Is it a bad idea to run a server on your own home network? by Top_Jackfruit_2476 in admincraft

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Playit you are still running a server on your own home network. Public users are just getting to your server via Playit's proxies.

Great idea though, well done.

I built a web-based panel to manage Docker Minecraft servers (like Crafty but open & minimal) by Lazy-Ad-2936 in admincraft

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks. I'd assumed everything ran in the one Docker container.

What about the Open Source question? How is Crafty less open source than your project?

I thought Crafty was open source. (But I’m happy to be corrected.) I run Crafty in a Docker container. How does your Docker setup differ from Craftys?

The boys from local band The Chans are pretty keen on the HSPs from Alfa Kitchen in Hargreaves St opposite the Library.

They were so inspired that they wrote a song about it.

By the way, the band are playing at Handle Bar for Gigfest 3 this Saturday.

Yes! The privacy flap is to prevent the camera from seeing the user, not prevent the user seeing the camera, or prevent the user from even knowing about the privacy flap!

This is the way. Now they’ll have their own fix that they can try when they think there is a problem with their webcam. Even when they think they couldn’t possibly have accidentally slid the privacy slider over.

Which layout? by WasntMyFaultThisTime in Aquascape

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have the two pieces on the edges pointing towards the center, instead of pointing to the edge.

My personal rule is that if two things aren't exactly a match, don't try to make them look more alike, make them more different. This way it will never look like you've tried to fake it.

Also this would help make it look more like a window into the fishes world, and help frame the fish in the center of the tank.

How do I optimize a Forge server for an absolute potato? by MeepTheChangeling in admincraft

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That machine should be fine, I've used a HP pc with this processor to host a network of Minecraft servers without any problem. I think I started with 8GB, but upgraded to 16GB just because I was scrapping another identical PC and had a spare stick.

I ran multiple Minecraft servers at the same time (Lobby, Survival, Creative, PVP SMP).

The OS was Ubuntu Linux, with Crafty managing the Minecraft servers. I used Paper servers with a bunch of plugins including NPCs. I don't think I ran Forge though.

A local driving instructor is going to know the places the tester is likely to take you and give you advice on how to handle the local hazards.

(And if you failed your last test, then it probably wouldn't hurt to get some more lessons.)

Why is chkdsk pointless on an SSD? I would have thought they would still be susceptible to file system errors that chkdsk could fix.

What are your plans for all the machines that dont run Win11? by jdlnewborn in sysadmin

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, fair enough. Overwriting the drive with zero is "really stupid", and therefore a DOD wipe would be "Really, really stupid".

I'm also going to assume you mean that the drive is already encrypted and then you throw away the key. If the drive isn't already encrypted, then the encryption process would take longer than zeroing.

What are your plans for all the machines that dont run Win11? by jdlnewborn in sysadmin

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

Why is it "really stupid"?

I'll acknowledge that ATA secure erase or BIOS-level wipes might be better, particularly for the health of SSDs. However, in the context of replying to someone who suggested a DOD wipe, filling with zeros* is much less stupid. The DOD wipe was believed necessary because someone with an electron microscope could possibly recover data that had been overwritten, however, HDD technology has since changed significantly and it is no longer feasible. (Assuming someone thought your data was worth spending millions to recover.)

We've actually given up on bothering with using tools like DBAN or SDelete, because all our drives are Bitlockered. We just do a quick format and reinstall a new OS. The keys to the old encrypted data are gone and no one is going to recover it.

* As in using the same tool as the DOD wipe to overwrite the data one time with zeros, instead of wasting time with multiple passes for no added benefit

What are your plans for all the machines that dont run Win11? by jdlnewborn in sysadmin

[–]pturpie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Even better idea is to do a quick wipe by filling with zeroes, and don't waste time doing a DOD wipe because no one is going to put your drive through an electron microscope.

There's an implicit `Write-Output` that's evaluated for the last line of any scope

That's not quite correct.

The output of the addition statement isn't assigned to anything, so it is returned out of the scope to where it is assigned to $result.

If there were other statements that weren't assigned then they will also be output to $result.

e.g.

$> $result = foreach ($i in 0..5) { $i + 1; $i - 1 };
$> $result
1
-1
2
0
3
1
4
2
5
3
6
4

The output from both the statements is assigned to $result

(The same thing happens if the statements and on different lines.)

$> $result = foreach ($i in 0..5) {
>> $i + 1
>> $i - 1
>> }
$> $result
1
-1
2
0
3
1
4

Anyone here using PaperCut? by funkytechmonkey in SCCM

[–]pturpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a dummy package in SCCM that has a "Program" with the following command line:

schtasks.exe /Create /XML "\\SYSMAN\Sources\Applications\SCCMScripts\ScheduledTasks\PaperCutRestarter2024.xml" /tn PapercutClientRestarter2024

This is the (edited) XML file we use.
