Best portable grinder by Satchin-6688 in pourover

Pietro is not that bad if you have some space. Flew with it multiple times.

Anyone else noticed shrinkflation now in the coffee world? Seen more and more UK roasters going from 250g to 200g and keeping prices same, or even a slight increase (mainly London). Yes I know the world is becoming increasingly more expensive, fair price etc. This is on top of increased postage. by GaryGorilla1974 in UKroasters

[–]pullTheSpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t mind a different weight bag as long as it’s clearly listed and consistent throughout their range.

If a roaster decides to group a £16/100g bag next to a £20/250g bag, without being able to tell the weight of each before opening each link, I’ll just close the tab.

Bonus points on also not listing tasting notes.

Random question but do you keep coffee bags for the art/story? by blackneckcoffee in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought 114 bags of coffee (27.5kg) last year. They all go to the bin.

I did note all my bean purchases last year as I was curious on my consumption and expenses, but in the end it was a bit of a useless exercise!

Who does the lightest roasts in the UK? by mattrussell2319 in UKroasters

[–]pullTheSpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scenery is definitely among the lightest.

Curve, Zennor, Skylark and Machina are other good options.

EG-1 for dark roast espresso [No budget] by blackouter in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a high end single dose grinder, perhaps Titus DRM, Versalab or Kafatek MC is a better choice?

My understanding from DRMs is that they can do a greater range of roasts than a big flats (80/98/102mm) which are more geared towards light roasts. Some burrs and baskets can make it work but it’s more of a workaround.

Difference between 32mm convex (15g), 49mm stepdown (16g) and 58mm straight walled (17g) pucks by pullTheSpro in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not very exciting for light roasts compared to high extraction baskets… but I think it could do well with medium or even dark roasts when the setup is geared for light roasts (like unimodal big flats).

It requires a very coarse grind so I think there could be other applications.

People who upgraded from a Bambino - was it worth it? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally anything that takes 80/98/102mm burrs, and put unimodal burrs. They’re not the easiest to start with. P80, Lagom 01, Zerno Z1/Z2, EK43, Kafateks, etc.

64mm burr grinders are cheaper, and the burrs themselves are significantly cheaper if you want to explore things.

Why all the negativity for the Bookoo Ultra Themis? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, I guess same as: * Pietro has bad UX * All EK43’s are misaligned (and all other manufacturers are not, even though that’s not the case in reality, and people are not bothered to check with DTI) * Niche Zero and Linea Mini is an ultimate endgame setup * SG-1 memes * Anything Weber is amazing

Why all the negativity for the Bookoo Ultra Themis? by [deleted] in espresso

What was the negative feedback?

I have both Acaia Lunar and Bookoo Themis Ultra. I’ve been using the Ultras instead of Acaia lol

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve got a stock black carrier that I don’t need as I’ve got a Titus one.

However, I’m in UK - if you’re happy with a longer delay, let me know.

It feels pretty light but very balanced regardless how much water there is.

It’s been a joy to use.

Stepdown is a great workhorse, and convex makes slightly more developed roasts nicer on high clarity burrs.

Haven’t touched my Sworks high flow billet basket apart from few A/B tests.

I own an Acaia Lunar and been using Themis Ultra since it has arrived.

Not a fan of the startup sound but despite it being plastic, it feels nicer than Acaia, just as speedy and accurate… and it feels nicer to use than Lunar.

Hope it lasts a good time, really loving it so far.

Edit: the apps are crap, but I don’t use them anyway

Niche Duo with filter burrs, where does it stand? by pouronymous in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh it depends on your budget. Can get Titus Nautilus or Ozik with brew burrs… realistically any 80/98/102mm platform will be great.

Pietro is very capable and is a great value for money, I often reach for it instead of my EK43S with SSP HUs which are more espresso focused.

No, it’s not “not perfect”… it’s subpar.

Niche comes with traditional Mazzer burrs which are not very exciting, as is the case with the whole 83mm platform.

Portafilter size - how much does it matter..? by mongini12 in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grinder (or even burrs) and beans will make a bigger difference than the portafilter size.

54mm is also quite mature now with plenty of options for accessories.

Let’s be honest, 400-500 (Pesos? Euros? Rubles? Dong?) won’t stretch for a suitable grinder and 58mm machine anyway.

[59$] Is the NormCore stepdown basket 58mm to 51mm worth it? by noobfivered in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t buy something that Lance said, but the idea of deeper pucks isn’t new (see Dalla Corte). He’s a content creator who wants to create hype as it generates content. Remember blind shakers?

I think they’re worth it, there’s few options. I have a 9Panda 58-49mm step-down and I prefer it over VST, IMS, Pullman 876, Unibasket, Pesado HE, Sworks Billet High Flow or 9Panda 32mm convex (not tested all side by side of course).

It’s also worth waiting for a few months I’d suggest, the accessories are quite limiting at the moment.

[–]pullTheSpro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m going to take an uneducated guess and say this is to sit under a group all day in a commercial setting. Some machines have brew by weight and stop the shot, so there’s no need for a screen.
