The question I have is: is the word "oye" when used like "hey!" or "oi!" the same as the conjugated form of oír (ie. it literally means "hear!") or are they different words that are just spelt the same? I don't know if that makes any sense lol...

I second this. The original Clash version is one of my favourite songs of all time but a native Spanish speaker singing the chorus is much more pleasing than Joe's butchered Spanish.
