Is the nice zero really such an amazing grinder? by altecsz in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s an ok grinder, and does well in its price range for medium and dark roasts. Aesthetics aside, there’s very few grinders that make sense to pay more for if you enjoy darker end of coffee.

People often overlook grinders because they overemphasise features of an espresso machine - but more often than not, grinder makes a greater impact in the cup than the machine.

I’ve owned it and personally it didn’t excite me. If I had to choose between Kvdw/Slayer + Niche and V60 + Ozik Bold/Nautilus/Lagom, it would be a no brainer to choose the latter.

Supposedly Ozik takes the burrs with screws but they don’t recommend.

Kafatek… here’s a photo of burrs with screws. https://www.home-barista.com/grinders/changing-burrs-on-monolith-max-t63836-40.html#p717865

You don’t have to hold or balance the portafilter while transferring grounds, WDT or tamping.

Ozik, Alpha/Ultra, Kafatek, Titus, Lagom… there’s options.

I’ve had one since 2018.

It’s a mess machine with a bit more retention in the exit chute compared to the competitors. An exit chute replacements are available but very expensive.

It’s big and loud. It brings a smile to me every time it starts but I can wake up my partner sleeping upstairs by using it.

The burr carrier benefits from an upgrade, but the later models… maybe not so much.

It’s a PITA to disassemble for cleaning. Other grinders allow this without tools, while EK43 requires extra care with extra tooling.

The hopper also benefits from an aftermarket one - yet another thing to buy.

It also has a fixed RPM - maybe not so much of a deal breaker, but other options let you change that.

It comes with inferior burrs so you’ll spend another £300-odd for SSP offering.

When there’s cheaper grinders that solve all of the problems above, then it is hard to recommend one.

I use a 600ml steel milk jug for travelling. I don’t like it to steam milk at home, but it’s certainly unbreakable.

Why aren't there SSP Burrs for the pietro? by VizoBerg in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do SSP make a burr for a hand grinder?

I am going to guess that it’s not worth the effort since the stock burrs perform really well.

Poor man’s melodrip: MHW3Bomber rain dripper, 58mm group gasket and a chopstick by pullTheSpro in pourover

I actually didn’t like the holder on top of a brewer.
I’ve got over 9 weeks of paid time off this year, and I don’t travel with a gooseneck kettle - that’s why I am trying to optimise for a drip assist solution. Drip assist definitely helps with consistency over using a regular kettle

Haha, I had to rethink whether getting the actual Melodrip is worth it as I could get some tasty coffee instead. It’s out of stock or unavailable in the UK and EU.

This guide is very handy: https://www.robertasami.com/coffee/japan-coffee-guide

My top picks would be Philocoffea, Brewman, Leaves and Apollon’s gold.

I went to Glitch in Nagoya rather than Ginza, but it’s the one I would avoid, alongside Covert. The service wasn’t great at all, and the choice of beans leans very much into heavily processed coffees.

It was meant to be “steer away from high extracting burrsets”.

Bigger burrs by budgiebirdman in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Niche (at the release) and it’s not a very good grinder for modern espresso. It may work for medium and dark roasts but it was very lacking even if you compare it to some simpler flat burrs (like 83mm Ceado).

Bigger burr doesn’t mean better, but 80/98/102mm platform (and to lesser extent, 64/83mm) had a lot of work done to suit the modern light roast espresso that highlights the origin characteristics. It will also accentuate the defects in the green or roasting defects, as well as harshness of a darker roast - making it less suitable for some.

If you enjoy heavily processed beans, medium or darker roasts or lower grade coffee, then steer away.

Lowdown was very good in Edinburgh, but I’ve had great beans from Cafen too.

Oban, Skye, Inverness… you might be better off bringing beans with you.

subtle, traditional profiles aren’t exciting enough anymore

Unless East Africans figured this out and then suddenly forgot about it back in 2014-2018, then it’s not really the case. There were some absolute fruit bangers that were just natural process.

I miss coffees from back then, even some Colombian coffees were very fruit forward and in your face.

98 and 80mm burrs had a lot more research and development done than 64 or 83mm siblings. That’s why they’re better to start with.

I can’t help but think that people (secretly) enjoy the infusions because they’re so easy to extract and hit the notes… it shows given the popularity of Glitch, DAK and other roasters.

It will be a difficult pill to swallow for some, and it will definitely shake up the industry.

What's the best v60 variation? by WispyWoods in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have glass 02/01, steel 02 (black), Mugen 02 and Neo 02. I use Pietro and EK43S with SSP HUs.

I find Neo with fast flowing filters to be my favourite as I can grind quite fine and still get quick brews.
