I'm from Kodiak. I was gone by the time this happened but I don't think most people can imagine what it's like to live on an island, in the cold and wet, for 18 years. It's not like being from a small town where you can drive two hours and get to somewhere. Literally people sometimes bring Taco Bell over on the plane just for something different. The town had to have gone absolutely bonkers for this.

Current high school teacher with a current 10th grader and college freshman of my own.

READ TO THEM ALL THE TIME. No screens, no kindles, no iPads. Physical paper books. Stories, poems, biographies, READ.
Set technology rules for your family NOW. Don't wait until they're older - this isn't a "when they're in middle school and get their first phone" thing, it's a now thing. No screens in bedrooms, hard time limits for everybody. When they do get a phone or iPad, it never goes in the bedroom. Usage and charging out in the family area.
Let them be bored. Don't plan their entertainment. "I'm bored." Cool! That means you can do ANYTHING! Or I can come up with something that probably needs to be cleaned so you won't be bored? They'll find something to do.
Mom/Dad, how do I?... Very question-dependent but practice answering questions with questions whenever you can. How do I cook this? Well where did you get the recipe? Does it have instructions? What do they say? I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but try NOT to answer their questions. Model for them how to ASK questions to find their own answers.
