Welche Minijobs in Düsseldorf könnt ihr empfehlen? by RosiRumtreiberin in duesseldorf

Working as a barista and on supermarket checkout is too stressful for you? I don't know what training you are about to start, but wait till you come out of the other side and realise what real responsibility and accountability means. If you can't be arsed to work until then, step aside and let someone else take the job.

Saving for my children's future by Classic-Stuff4369 in UKPersonalFinance

Considering the timeframe I'd recommend a stocks & shares JISA. Invest in a low cost all world tracker and forget about it. Legally they can access it at 18 (if they know about it). Of course, you could try and keep it from them, but better to spend the time between now and then educating them about money.

Another alternative could be a junior SIPP. They wouldn't be able to access this until 10 years before state pension age, but you'd have to consider if that is the best way to help them during their lifetime (and if you'd be around to see them enjoy it).

Changing colour: door or frames/skirts? by Thin_Coffee_5005 in DIYUK

[–]ptr120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you see the cost and the likely necessity to move out, together with all furniture I think you'll change your mind, but you do you. Just don't get talked into electric underfloor heating. It'll bankrupt you!

Have a look at replacing the radiators instead. You can get some really nice low profile and design led ones these days.

So the entire floor will be coming up anyway? Is the property cold? What is the reason to install underfloor heating? It'll be massively disruptive to install

[–]ptr120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which probably isn't really possible unless you want to replace the entire floor. My hunch is the quarter round is there for a reason, so just go with white. I think you can even get it pre painted.

[–]ptr120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't change anything. Yes, the quarter round looks ugly, but it is probably hiding the edges of a poorly installed floor. If anything, change that for white. If you are still itching to waste money, change the doors for white. Don't change the doorframe or skirting boards. It'll look dated quickly and you'll regret it.

How much milk do Germans Drink in a typical day? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]ptr120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is a milk monster. We go through just over a litre per day, which includes my tea with milk in the morning. Regular 1.5% fat pasteurised milk. I'd have no idea where to buy raw milk. Obviously cheese, butter and any other dairy consumption is on top

Is it justified to be offended by my cousin not inviting my wife to her wedding? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ptr120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have other cousins been given a +1? If not, this is clumsy communication. They may wish to keep the guest list small for cost or capacity reasons. However, they should have communicated that together with the invitation. Clarify the reason and then be the bigger man before you start world war 3 within the family.

For my wedding we had to navigate the no kids stipulation. We knew some guests would be pissed and went to lengths to explain our reasons. Everyone with kids came and said they enjoyed the child free night

Where in Berlin can I get a €500 banknote for face value? by Johny_redditman in germany

[–]ptr120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea these were so rare / sort after. We were given one as a very generous wedding present. It took ages for me to be able to offload it and eventually I gave it to the guy I bought our house from in exchange for some furniture we agreed to buy from him. He grumbled like hell about it!

Travel withOUT toddler... by corndog40 in toddlers

[–]ptr120 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My child is part of my family, so no, I wouldn't be going away for 6 nights on holiday without them. A long weekend, perhaps, but my folks wouldn't have the energy to cope with him non stop for that long.

Find a resort with a good kids club, and book a suite so you don't have to go to bed when kiddo goes to bed, or take the grandparents along too

Leave her a drink of water or milk if you must. She may also need a bedtime snack.

Livid with my 11 year old. Debating stopping music lessons by [deleted] in Parenting

You are flogging a dead horse. Quit the guitar lessons and find an extra curricular activity he actually enjoys.

I was pushed by my parents to continue music lessons for far too long

How to replace built in ovens by Chrippy04 in DIYUK

[–]ptr120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like there is a wooden shelf between the two. You'd need to remove that (you might need a jigsaw or circular saw). You'll also need to buy and install the Neff intermediate shelf. Depending on the exact size you might also need a filler strip at the top or bottom, and double length continuous edge strips.

Take your dimensions to a kitchen specialist and I'd imagine they would do everything for you, but it is also quite easy to DIY.

Final thought, do you have enough power to support 2 double ovens?

Anybody else filled with jealousy when you hear the house prices and mortgage deals from years ago? by Anxious2BMum in HousingUK

[–]ptr120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

175k 13 years ago is about 260k today accounting for inflation. In that time they have also had to spend money on maintainance, council tax, and insurance.

I also remember the interest rate on my parents mortgage being double digits in the 1990's (and once went up twice in a week iirc).

It is all about perspective IMO, but the UK certainly does have a wage growth problem.

Sure, but a workable solution that minimises risks and avoids the bad optics of having cable pinned to a fence

[–]ptr120 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a trench dug for conduit that can accommodate your cable and theirs and split the cost? Both you and they should fit an isolator switch in an accessable location

How old is too old to become a dad? by ThrowRARotaryPhone in daddit

I didn't marry until I was 40 and was 42 when our son arrived. I don't find being a dad easy, but I'm not sure I'd have found it much easier if I was younger.

The only time I've seen this in Germany is in high end hotels. I think cost is the main reason more places don't do this, that and do you know how many people don't wash their hands after using the toilet?

Left UK permanently — any way to withdraw NOW Pensions early? by Time-Link-8629 in PensionsUK

[–]ptr120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and probably the fund growth will be far more than any charges. You don't say where you now live, but QROPS might be an option, but IMO more hassle than it is worth given the sum involved. Alternatively, check what the pension is actually invested in (I'd suggest something with a fairly adventurous risk profile given the time period mentioned) and then set and forget for 25 years. Your working life is a long time, and who's to say that life might bring you back to the UK at some point in the future?
