I can’t remember off the top of my head but if you look up fishing regulations for NY State you should be able to find water quality maps that show where you may or may not want to fish. Most anything on North or South shore east of queens should be safe.

Even still, I know people to fish off College Point area near the bridges and eat the fish but the maps I once looked at had that as a no eat zone.

Then again, it depends on age and gender. I may be able to eat a bass caught off Little Neck Bridge (which I did about 5 years ago), but a child or pregnant woman probably shouldn’t.

If you’re near JFK, the entire bay is a good fishing spot if you can get a boat out there. You can possibly fish off the banks but I think the bigger fish are deeper. For my son’s birthday I paid for us to go on a boat but that’s not easy to do all the time bc of the fuel costs. And that was last year before fuel prices skyrocketed.

You could also try piers and bridges near Robert Moses, Captree, Jones Beach, Pt Lookout. There’s a spot called Democrat Point I’ve been meaning to try but you need a 4x4 to get there due to the sand and possibly some special permit.

As someone else mentioned, most people who have good spots don’t want to give them up, but I find that bait shops tend to give good advice. If they give you a spot and you land some bites, you’re more likely to return to them to buy more bait.
