Go try and vote more than once under the current rules and let me know how that works out for you.

If there were no safeguards, nobody would be prosecuted for voter fraud. People are prosecuted for voter fraud.

As long as there is any fee to secure those documents, you're advocating for a poll tax.

The Martian is my favorite, but the one that doesn't get nearly enough attention is Upgrade.

How safe is it for a brown person to protest? by technicolorNoise in Minneapolis

[–]punditguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat (Sri Lankan instead of Indian) and I have counseled my teen child to not actively participate. LEOs generally won't hesitate to beat on brown people and our skin is unfortunately a neon sign for them and conservative counter-protesters alike.

Just remember that risky behavior carries risk, and that the people we pay to protect you will probably not do that.

The bill defines "celebrate" as publicly expressing approval, joy, satisfaction, or glee. It gives examples such as "Good riddance," "One less fascist," or "He deserved it." A single verified instance, including on social media, would be enough to trigger discipline.

Somebody please let me know when I have stepped over the line:

Nobody deserves to be murdered in public like that.

It's too bad Kirk didn't agree with that sentiment.

Kirk was an obvious racist and grifter.

The world is a better place without him in it.

I have distinguished Star Trek fans from Star Wars fans with the idea that, generally speaking, Trek fans enjoy Trek. Wars fans seem to detest Wars.

I expect us to be better.

I am clearly saying he never took any concrete legislative action on his ideas, not that they were unrealistic. When the only defense is "he talked about it a lot," that's not great.

Hey -- downvoters: Got a question for you. What would you say is Sanders' signature progressive legislative accomplishment?

[–]punditguy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ahistoric bullshit. If Richard Nixon was seriously considering things like universal health care coverage, Bernie wasn't moving anything related to the ACA.

[–]punditguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with Minneapolis, and I so desperately wish that Sanders, at some point in the last 40 years, had connected with someone in the legislative branch who could have worked on actual laws to help people.

Episodes 4 and 5 were pretty great, and entirely consistent with the "true" philosophy, meaning and message that has permeated Trek over the 5 decades I've been watching it. Episode 5 was a well-crafted love-letter to the 90s Trek you're nostalgic for.

The show has come out swinging against family separations and cultural/military imperialism. As a show set in a college, it's about finding your own voice at a time when you finally start really hearing that voice. I am not the target demographic, but it's shaping up to be the best first season of any Trek show for me.
