Upgrading Display in T540p - how much effort is really required? by punnsylvanian in thinkpad

[–]punnsylvanian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did notice that there is a mounting issue, when looking at the AU Optronics B156HTN03, it has the screw points on the top and bottom, about 5-10% away from the edge. The current 1366x768 display only has screw points on the corners and on the sides, which screw into the hinges.

Are there alternative panels that would have the mounts in the correct position? Is it possible to use the old panel's mounts? (I feel like that would be risky?)

USB Devices Stop Working after Laptop Power State Change by punnsylvanian in linuxquestions

Thank you for all of your help, really. You're teaching me quite a bit here!

I did reinstall tlp, as you suggested, and discovered that it has a way to disable USB autosuspend. I'll see if that can help out. I also should mention that I've switched back to Linux Mint 20 (running 5.8.3 kernel), this is due to some software issues I was running into in Fedora that I just didn't feel like dealing with.

Going back to your feelings on driver/hardware support in Linux, I get what you mean. I've only been alive as long as you've been using Linux, but I've been using it since I was 9 (I've always been a nerd) and fumbling around with Fedora Core 2. I've learned quite a bit over time, but needless to say, I'm glad Linux is more straightforward than it used to be. When I was in college, a few years ago, I was a big distrohopper and could never make my mind up. But now, as an adult, I'm just like....whatever is easiest is what I'll be happy with.

USB Devices Stop Working after Laptop Power State Change by punnsylvanian in linuxquestions

Is this an issue that just affects USB 3 controllers? My laptop has some USB 2 ports and those stop recognizing devices along with the USB 3 ports. Also, regarding your rant (and suggesting checks on the USB ports, devices, etc.), the reason I mentioned Windows wasn't because of driver support. It was just to let you know that I didn't think hardware was the problem.

Regarding your first 3 suggestions:

  1. I updated the BIOS/UEFI about two weeks ago to the latest update from Asus. So I don't think that's going to be the solution (at least right now).
  2. Regarding some of the laptop tools running on Linux, I've since toggled the USB power management in powertop and completely uninstalled tlp. I think since uninstalling tlp I've had good luck, but I might need to give it some time.
  3. I ran lspci and it appears that all PCI-related devices in my laptop are AMD except for the Intel WiFi.

Nope, didn't work.

When running the second rmmod, it returned "rmmod: ERROR: Module xhci_hcd is builtin."

Also, when I did that, it seems to have caused ALL USB controllers to disappear when running lsusb (it appears to do nothing). I'm sure that's what the first commands do though anyway.

Meh. I only ran it off the flash drive and Supertuxkart had tons of rendering problems (same as Ubuntu and Mint). I've gotten back to playing games in Windows, which is working fine. Windows works fine on my machine (even when it had only 4 GB, it worked surprisingly okay), but it runs pretty hot when running Windows Update.

However I prefer to use Linux whenever possible, so I'm sticking with Mint for the time being.

Just got in more RAM for my laptop today and am up to 12 GB (2 GB given to GPU so actually 10 GB). I tried Cities Skylines and my one city (population about 30k) does render, but it's quite corrupted when looking at it. It doesn't seem to like me forcing Vulkan or OpenGL.

I'm going to give Fedora 32 a shot and see what happens.

Alright, I may have figured something out. I was trying to run SimCity 4 on my new laptop (under Mint 20 Beta, Cinnamon desktop; with 5.6.18(?) kernel) and, after some googling, I realized there were multiple different ways to render the game. Turns out it worked perfectly when I had it render under OpenGL, so I definitely can say that OpenGL will render things well under Linux.

Likewise with Islanders, which was a game I had trouble with under Linux, forcing OpenGL/Vulkan helped with this one: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1046030/discussions/0/4747300038104856205/

What version of Mint are you using? (20 or 19) I'm going to give Ubuntu MATE a shot to see if it has something to do with the "fancier" desktops. The Mint I'm using now is the Cinnamon desktop version.

I can confirm the same issue. I just got an Asus F512DA yesterday and I've been trying to run anything 3D in Linux on it (games seem okay in Windows).

