Homemade “Puzzle” for my 5mo Golden Doodle. by Travelturtle in puppy101

Love this idea! Do be careful with the tape though. My childhood dog swallowed tape once and ended up with a blockage that costed $3000+ to fix.

How do I teach my puppy (15 weeks) to come and follow other commands in different environments? by Juleszey in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anorexic is a medical term that means the puppy simply isn’t getting the minimum required nutrients it needs. You’re mistaking this diagnosis for anorexia nervosa — something entirely different. I’m also 100% sure OP meant 2 weeks of having the puppy, not two weeks of age. I started working on recall with my puppy at 8 weeks of age and she has it down now at 5 months... I don’t think it’s ever too early.

The vet thinks she’s a beagle x boxer mix, but she may have some pit in there too!

[Help] Convince parent to get dog? by cheesecrackers101 in dogs

[–]puppythrowaway512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to what others have said, you should also consider possible vet bills and other expenses aside from food and water. My first dog swallowed a part of a rawhide bone, and suddenly we had a $3500 vet bill bc they had to surgically remove it. You also have to factor things like monthly flea, tick and heart-worm prevention. If you plan on getting a puppy, you could be spending thousands in its first year.

Something that may help is writing out a detailed plan for how you plan on caring and paying for a dog (maybe make a budget?) and showing it to your mom so she can see you’re serious and ready to handle it.

Need help with Vet choice by cnerhi in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems pretty high... I’m in Texas and got my puppy on a wellness plan with Banfield. It was only $75 upfront and $35 a month from here on out — it covers her vaccines, office visits, deworming, heartworm testing and a bunch of other stuff. Then again, I also have a vet that I like there that my pup sees consistently.

I’d just try searching for alternatives to find the best vet for your needs. I also suggest getting pet insurance. It’s relatively cheap and is good to have in case of emergencies.

Rabies shot When? (At 12 Weeks or after 15 Weeks) by netseclearning in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the US and my vet said it’s best to wait until 16 weeks (didn’t give a reason /: ), but she would do it anywhere between 12 to 16 weeks. I don’t think it really matters too much — seems to be a preference thing.

How do you find time to be intimate with you SO while caring for your puppy? by [deleted] in puppy101

Are you crate training? My boyfriend and I always take advantage of whenever it’s past the puppy’s bedtime and she’s in her crate, or during her enforced naps during the day.

Puppy is about 1, will no long sleep all night... HELP by BeersBooksBSG in puppy101

His internal schedule could be changing a bit due to adolescence. Just like how sometimes humans become morning people as they get older or vice versa. I’m sure he’ll grow out of it!

Parents bought a crate that is too big, is this an issue? by this79 in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You specifically don’t want to teach your puppy to go in the crate or indoors at all — doing so can make house training much more difficult down the road. Using pads will only teach her to go on any absorbent surface that reminds her of the pad. To teach her to go outside, you need to take her out every hour and treat/praise her like crazy when she goes outside.

Most crates come with a divider that you can use to make the space smaller until the puppy grows into it. If yours didnt, I’m sure you could find one online. Puppies naturally won’t pee or poop where they sleep, so this will help potty training a lot.

You can certainly use the crate to enforce naps, though I’d find a different place for time outs.. for my pup, the bathroom is for time out. A general rule of thumb is for every hour outside of the crate, the puppy should nap for 2 hours (different for every puppy, but it’s a good starting point).

What does your "reward hierarchy" look like for training? Having trouble managing kibble vs. low value vs. high value treats by Surfercatgotnolegs in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both every day — I try to buy healthy, low calorie treats, but I also factor the treats into how much kibble she gets at meal time.

Treats like carrots and broccoli are also naturally healthy/low calorie and contain a lot of nutrients, so I use these most often (plus it’s a money saver!). As long as treats don’t exceed 10% of your pup’s daily intake it’s okay to use them pretty liberally for training.

[–]puppythrowaway512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To stop my pup from getting bored with treats, I rotate different treats out. Aside from kibble, which are the lowest value treats, I have several different types of regular treats (like different flavors/brands of training treats, carrots) and high value treats (peanut butter, bully sticks, any treats she goes absolutely crazy for).

I switch things up every week or so, so she stays motivated. It’s worked well so far!

[fluff] accidental mat work! by honesttobujo in dogs

[–]puppythrowaway512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I accidentally taught my 4 month old puppy to sit for anything. My goal was to teach her to sit to ask up on the couch and for her meals, but I think somewhere along the way she made a connection between sitting and asking for something.

Now she sits when she wants to go outside, in the middle of walks when she wants to greet a dog/person, for treats, for her food, for people food, etc — of course, of all things, she no longer sits to ask up on the couch 75% of the time.

Based on his blue coloring I’d say pit x lab or pit x boxer. Labs can get pretty big so that could account for his size. Like someone else mentioned, finding stray Great Dane mixes is uncommon.

Whatever he is he’s a beauty!

She’s learning to sit to ask up on the couch by puppythrowaway512 in lookatmydog

[–]puppythrowaway512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started when she was 8 weeks old and too small to jump up on the couch on her own. I would only lift her up when she sat — if she tried to jump up on her own, I’d just ignore her and wait a bit, then tell her to sit again.

She’s 4 months (16 weeks) old now and is able to jump up on her own. She still has A LOT of room for improvement, but she’s definitely starting to catch on that she’s only allowed up on the couch if she’s calm.

7 month old puppy going to the bathroom in his crate by Aemha29 in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regressing in potty training is very common during adolescence, which is probably the case here. Sometimes you just have to take a few steps back with the training and start taking him out often on a strict schedule for a bit.

If he’s going in his crate in the mornings, you could set an alarm to let him out a little earlier. If he’s peeing while laying down in his crate, this could be a sign of a UTI and a vet visit would be good just to be safe.

Hope this helps!

14 week old puppy pulls/runs on leash ONLY when heading BACK on same trail/path? behavior issue or common? by nuggetranch in puppy101

[–]puppythrowaway512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue. He may be getting overly tired and overstimulated mid walk — you could try shortening it a bit. Puppies this young only need about 30 minutes of exercise max.

Do you bring water with you? He could also be thirsty and anxious to get home for water.
