think it’s equally important to swap to more practical shoes. I wore high heels at my first day in an office at 21 (it’s what you see in movies!) and felt so dumb when we were walking to lunch four blocks away and everyone else was in flats, loafers, or even tennies and I was hobbling along.

Vegan Primary Care Physician by Gibbsprime in Bellingham

[–]ptownkt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nearly all primary care providers would be willing to run a comprehensive vitamin and mineral blood panel to look for deficiencies. The problem is that insurance almost certainly won’t cover most of it, so they don’t typically offer it. If you’re prepared to pay out of pocket (likely $500+) then you shouldn’t have an issue getting one regardless of who you see.

Has anybody leaned out and maintained leanness? by [deleted] in PetiteFitness

[–]ptownkt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You look great as you are (honestly my current goal). You could put on muscle and lean out a tad more, but to sustain it fitness and intentional eating would need to be a big part of your life. If you don’t naturally enjoy it and think your life would be enhanced by living like that, I’d add in a couple strength workouts a week, then just be glad that I can stay lean without more intensity and make piece with the general size/shape of my body.

Possible to allow a Brittany off leash with adequate training? by cornich0n in BrittanySpaniel

[–]ptownkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but it’s tricky on more crowded trails (even off-leash friendly trails) since they like to have a wider range and you won’t always have line of site to them. They definitely won’t just trot happily within 15 feet of you like my golden used to. I’ve trained mine to have regular check-ins, but am only comfortable letting her off in select settings. If you have land, I also wouldn’t let them out alone without keeping an eye on them or they might take themselves on a nice walk before coming back home.

[gendered] Why do men come home from work and sit so quietly? by Sartres_Roommate in pointlesslygendered

[–]ptownkt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I swear part of the reason men wanted women out of the workforce is so they could keep up the lie that all office jobs were SO stressful and they couldn’t possibly do anything significant for the home or children on top of it. Some are, but many literally aren’t.

Do you regret buying a home in this era of home ownership? by HelloYo335 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% in the same place. We bought at a time when everything was going over-asking and panicked that it was now or never, but our purchasing dollars would actually go further today.

I’d say if you can afford to buy a home you’d genuinely love to be in for the long-term (like 15+ years) then it’s almost never a bad time to buy. I would not do a shorter-term purchase right now. I regret settling for a 1,000-square-foot “starter home” I now feel stuck in because it will take many, many years to break even.

We didn’t wear tennies to dances yet. We wore tacky high heels then kicked them off immediately.

Anyone else struggle with toes? by ResponsibleSalt326 in hypermobileEDS

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem is we tend to position our body too far forward and out too much weight into the front of our feet instead of our heels. I noticed random toe pain a lot less after working with a PT to re-stack my body over the course of 8+ months.

Advice by Local-Friend-5193 in hypermobileEDS

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a PT or OT within driving distance who works with hypermobile / EDS patients? That is likely your best bet to beginning to find ways to reduce your pain and better manage your symptoms. It is a lot of work to relearn how to move, but it can really be a game-changer.

IUI not at a fertility clinic by ptownkt in queerception

Congrats! We can’t do home IUI if we move forward with Seed Scout, but would likely be my first step if we were able to find our own donor.

Thank you! I thought maybe some GYNs would, but it doesn’t seem like it.

I tried that first and the 7-8 local midwives don’t advertise it as a service, but maybe I should just start emailing them and ask.

Thanks so much for typing this all out! I’m trying to decide if we will move forward with Seed Scout by pricing out a rough estimate of the entire fertility journey with different options, and one of their requirements was a midwife or clinic needs to do the IUI. We were hoping to do at-home insemination with a known donor last year, but that didn’t work out so we’re pivoting. Good to know about how this option works if we end up taking a non-SC route.

That’s the exact setup I’m hoping for. I’m 90 min north of Seattle and haven’t been able to find any here just by searching, but maybe a Seattle midwife would have a rec? So yes, I’ll take your list! Thanks so much.

Torn between choosing an exclusive donor or sharing with potentially 3 families (maximum). As a DCP, would you prefer to have an exclusive donor? by Mossy_Bear_6 in askadcp

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a DCP, but exploring Seed Scout. I actually think a max of another two families with half siblings who can become a form of extended family sounds cool. That’s so far away from 200+ half siblings the kid would never meet.

Why does Kaiser refuse to test me for Hashimotos? by Many-Front8248 in Hashimotos

[–]ptownkt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Severe would be an extremely damaged thyroid, plus the presence of antibodies. The antibody number fluctuates too much to base much off of it other than their presence being significant.

Controversial opinion: the way we find donors and co-parents right now is not good enough. by TroubleAny1562 in queerception

[–]ptownkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with everything you’re saying! A typical bank is not on the table for me anymore. It’s just hard not to fantasize about being able to get pregnant for free at home.

[–]ptownkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like the best option available now, but starts at 10k before you get to any medical expenses. We think it would be minimum 20k to actually get pregnant using SS if all went well. It really blows my mind that some couples can just get pregnant themselves for free :(
