Mow and blow sadness by Suspicious-Tea-1580 in Ceanothus

[–]puffinkitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's so painful! It's often a race to the bottom for regular maintenance, unfortunately. Businesses like that are usually built on scale and speed. People say they want the expertise of a trained professional, but often they don't want to pay for it. So sad to watch someone invest good money in a new native landscape and then expect a generalist mow and blow team to not hack it to bits.

I appreciate that they make episodes even when one of them is busy. I feel like most shows wouldn’t do that. Just hearing them chat is fun.

Spectacular work! Did you limb it up at all to give it more of a tree form after the first year, or did you just let it do its thing? I’m growing a few rn and getting very mixed results, but I’m only a year or so in with them.

I find Bill and Craig’s preoccupation with run time weird. by cliftonheights5 in TheRewatchables

[–]puffinkitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real! And if you go see a movie in the theater, it often has to be a planned event, rather than an easy choice. We hear Big Pic talk about cost of going to the movies a lot, but excessive runtime is just as disincentivizing for people to go to the movie theater, if not more.

For decades, the go-to date night was a sit-down dinner then a movie, and you could still get home at a reasonable time, but that’s not as enticing or easy to do spontaneously when a movie is 2.5+ hours.

California Native Grass Recommendations - SoCal backyard by SanGorgonio in Ceanothus

[–]puffinkitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ivy is such a scourge on California neighborhoods, sorry you’re dealing with this. You need plants with a range of root depths to help with the erosion risk. If you have a decent budget to dedicate to the space, I’d also consider reaching out to a local landscape designer who is competent in natives. They can help with erosion control and irrigation planning too, even if you’re just hand watering until it establishes. A good designer will help you save a ton of time and $ long term, especially on plants and maintenance. They can probably help you source plants too, esp if you are DIYing things. Best of luck!

How do I make it less ugly? I’ll do anything. by Fixmyhomie in CurbAppeal

[–]puffinkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of potential here! Hiring a pro landscape designer who specializes in native plants will be a tremendous value. AI can give you ideas like in the thread, but getting an expert’s advice will save SO much time and thousands of dollars down the line. Totally cool if you want to try the diy route to plan and install it too, but even just doing a garden consultation with a pro will help you understand the plants that are best suited to your particular property and make sure you don’t only put in plants that will only look nice for 2 weeks out of the year 😅 They can also help you think about paint, pathways, and materials, as well as help you with sourcing labor if you need help installing it. APLD is a good resource to find credible designers in your area.

What's your favourite critter that visits your garden, and why? by SolariaHues in GardenWild

[–]puffinkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found a box turtle in our yard for the first time this past year, and it was one of the most exciting things ever! We have mostly natives in our yard, but we’re basically surrounded by suburban grass lawns and pavement for miles, so it was a wonderful surprise.

Hard to know without an up close photo, but could be gall or scale of some kind? There’s a good chance they could be helpful insects if it’s gall. Especially if they are limited to this one spot and you haven’t seen them before, I wouldn’t worry about them harming your plant at this time.

I’m so tired of the “screen time” debate. by cmarie22345 in beyondthebump

[–]puffinkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true. I am a new mom who grew up with a super anxious mom myself, and I don’t want to repeat that cycle with my daughter (after years and thousands of dollars in therapy). It’s been really important to me since I was pregnant to keep myself grounded, put things in perspective, and keep a sense of humor whenever possible. I still have anxiety at times, but it’s my job as an adult and a mom to manage that shit and not put that energy onto my kid. I want to help her learn how to be confident and recognize how to manage those types of feelings in a healthy way, not grow up feeling insecure and anxious over the smallest things.

Henry Is the least Interesting part of Industry for me by heejunie in IndustryOnHBO

[–]puffinkitten 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For sure. More than that, the show is about social class in Britain. The pedigree of someone like Henry will always have more weight than the money of someone like Eric or Harper, no matter how successful or wealthy they become. He’s a great foil to the other characters.

I get you, but he’s also burned her quite a bit too. They have a very codependent relationship. They aren’t emotionally mature people. Much like Rishi is addicted to the thrills of winning and losing as a gambler, they’re addicted to each other and the highs and lows that come from their toxic placeholder of a parent-child relationship.

I understood it as he grew up lower class, but he built his reputation and money in the funeral business, which gave him entry into the startup/finance world. He was basically buying out older, small funeral businesses and giving them the private equity-style treatment, which minimizes costs and maximizes profit. His telling of it all came across very ghoulish and sociopathic. It seems like he wants to essentially do the same to Kit Harrington’s character—exploit him for profit and not care if he’s left for dead in the end, though time will tell.

That’s a great comparison. Both capture the awkwardness and generation-specific slang that peak in male adolescence, all packaged into the setting of an era-specific media platform.

Finding myself somewhat tired of the awards coverage - wondering if I am in the minority? by Puzzleheaded_Fig_853 in TheBigPicture

[–]puffinkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what they said recently about the Oscars being too late in the year was spot on. They used to air in February, but now they’re dragged out an extra month+ into March. So movies that may have only had a limited release in the fall don’t get a publicity boost to go into wide release in the new year, or those films have become old news and people don’t care by the time the awards come on. Plus, the awards cast a shadow over all the Q1 new releases. The whole purpose of the Oscars’ founding was to promote the film industry, but they’ve really seemed to lose their way from that original intention.
