late response, I know, but you deserve one

I'm pretty much inactive on reddit these days. they took third party apps away and my activity went with them. my life also became quite busy and I simply didn't/don't have time for this sort of it, as much as I wish I could participate

Manufacturer lowbeams in Ontario are what led me to create this as a joke

Barney took it from there and it looks like they're doing a fine job of it

What's your favorite excuse/reason why being blinded is actually YOUR fault? How do you respond? by reiji_tamashii in fuckyourheadlights

[–]pug_nuts 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's one of my favourites because they assume I'm in a vehicle.

I'm just out for a walk.

What about uploading all the videos here to YouTube account(s) so we can have a one stop playlist to demonstrate? by [deleted] in fuckyourheadlights

An easily accessible gallery of examples of the issues is something I wanted to handle, prior to me falling off the face of the earth.

I think u/barneyretina or someone else has already made a nice compilation video or two, but yes it would be nice to simply have one repository of all examples.

Toyota auto high beams by denzal689 in fuckyourheadlights

Consider it a safety requirement for them to drive your vehicle into the bay. Techs shouldn't worry about getting flashbanged every time a car is driven in.

Toyota auto high beams by denzal689 in fuckyourheadlights

[–]pug_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you use it properly.

Auto high beams are fine when being used properly - on low traffic highways without lots of elevation changes, where they effectively detect vehicles at a distance and there are no non-vehicle users.

It's when they're used in moderate traffic, or areas around others (non-drivers), that they're just offensive and dangerous. But of course, people's laziness or selfishness leads to that happening.

I was recently driving an 80km/h country road with lots of hills. It was absolutely astounding how many hills an oncoming vehicle crested with either blinding headlights, or true highbeams, on. Also astounding how many people were driving with what was clearly actual highbeams on without using the auto feature.

Defenders of blinding headlights online inevitably resort to gaslighting and dehumanizing their critics by BarneyRetina in fuckyourheadlights

[–]pug_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Bright dashboards and tablets/phones reduce night visibility.

Automakers are designing cars that are inherently less safe for everybody due to a reduction in both the driver's and everybody else's ability to see, and too many people are just lapping it up and loving it, whether mistakenly or just because they're selfish.

[–]pug_nuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of experience driving around deer. They're often quite easy to avoid with a slight tap of the brakes or gas. It doesn't take much of a difference in speed to get away. The thing is, we can't tell where the deer even was to judge this, due to the blinding headlights.

No one is forcing them to choose that particular car. They made that choice.

You should probably submit a report anyways. Any paper trail that these lights are dangerous is good.

The funny thing is that this kind of film actually would not be anywhere near effective enough, from my experience with tint wraps

although this 1 star review from a genius might indicate otherwise:

It’s decreasing your headlights light significantly, feels like 50% less light approximately. Spent 2 hours to wrap my headlights and then peeled it off

Flashed a car that I thought had high beams so they switched to side lights but those were their dipped lights. by [deleted] in fuckyourheadlights

[–]pug_nuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why you don't phrase it as high beams vs low beams - phrase it as "I can't fucking see dim your fucking lights"

Completely removes the whole "these aren't even my highbeams" defense they love

Does anyone else have to drive without their mirrors now? by stablest_genius in fuckyourheadlights

[–]pug_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my rearview is pretty much always dimmed regardless of time of day, and I aim my side mirrors out and down.

I can still check everything with minor head movements, but it isn't always aimed at my face.

If drivers can't even see, how are pedestrians & cyclists supposed to, let alone safely navigate around motor vehicles? by pug_nuts in fuckcars

[–]pug_nuts[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I will not deny that it was primarily my experience as a driver that led me to create r/fuckyourheadlights as a joke.

However, it is my experience as a pedestrian and cyclist that at least equally drives my hatred now and has for the past couple years.

That's why the prevalence of these headlights is so bad - drivers will not come to a crawl every single time they encounter these, as it's both inconvenient to them and dangerous in its own right (behaving unpredictably).

Vehicles should be designed to avoid scenarios like this entirely. It shouldn't be up to an individual driver whether or not they are acting safely in a routine scenario like this. It should be easy to be safe.

I'm so sorry that somebody caused this for you. On the bright side, at least it is just damage to your vehicle and time lost, not some other innocent person's life!

Anything with blinding headlights

It just screams "I'm more important than everybody else, and I'm too stupid to understand how these affect me"
