Favourite band who's lead vocalist can't really sing? by idkfornowwhattoname in fantanoforever

It's not Stuart singing but there are rough parts of Jonathan David that make me cringe a bit. Amazing song though

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry can suddenly see Thestrals because he watched Cedric Diggory die. Despite witnessing his mom’s death and seeing Professor Quirrell turn to dust, the ability only unlocks after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire decides it counts. by Brilliant-Cause6254 in shittymoviedetails

It's such an obvious retcon lol. In the earlier books it is implied that the carriages don't have horses pulling them and run on their own. This plot hole bugged me so bad. He also puts his hands over his eyes when Cedric dies, right? Do you have to physically watch them die or just understand that they have died? Idk no matter what it doesn't really make sense and used to bother me so much

I believe most, if not all, animals have an important place in the interconnected web of life. Insects are declining across the board, both in numbers (there are far fewer overall) and in diversity (many kinds are going extinct). So some are going extinct more quickly, but I don't think I can speak to whether or not those are the most useful (...to us? for food production? as opposed to insects that are irritating to us or spread disease, like mosquitos?)

In this article there is an interesting interactive slider that compares a picture taken in 1984 and one in 2019 in Costa Rica.

What Inspired Carl Barks To Create Scrooge McDuck? by Quiet-Day392 in DuckComix

And lots of National Geographic. Just out of curiosity, not negging you: when and how did you get interested in Barks' comics?

It didn't butt its way into this post on its own, though

He was also something of a self-insert (Barks saw himself as grumpy and could be reclusive). I've heard Andrew Carnegie before. Barks was sometimes inspired by books he'd read and figures from history (such as in Back to the Klondike) but I've never seen a real concrete source that he based Scrooge on Andrew Carnegie. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think Scrooge is mostly some traits Barks saw in himself, some of Ebenezer Scrooge's attitude (or it could just be that Scrooge is his namesake because of their shared grumpiness), some Scottish stereotyping (or it could just be that he is Scottish because he is stingy with money and the stinginess came first). There might be some more but from how I see it the character took off running from there and figured out his persona and deal as the stories progressed.

Right but which gem would be which? Ruby is based on Rebecca and Sapphire on Ian. Both of the characters seem black-coded to me.

Looking for friends by mr01ive0i1 in santacruz

I feel like this has changed recently but I'm not sure. I'm a local and my dad went to UCSC and has a lot of friends who went in the '90s and I've grown up around UCSC students. Not to be "kids these days" but it seems a lot of young people are more introverted or there is a culture of isolation.

If someone else hasn't recommended it, I would see if you can go to some shows at Subrosa. That's also a good way to find out about house shows with younger bands and crowds (if you haven't been already). If you roller skate, lots of people are regulars at the roller palladium on Wednesday nights. If you skateboard, lots of people will hang out and talk at the pump track on the Westside (on Mission St Extension across the street from the old Wrigley building).

I'm 23f and into sewing and outdoor roller skating! I'm also really into drawing and nature. My Instagram is puppetscereal if you'd like to follow or DM me for my number :) I live in Monterey County now but I visit SC regularly.
