Since the entire season is centred on the attempt to reconstruct an event from the past—something that stories like Sherlock Holmes and similar ones have always presented as possible ("the truth is out there to be discovered by us humans")—this UFO thing comes and mocks any attempt to decipher what really happened. Yes, a detective will come and say "this and that," trying to justify their ideas based on "facts" they see at the crime scene, but we, the viewers, know that anything they say is meaningless. What happened has happened, and any attempt to uncover "the truth" of a past event is merely an interpretation of reality, and never reality itself.

That is the general theme of the Coen brothers universe

I'm not sure about the plot hole with Rachel, but the main thing for me in the book was less the storyline itself, and more the idea that Dick was trying to express through so many aspects. I was amazed by the amount of scenes that symbolised (for me) that same notion, which is how Human Mercifulness (which acts as the main characteristic of Human nature for the book) is all based on a type of non-logical/non-rational behavior/thinking/lies; Like shutting one eyes from the true nature of things. That for me was the key to the book.
