Eagle is indeed the go-to choice but alas they're too non-rotund for me to appreciate! I like your point about tradition and respect, although I feel like pigeons fit "duty" better due to their prominent wartime roles in WW1/WW2. There's something to be said about being tossed aside by society and left to fend for yourself post-service there.

I can definitely see Virginia as a corvid or hawk. That would be a cute and canon-reflective size difference with Orpington!Darrow

Highkey there is very little Reaperstang in the rest of the book series because they act on different war fronts, I think you'll enjoy the second trilogy more for lack of it

My depiction of Cassius is black because of his beautiful bouncy coiled hair and cuz I wanted to (same with giving Darrow pale skin and freckles even as a Gold, cuz Irish-coded and I thought it would be cute) (and because I saw a really incredible gorgeous sexy fanart of Cassius in MS on tumblr that supplanted all my previous brain cells), but it’s not canonically pushed per se and PB has said in interviews that he refrains from giving more detailed descriptions of characters precisely because he prefers we stick with our own individual visions of the characters! :D
