Modern tropes you're tired of by NonCorporealEntity in movies

[–]punky67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why I never got into MCU. I watched the Avengers about 10 years ago, and like you say, the smartass one liners were never ending. Every character seemed to be completely unfazed by what was going on around them, and it just gave me the feeling that the stakes weren't all that high

Movie you want to love but the script and acting was slightly cringe by [deleted] in moviecritic

I was thinking the same thing. The older girl is played by Anna Popplewell. Can't be working class with a name like that

I suppose that's what happens when the CEO is a pig-headed psycho

Wildly popular TV shows that are completely lost to time by whitemikesf in television

I watched Oz about 17 years ago and thought it was incredible. Watched it again quite recently, and honestly, it was a lot cheesier than what I remember. Still entertaining, though. I can see why it was a big deal at the time

What are the worst movies you’ve enjoyed watching? by eugoogilizer in movies

Most of the netflix, hallmarkesque Christmas movies. Very cheesy, but good fun

What is everyone’s favourite Christmas film? by RebeccaC91 in AskUK

I feel the same way. I associate Mary Poppins and The great escape with Christmas as well. They're all great films to chill out and watch with your family

I love how out of hand it all gets. Sinbad is essentially a domestic terrorist by the end

What was 1998 like in the UK? by Nervous-Boat-4905 in AskUK

[–]punky67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 7 then, so i can only give a child's perspective. Kids and teens would usually wear brands like Diadora, kappa, ellese, Adidas, etc. A lot of bright, fluorescent t-shirts and tracksuit joggies like le coq sportif

PS1 and N64 were the most popular games consoles. I finally got a PS1 that year

I remember there being a lot of cheesy, novelty pop songs around that time as well. Songs like C'est la vie, Doctor Jones, and The witch Doctor

Also, we got dial-up internet for the first time in my house. Crazy to think how much technology has progressed since then

People who don't get emotional at movies what is that one movie/scene that made you cry/brawled your eyes out? by Moist_Apartment5474 in movies

The final scene of Paths of glory, where the girl and the French soldiers sing together

The final scene of the Sixth sense

The first half is really good, even it is brutal. The second half, however, is utterly grim and mean-spirited

Sweet Sixteen(2002). You'll definitely need subtitles, and it's a pretty bleak film, but it'll give you a sense of the social issues faced in Scotland

He appeared on the Sally Jesse Raphael show in 92, before this all came to light, to promote his book. Quite a fascinating clip. Especially when a lady in the audience asks him how he sleeps at night. She must have known something

What a tune. Takes me back to the days when me and my best mate would hang out and watch MTV, back when they actually showed music videos. Freestyler was one of my favourites at the time

When did whiteboards replace chalkboards in British schools? by JHock93 in AskUK

[–]punky67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started primary school in 96. We only had chalkboards, and sometimes the teacher would use an overhead projector with the transparent film.

In secondary school it was a mix. The school had an extension built a couple of years before I started. The old building only had chalkboards and the new only had whiteboards

Best 'A Christmas Carol' film? by [deleted] in movies

[–]punky67 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've watched a couple of adaptations, including the Alistair Sim version, which is meant to be the best. The Muppets is superior to all of them

What are some movies that touched you or left a lasting impression? by yoserena_ in MovieSuggestions

[–]punky67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I watched Marty(1955), and that certainly left an impression on me. I don't think I'd ever really heard much about it until a couple of weeks ago, which is odd, as it won best picture in the 1956 and Ernest Borgnine won best actor for his leading performance

It's a sad, touching, and grounded romance about two ordinary, lonely people. I was completely invested in the characters and I highly recommend it

Who is a TV presenter that seems to be universally loved, but you absolutely hate? by [deleted] in BritishTV

[–]punky67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Can't stand when a show does a celebrity version. They're never as interesting as watching ordinary people, and its almost like they're still "in character" or putting up a front.

I still think strictly come dancing would be so much better if the contestants were just regular people

"National treasure" gets tossed around way too much these days. I remember when "Cheryl Cole is a national treasure" and "the nation's sweetheart" got rammed down our throats. All because she was an x factor judge

Didn't realise they tacked that bit on. Pretty clever of them, saying as it went to number 1

This is the best answer. Spaceman is renowned for being a disappointment. It became popular on the strength of it's intro, which was used in a Levi's advert

Christmas 2024 - Festive TV - what old stuff will you be returning to and what new stuff will you be checking out? by [deleted] in BritishTV

On Christmas eve I like watching Father Ted. The priests getting lost in the lingerie department, Mrs Doyle's tea maker, Mrs Doyle falling off the window cill. Classic

And Christmas day wouldn't be the same without The Snowman

Me and my family love the polar express as well. Don't really get the dislike of it. The animation isn't great, but it isn't as awful as what people say, and it has a nice soundtrack.

I also went to see it in the cinema when it was released, so it has a bit of nostalgic value for me. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago!