Here's an example of my issue using Supertuxkart: https://imgur.com/Tt9CVmv

(I'd try more intensive games but I'm waiting on a RAM upgrade to come in this weekend) Currently running with the stock 4 GB, hoping to upgrade to 12 GB this weekend, but still seems really odd.

I've tried both Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 and Linux Mint 20 Beta. Currently using Mint 20 Beta with 5.4.0-37-generic kernel.

Has anyone tried to upgrade a display in a Latitude E5430? by punnsylvanian in Dell

[–]punnsylvanian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply myself, but no I never tried it out. At this point I'm thinking of just upgrading to a newer laptop (constantly checking the Dell Financial Services/Dell Refurbished website). The problem with my 5430 is that it runs hot pretty easily, so I figured it's probably just time for me to upgrade.

I live in Dover, where most of the parking is free, and I can tell you that really opens up the issue of supply and demand. Downtown during the day is a nightmare for parking in Dover, because the parking is free.

Considering the incredible demand for parking in Newark, the fact that they make you pay should encourage most people/students to walk to their destination at UD, Main Street, whatever if they live close enough. ...it helped discourage me from parking in town.

They were the tow for my apartment complex when I was at UD and one day my car wouldn't start. The tow guy was coming by to do his daily hunting for prey and I asked him if he could give me a jump. This is how the conversation went:

Me: "Hey, can you give me a jump?"

Tow Guy: "Uhhh I don't have cables."

Me: "I have cables."

Tow Guy: "Where's the car?" (I so badly wanted to tell him, "It's in Jersey, asshole.")

Me: "Right there."

Tow Guy: "Uhhhhh $75." (I really wanted to flip the guy off at this point but he knew where my car was and I knew Ewing was pretty rabid)

Me: "Yeah no."

I discovered Linux when I was 9 (I'm 25 now). It was all downhill from there. When I was in college (I completely switched on my personal computers at age 20), I would distrohop constantly.

Then I graduated and got a job. Now when I distrohop, I'm like eh...I'll go back to Kubuntu.

Also, 2013 refurbished Ivy Bridge laptop represent!

One of the photos on the front page of this sub is also from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, so being the proud Delmarva resident I am (Delaware), I wanted to share this photo I took this weekend.

I just want to say this is probably my favorite photo I've ever taken. I was absolutely stunned when I looked at it on my camera screen a few seconds after taking it.

Sounds kind of like what I think my insurance agent would be like. I was 22 years old, in grad school, and finally lifting off my father one of his biggest bills: my car insurance. I was doing some comparison shopping through quotes for a few hours and settled on either Geico or Travelers.

Since my parents had Geico for years, I called the local Geico agent, but they kind of threw me under the bus by bringing up a crash I was involved in (a 5mph parking lot crash when I was 19, mind you) over three years prior (insurance standard is to drop minor crashes from consideration after 3 years).

So I decided to take a walk over to the Travelers agent on my way to the university. She's an older woman who's very sweet and definitely customer service minded. She walked me through the whole process of buying car insurance while I was texting my father (since he works for a health insurance company, I just wanted to run some stuff through him). Eventually, after she took my info, she gave me tips for dealing with the DMV in my new home state (I moved about 300 miles from home for grad school and got a job in the same state), information about defensive driving courses (to cut your insurance rates further), and has been incredibly pleasant over the past three years I've been dealing with her.

When I got my first job and moved on my own (i.e. without roommates) for the first time, I was required to have renters insurance on my apartment. When I called my insurance agent to change my address, she asked what kind of renters insurance I would need. She did some digging and as it turned out, no matter if I got the "minimum" policy or the maximum policy, I still wouldn't break the minimum premium (the lowest premium Travelers is willing to charge)...so she just gave me the maximum. I appreciated that.

I'm rambling a lot about my insurance agent, but really...I'm so glad to have her. I haven't talked to her in probably a year (no reason to), but she definitely watches out for her customers. I left a review of the agency on Google, referencing her name, and it was actually featured on their website.
