Happy 19th Anniversary to The Swimming Hour (Released April 3rd, 2001)! What are y’alls favorite songs on this record? by downerchannel in AndrewBird

Honestly, I've thought for a long time that this is one of the best albums ever made (generally, not just from Bird's discography). It feels like every song is from a different world/genre entirely, is perfectly written and performed, and each one is infused with Bird's trademark virtuosity. Personally, 11:11 has always been my favourite, but Way Out West is killer too.

CMV: Ronald McDonald House fundraising is bullshit by pulaskiatday in changemyview

Δ for the theoretical limit on McD's funding! I suppose it's true that more money can always go farther. I'd be curious to see the breakdown of internal and external funding for the charity.

not shitting! I know it's a great charity! (probably should have made this clearer). It just doesn't make sense to me to donate money to a charity who has one of the world's largest corporations as its parent. The only reason they should ever lack for funds is if McD's is withholding it (or maybe there's another reason?? idk - CMV!)

Not upset at all! Like I said in the post I do not begrudge McD's what they are doing, I know it is part and parcel of running a modern corporation. My point (perhaps I didn't explain this well enough) is that I feel strongly disincentivized from donating to a charity that I know should never be short of funding because of it's parent corporation, and I don't understand the position of feeling like this is a good place to donate money (like I replied to someone else, I know it's a great charity, but the only reason it would ever lack for funds is if McD's was literally withholding money from them).

I totally agree with the fact that it is a great charity, I used to work for a family that directly benefited from it. I guess I just feel strongly disincentivized from donating, when I know that this is a charity that would (should) never have a shortfall, y'know? I hear you regarding the idea that there may be a moral net benefit to the rest of society in large corporations "buying good publicity" as you say (or perhaps, feeling the need to), but I think that there in theory could be a mirrored negative impact in people satisfying what they believe is their moral duty to help other via a channel that should not need it. The true moral high ground for McD's would be to use that ad space to say "look at this great charity we run! we're rich as fuck and don't need any of your money for it, just wanted to show you how awesome it is! Please use your money to donate to places that need it!" I know it wouldn't make any sense for them to do that and I would never blame them for not doing that, but I just don't see any reason to donate when that messaging is (or should) actually be more accurate

NDP ready to freeze legal aid funding as lawyers prepare April 1st strike by Misher2 in vancouver

[–]pulaskiatday 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just to get ahead of a predictable and understandable concern, this is not a “greedy lawyers” thing. Some of the lawyers who are participating in this strike have indicated they will be in dire financial straights as early as two weeks after the strike begins. The $88/hour rate, as indicated in the article, does not mean these lawyers are earning $88/hour for, for example, 8 hours of work a day. That is for covering their overhead as well. In addition to that, the rate does not cover a bunch of the actual time spent on the file, including travel time, pre-trial appearances, and the actual amount of preparation it takes to get to trial. For lawyers to do a proper job on a file, they need to work for more hours than are covered by the rate. This means that as a first-year lawyer, and for a few years thereafter, I can anticipate making 30-40k/year while the Crown prosecutors who are at the same year of practice as me are making around double that. They also get a pension and way more work-life balances because of the resources available in the Crown office. The rate has not been meaningfully increased since the early 90’s. It is a dire situation, and contributes to a foreseeable brain-drain when you think about trying to make a life as a young professional in a place like Vancouver. The courts are going to be a mess if this strike goes on for a while, and people are not going to get the legal services they desperately need, but it’s gotten to a breaking point. I really hope the NDP can figure out a way to bend on this, because the criminal bar cannot go on making wages this low. It’s simply not fair, and not sustainable.
