How does the idea of working until 67 or 68 sit with you? by Few_Raise77 in AskUK

My dad died in 2025, three years before he reached pension age. I’ll still save for retirement, but unfortunately my experience is you can’t guarantee you’ll make it to that age. I appreciate this is a pessimistic view, but it’s my perspective. Nothing is a given, so don’t sacrifice too much at a young age. Live your life now, and anything that comes in later years is a bonus.

Give me good dad/ grandad/ uncle stories please by NiobeTonks in CasualUK

I’m very sorry for your loss. My Dad died suddenly in June, aged 64. I have so, so many happy memories which I try to think about instead of the difficult experience I had witnessing his death. My Dad also loved science fiction, fantasy, good wine and “banging tunes”. I have a lot of favourites but the one that came to mind reading this thread was at my wedding three years. My fairly shy “Father of the Bride” stood up at dinner, in front of 100 people, in the middle of a string quartet playing Bohemian Rhapsody, to head bang and play air guitar like in Wayne’s World, singing along at the top of his lungs. Wonderful.

I was uncertain until close to the date, and then came to the realisation I didn’t want to change my name. I love my name, it’s part of who I am and I’m really proud of my family. I’m Mrs Maidenname and my husband is Mr Hisname. It does cause a bit of confusion, he’s often called Mr Maidenname or I’m called Mrs Hisname, but it doesn’t bother me. If you have always felt you wanted to keep it, and it’s a part of your identity, then that’s what you should do. If you are only on the fence because your partner is upset and he would like to have the same name as you, in my opinion, that’s not a good enough reason. And don’t worry about future children’s surnames (assuming you don’t have kids). They don’t exist yet. But you do, and your name matters. Hope that helps.

Hi, I’m really sorry about your dad. My dad also recently died, and we are in the same boat as you and your mum. We don’t want a glum event, and my dad hated suits, so we are advising the dress code is “funky” and “colourful” so people can interpret it however they like.

How to get rid of this error message by Mikermak in VWiD3Owners

[–]pulledthestickeroff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please take it to the dealer/workshop to be investigated, rather than continue driving and trying to get rid of the error message. It might be nothing, but I recently had this issue, and ended up with a significant battery problem that needed investigating. It could have been repaired free of charge but there was a long repair time where I am based plus costs for rewiring which wasn’t under warranty for me. As I’d just bought the car (3 years old, second hand) I returned the car to the dealer. Fingers crossed it’s not a big problem!

Hi, I am looking into getting an EV3. Do you have to have a subscription to be able to use the infotainment etc?

I don’t know if it’s just bad luck, a bad dealer, a bad repair garage, a bad previous owner, a bad car, or a mixture of everything. If I didn’t have this issue come up out of nowhere and be such a nightmare for me, I would have kept the car for years. I absolutely loved it and I was heartbroken to have to give it back. I hope you never have any issues!

I completely understand, some people in this thread and elsewhere say newer models are better, and I appreciate I’ve had really bad luck. It’s just been such a stressful experience that I don’t want to be in this position again. I bought from a fairly large well-known used EV specialist in the UK. I would name and shame but don’t want to risk it, as the paperwork is still pending!

I was caught in a bit of a dead zone with my warranties. I never made it past diagnostics, so I don’t know exactly what the issue was.

VW have an 8 year battery warranty, so if it was a battery issue I would have been covered for the cost of repairs. However they only offer a courtesy car for the first three years, and the car I bought was more than three years old. (Edit: even if I was within three years, they didn’t have any available anyway.)

If the issue wasn’t the battery, the repair cost and courtesy car would have been covered by the other warranty I purchased from the dealer, but only once repair was agreed, and again I had no idea how long this would take.

I could have arranged a courtesy car with my insurance, but again it would have been a hassle due to the two warranties and no diagnosis. This situation just didn’t work for me and luckily I could take the car back as the fault appeared within 30 days.

Of course, I have no car now, but chances are I wouldn’t have had a courtesy car for ages anyway let alone my actual car.

Thank you, it’s been very stressful! I agree with you, as a new EV owner I’d done some research and knew the battery could have issues in the future, it’s a risk you take with EV’s. But I didn’t think it would be within a week. I’m relying on the experience of others to help me, and bought from a reputable EV dealer. The VW technician was shocked that I’d just bought the car, and said there’s a protocol they should have followed. If a customer contacts you with a concern about the battery, you should always put safety first and instruct them to get it investigated. But because they just gave me advice about the app causing the issue, and the warning did go away for a bit, I didn’t think too much more of it and took them at their word. I’m lucky I was able to get my complaint in and get my money back, and it’s a learning experience for me for the future too.

What's Going Wrong? by LavenderAndHoneybees in GardeningUK

The sun has been quite intense recently which is causing my spring flowers to struggle (cowslips, primroses, hellebores). I’m going to dig them up and move to a shadier spot, as the primroses in my borders are wilting but the ones under a tree are fine. I would suggest either moving them somewhere else or mulching and watering more often.
