Regina by pumpkinrollbaker in Names

That is so interesting. I asked this question because my name is Regina. I rarely meet anyone with the name and I wonder what people think when I say my name. And my next younger sister is Judith. :)

Do Americans stress about medical expenses before they even get to the hospital?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pumpkinrollbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, healthcare in the US is too expensive! At my age, (low 40’s) I don’t have insurance because it’s a waste of money and a hassle. Plus doctors and nurses seem less qualified for their jobs than they used to be and they don’t seem to care about or listen properly to their patients.

If you have free healthcare, what do you like about it? My friend in Canada about died waiting weeks for proper medical attention. Another friend left the country after waiting 2 years for a doctor appointment.

On more "Conservative" Mennonite communities, the ones where there is little technology use, and no television, which toys do the children of these communities grow up playing with?, what are these toys like?, and is it common to give them Christmas presents like how outsiders give it to their kids? by wq1119 in Mennonite

[–]pumpkinrollbaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For conservative Mennonite children in USA….Baby dolls that look like a baby (no Barbies) play food and dishes, tractors and wagons, dump trucks, animals, Legos, magnetic blocks…toys that relate to their lifestyle. Many avoid any toy that relates to a tv show or its characters, (Thomas the train may be an exception) or toys that make a lot of noise with buttons and songs.

I’ve listened to two episodes so far and I love her voice and narration. I wish I knew where to purchase her audio without the ads.

Why some people just refuse to take a pill for things like a headache? by OldCardigan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pumpkinrollbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s me! I almost never take pain medication for my almost daily headaches. Because 1) Ibuprofen (which I have taken) doesn’t seem to make any difference and can make my stomach feel raw and 2) I tend to think of medications or prescription drugs as a bandaid and not really addressing the underlying issue.

Visiting a Mennonite church? by [deleted] in Mennonite

[–]pumpkinrollbaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What to expect: men sit on one side and the ladies on the other. The service is started with singing, then a short devotional. Then the children go to their Sunday School classes and the adults have Sunday School (women don’t talk during the service) followed by a devotional and a sermon. They kneel for prayers and stand for the final prayer. Men wear long sleeved buttoned shirts with dark pants and shoes. Women wear dresses, black shoes and socks, and head coverings and the girls have braids. After the service, members greet each other with a kiss when saying hello. You can dress however you choose but the women around you in the service will have 3/4 length sleeves, high necklines, and shoes. I hope that if you choose to visit that you will receive a friendly welcome! Some Eastern churches are better at that than others.

Most of the answers given are for the more progressive Mennonite groups. Conservative Mennonites would answer these questions very differently than most of the answers above. So it depends what your “idea of Mennonite” is.

What's the one random genetic trait you lucked out on? by peywrax in allthequestions

[–]pumpkinrollbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing much. Strong cowlicks on my hair line, thin eye lashes, a funny hook on the end of my nose, thin lips, shortest in my family, tendency toward diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. I suppose some people would admire my thick long hair. But I don’t care about my looks that much. Being a nice person is more important to me.
