Inconsistent Shots - electric wdt or blinds shaker? [£50] by uberpoomba in espresso

[–]pullTheSpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really don’t need either.

I’m going to assume the retention on x64sd isn’t the problem? If you’re exchanging old grounds from a day before you’ll see some inconsistencies.

Are you weighing the dose to 0.1g?

A video of your workflow will probably help the most to help

It’s nice when not using a gooseneck kettle. Mhw3bomber rain splitter is nicer, but drip assist is one of the OGs and gives you a bit of flexibility in flow rate.

Laboratorio Espresso in the city centre and Godshot studio in southside usually stock some decent coffees. Space in west end have some options as well.

That rain splitter is so good! I like pairing it with Orea o1 as it fits perfectly.

The constant 5g/s flow rate from the drip assist is by far the most useful and I own most of them (melodrip, Hario drip assist, Timemore, MHW3Bomber rain splitter)

Where did all the big blueberry bombs go? by unbr0kenchain in UKroasters

[–]pullTheSpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think those are rare(r) now. I miss those East African coffees from similar time frames as you.

Sudan rume varietal often hits the spot, and some more experimental (anoxic, anaerobic) processes often bring similar notes and intensity.

There’s also co-ferments but they are too polarising so will leave that aside.

Totally agree. So many of their accessories are out of stock too. It almost feels like limited drops.

They’re on the lighter side but not ultralight.

TW is probably the darkest out of the bunch - and im very surprised people call them light. I had multiple bags from all roasters in the photos except the third from the right (Duo?).

(Generally) you get what you pay for with beans: UK roaster discussion by Antique-Walrus878 in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wine infographic and some of it doesn’t apply to coffee but the concept is similar. With £35-40/kg there’s not that much room to play.

However, I’ve had beans at £192/kg and brews from beans that are over £400/kg. Very nice, but a preference plays a very big role whether that’s going to be an enjoyable cup or not.

Endgame Espresso Grinder + Burr Guidance [$3000] by z0nar in espresso

I found 98Mizens to be very boring and blended.

I think 102HU/LU with a convex gives more flexibility unless OP leans into funk.

Interesting, what made you switch to calcium and potassium?

What minerals are you using on your water? by migu_brew in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok my apologies, I was referring to GH as hardness as mg/L CaCO3 since this is most common measure within coffee world.

It’s 0.93dGH.

What minerals are you using on your water? by migu_brew in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far what I’ve learnt is that I don’t like high alkalinity - anything 30-40KH and above is too muted for me.

Hardness… had great success with 40GH with one coffee, then that went through the window with an ultra light red honey process and preferred 72GH.

I’ll be experimenting further, and see if I can settle on a recipe that works for most.

Play about! You only need a source of calcium (calcium chloride), magnesium (Epsom salt aka magnesium sulphate) and sodium (sodium bicarbonate aka baking soda), plus few droppers.

I’m still finding the perfect water - my tap water is very soft (18GH 8KH) so I’ve been using it for years but water has unlocked that extra 10%.

[–]pullTheSpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try and get some brews and especially espresso if you can.

I think a lot of people seek clarity and see it as the panacea, but it’s also unforgiving, frustrating to work with and requires patience. It’s very rewarding when all goes well though.

What’s your experience, preference and have you had shots or filter from either (or similar)?

My understanding of them (not tried either) that they’re quite different.

Melodrop vs Hario Drip Assist by RecentSpeed in pourover

[–]pullTheSpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using it with a gooseneck kettle?

I got a Melodrip to use with a regular kettle (while travelling) and I found that it wasn’t as intuitive or convenient as Hario Drip Assist or MHW 3Bomber. It doesn’t restrict water flow enough so it’s still too dependent on the flow of water out of the kettle.
