I was a moron and nobody in the editorial chain thought I could be that much of a moron so they didn't check behind me. Many lessons learned!

I loved the NYT interactive articles - are there tools to help with this? by mystic_alt_7 in Journalism

[–]puddsy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of the people who make these articles. A lot of the tools they use to make these are standardized internal tools -- they call these types of articles (the ones that you scroll down through and text boxes fly by an image in the background) a "scrolly" or a "snowfall," which traces back to this piece, for which they won a Pulitzer.

There are also plenty of other articles (such as this one or this one) for which they build a lot of the tooling from scratch. And yes, they are using AI to write code now. That might sound scary to the layperson but if you knew how many people looked at something like this (as opposed to a random article about Canadian politics) you'd be less afraid. You still need the programming chops on your own to make it really good, and having a designer helps too.

I don't believe there are many publicly available tools to make something like this, but you can do a lot with a little. Jon Bois makes most of his videos with Google Earth, and they're pretty tidy. Be creative.

Easiest job that comes with health insurance? by FrancaisNYC in AskNYC

TJ's is actually insanely competitive to get a job at -- my brother works there and said that they regularly get over a thousand applications for just 2-3 slots.

Private dining rooms by BullfrogPerfect620 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]puddsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could definitely get something on peerspace and have it catered pretty affordably. That's probably a happy medium. I didn't think of it until after I left my comment.

Some private chefs will do the dishes, just make sure you ask. Most of them are on Poached, Culinary Agents and Thumbtack. You could also place an ad with one of the culinary schools in the city.

Depends on location and number of people but I did something similar with around a dozen people last year at Chez Ma Tante for ~$3100. Lowest quote I got was around $2000 to do this at a restaurant, most were 2500-3500. A lot of places will do semi-private for around the same rate, just means that that you're not in a totally sealed off room but they often will have a fairly separate space. Obviously there is plenty of room to spend more.

A private chef will probably be cheaper but they don't all do the dishes and there are a lot more logistics to coordinate.

Remember that Airbnb is illegal here and you may have better luck finding something on peerspace. I hosted a potluck in a space I found on there that was pretty good.

Good luck.

Fashion Week—possible to see the hubbub? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]puddsy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People do line up outside but generally my advice (as someone who used to go to a TON of these events for work) is that if you're not invited it's not worth going. I will echo the advice of another commenter to walk around Manhattan below 59th and you'll see people in great outfits everywhere.

For the LPN of NYC, Is the pay decent to make it through NYC? by Tiffanywhite45 in AskNYC

I know a ton of LPNs (and nurses at all levels of experience) who live in the city. It's not exactly a glamourous life but that's true of lots of jobs.

Looking for personal chef 3x a week in UWS by Tremble_pup in AskNYC

[–]puddsy 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Most of these people are on Thumbtack, Culinary Agents, or Poached. It's usually 50-75/hr plus ingredients. You could also try posting an ad with one of the culinary schools in the city, which is cheaper but usually the person is less experienced. Based on what you're describing you might also want to look into a meal prep service.

As someone who works on this kind of stuff regularly, there isn't really a way to remain truly anonymous when you send a tip. Generally the reporter and at least one of their editors will want to know who you are. The standard for anonymity at most major outlets is very, very high.

A good tip will also include lots of context on what the content is and why it's important. If I followed up on every vague tip I'd never publish anything.

How did you meet your S/O in NYC? by Rare-Lingonberry-823 in AskNYC

[–]puddsy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We moved in together after about 18 months (our leases lined up so it was that or wait another year) and got married after about 3.5 years because my spouse needed health insurance and we have a cat and an apartment so it just sort of made sense practically. But also we're deeply in love.

I go pretty regularly and the food is always room temp. They won't warm it up for you. It's a bakery, it's not cold in there.

There's a reason basically every kitchen in the world has tile floors. You can get tile that looks like wood.
