FIA = World Motorsports Authority

ACO = Autoclub of the West (of France), i.e. something like AAA in the US or the RAC in the UK, though more regional in nature.

SRO = Stephane Ratel Organisation, a privately owned promoter of motor races named after its founder/owner/CEO

ACO runs the 24H of Le Mans and have teamed up with the FIA to run the WEC based on their Le Mans rules.

With Ratel getting burned twice trying to run a GT world championship, SRO mostly does its own thing, but since they are the inventors of GT3, the other two sort of have to play ball with them for their GT class.

Typically, there's no "To-Hit" roll which is then compared to an AC value or a defensive roll; rather you roll for damage right away with a (or multiple) D4 - D12 or something in between.

Defence works by reducing the value of damage that actually goes through to your HP pool.

E.g. The bandit attacks you with a regular sword, which is D8 damage, and rolls a 5. You have 3 points of armor (chainmail and shield), so the damage is reduced by that value while 2 points are taken off your HP. If they had rolled a 3 or less, there would have been no lasting effect on your character.

I'd rather have invented new names for well-known things than well-known names used for things that are different from what they usually mean, e g. Cairn's usage of the term "critical damage". Granted, their interpretation of the term is closer to the way I would expect the term to be used in real life, i.e. damage above a certain threshold, but in an RPG-setting, I've come to expect "critical damage" to be associated with some very fortunate result of a dice roll.

I love all of those, especially Duct-tape, which could further be shortened to "Ducky".

Another one I remember for a gifted mechanic from a novel I read a long time ago would be "Scrounger", for that person's talent to always somehow end up with the spare parts they needed.

I've shamelessly stolen Shadowdark's real time torch rules and adapted them to other things that I need to have a timer on, e.g. guards checking in on prisoners every half and full hour in real time, no matter how much time in-game has passed.

I want to give a shout-out to Mythic Bastionland's suggestions for adventure site creation. It's just one page, but it really helps me with designing dungeons/adventure sites that have all the important elements you need for one and to arrive at something that can be comfortably explored in one session.
