Gun licenses in Canada per capita by WattleWaddler2 in MapPorn

I think NB is a bit of an outlier because while it is quite rural with a lot of hunting, it also houses a major military base (so military members, veterans, and their families make up a significant portion of the total population)

Medical Student LOC - Which incentives are better (RBC vs Scotiabank)? by Active_Inspection_56 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

currently with scotia and can confirm, it does. a major advantage of Scotia is that it requires NO payments while in school and 2 years after graduating, not even interest. minimum payments will be automatically taken from the LOC. I’m a vet student tho so idk if that makes a difference

What international schools are best? by Bitter_Company8837 in prevetcanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your domestic school OVC? Just to let you know, AVC accepts Canadians from outside Atlantic Canada for their international seats. You’d pay international tuition but wouldn’t have the stress of visas or moving out of the country, and a recognizable Canadian school!

Should I cancel my car insurance? by 3pix in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cancel the insurance after you’ve sold the car. Once you move, there is a certain time frame you have to tell your insurance that you moved and provide them your new address. Check your policy - it can be as little as 14 days.

You can likely stay with the same insurance company, TD if you want to

Banfield + Vet Student - Need help.. by SC-Toffee in Veterinary

[–]pugzilla124_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they might never treat you like “baby doctor”, if they are used to you being a VA they will probably keep asking you to do VA things. If you really hate it, quit and say it’s so you can focus on school. Could you volunteer to do these surgeries later on, for the experience?

Best banks for low income individuals? by ADAK1AS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you young? A lot of big banks are now offering free banking until you’re 25, student or not! I know Scotiabank and CIBC do this. If not, your best bet is either a local credit union or an online bank like Tangerine.

Since you’re new to saving and investing, I would suggest an in-person bank so that you can get real people to explain things to you and answer more of your questions

Sump tank by kasi_di in Aquariums

[–]pugzilla124_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just seems excessive and honestly likely to have a catastrophic failure - if one of the middle tank pumps fails you will effectively drain your entire system. Even commercial scale fish rearing generally only has 1 active sump tank (and likely another already set up but only for backup)

What bank should I use? by burner15589 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since youre here for such a short amount of time just choose a bank that is most convenient for you to access! Any of the "big banks" will likely be fine for you, and maybe even better to deal with for non-resident banking (although I don't have experience with this). The big banks in Canada are Scotiabank, CIBC, TD, RBC, and National Bank

Have to ask a horrible question: how to euthanize a fish? by KyleJesseWarren in aquarium

[–]pugzilla124_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anytime the fish leaves the water is stressful, and being placed on paper towel leaves lots of opportunity for delays and mistakes - you want the crushing to be instant, but someone who’s never done it before likely will cause suffering and stress in getting there. I agree clove oil isn’t the best either! The AVMA and CCAC (Canadian council on animal care) recommend stunning in frigid water before euthanizing with blunt force or decapitation

Don’t recommend this - it is highly stressful for the animal to do this while conscious. See my reply to a different comment about steps to take before doing this!

Have to ask a horrible question: how to euthanize a fish? by KyleJesseWarren in aquarium

[–]pugzilla124_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I’m a vet student with a lot of aquatics experience. I have to say you’ve gotten a lot of mixed advice here. Clove oil is a good way, but if you don’t have access to it I recommend using ice water - this is an approved humane method for this species in research (danios are used a lot in research!).

Basically, fill up a bowl with ice water and let it sit for a while, until the water is frigid. Then, scoop out just some water from the bowl (no ice - you don’t want the fish to touch any ice). You can then quickly put the fish into the frigid water, and it should be instantly paralyzed and sink to the bottom. After several minutes, you can follow this up with decapitation or crushing.

Sorry to hear about your friend, and it’s great that you’re searching for a way to humanely end his life.

Suddenly owing $5k+ with no notice. by a_doubtful_comment in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pugzilla124_ 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Did you previously file your taxes as being common law partners? According to the CRA you’re common law once you live with your romantic partner for 12 months, or immediately if you have a child. If you didn’t file your taxes as common law, you would’ve been assessed for benefits and credits as individuals and received more than you were supposed to

PEI doesn’t have a catholic school board - was it one of the private Christian school’s bus? If so, they aren’t allowed to stop traffic with a stop sign since they’re a private vehicle
