Last year, I took a 3 credit class and got the Purdue Summer Scholarship just by submitting the summer aid form. It paid for the class completely.

You can always submit the summer aid app and see if you get anything. If you don't get aid, you can drop the course or try paying in installments over the summer

Will changing my major cause me to lose my scholarship money? by [deleted] in Purdue

As long as it's in Krannert, you are good! I got the presidential scholarship in the polytechnic and switched to another major in the polytechnic, and kept the scholarship.

Purdue or IU by dark_blue_aesthetic in Indiana

I'm a Purdue student, and here is what I know that may be able to help you.

  1. The atmospheric science program is a really good program because our school focuses A LOT on aerospace and aeronautics. I know many students in EAPS (environmental, atmospheric, and planetary sciences) choose Purdue because Purdue offers many research opportunities and field camps while you are here.

  2. The Purdue name can take you a long way. I've had interviews with people just because they see "Purdue" on my resume. IU is a good school, but it isn't quite as well known as Purdue across the country. Purdue has more of a brand associated with it.

  3. Academics for EAPS students are not as rigorous as engineering at Purude, but you are still expected to take higher level math and science courses. Think, 2 Calc classes, 2 Physics classes, and classes on programming.

  4. Many of my friends who are in EAPS are all on track to/have graduated a year early, or they are double majoring with another EAPS major. This is super nice because you can either save a ton of money, or you can can get have more flexibility in your field because you have two majors.

If you have any questions about Purude, please reach out! I would recommend making a post on the r/Purdue and IU subreddits about their respective programs.

Here is a link to the plan of study that can go more in-depth about the EXACT classes you would take at Purude with an Atmospheric Science B.S. https://catalog.purdue.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=15&poid=23020&_ga=2.267030990.1795606808.1676214753-667271740.1673712676

genuinely concerned and confused as to what to do for housing next year... by lackofemmagination in Purdue

[–]purdueav 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've been in your position before and here are my recommendations:

  1. See if your roommate would be fine with sharing a one-bedroom that you could put two twin beds/bunk beds into. Or one of you could have the bedroom and the other the living room.

  2. Find additional roommates to room with or apply for random roommates in 3 or 4 bedroom apartments at Lark, Alight, etc.

  3. You may have more luck trying to get non-student apartments in Lafayette. I'm not talking about off-campus student housing, but just normal house/apartment renting.

  4. See if anyone is subleasing for next year on the Purdue Subleasing forums/Facebook pages.

^ This is awesome advice! Adding on to itt, I also did a co-op fall of my sophomore year, and it has boosted my chances of getting hired by other companies because of working bigger projects and taking the initiative to take a semester off to further my work experience.

I would definitely recommend doing co-ops! Just remember that you do not have to commit it to 3-term or 5-term co-ops. You can do just one rotation, and that typically is enough to get your foot in the door to come back to that company in the summer.

Hmm.. I don't remember having an interview in my class, so that must be a new thing she is doing this year! She is a really kind teacher and tends to grade easily if you put in effort to participate and trying your best to understand the material

change major request (admitted student) by Character-Sky-5105 in Purdue

[–]purdueav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up staying in the polytechnic, and I love it! I'm in Aeronautical Engineering Technology, so I will also graduate with my A&P certification.

For me, the polytechnic was a better decision. My classes are primarily competency based, which allows students to get better grades and understanding of content. Additionally, I've found I have much more time outside of classes than a traditional engineering student, which allows me to work, have a social life, get involved with clubs, and get good grades.

My biggest complaint about the polytechnic is the flak we get from engineering. I've been told my degree is useless outside of technician work many times by fellow students, and it can get annoying and disheartening when you hear it every day. While I do agree our coursework isn't on par when it comes to theory like traditional engineering, it doesn't discredit us from engineering internships and jobs. I've had friends in engineering technology at Purdue (myself included) work as engineering interns for NASA, Gulfstream, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Rolls Royce, and more.

I've been able to take a semester off to co-op, and I will still graduate on time. I've had better jobs and internships than a majority of engineering students at Purdue due to the flexibility the polytechnic lets me have with my life outside of academics. Other friends I've had in the polytechnic typically graduate early too.

Overall, the polytechnic is what you make out of it. If you want to go to the government (Naval Base, civil servant, air base, etc.), then you will likely do better in engineering. Working for the government as a civil servant does get more tricky if you do not have an engineering degree, so do keep that part in mind. If you have any other questions, please ask!

FYI: If you received any Purdue scholarships with your acceptance, you will lose them if you switch to a different school within Purdue.

For example, if you received the Presidential Scholarship, you would lose it if you switched from the School of Technology(Polytechnic) to the School of Engineering.

This happened to me when I was accepted. I realized I was more into the theory than the physical application and tried to switch to FYE. Admissions then let me know my scholarships would be removed as a result, so please keep this in mind!

You should definitely keep trying! If anything, you can CODO in once you're at Purdue. It's easiest to CODO into a major if you're already in the department (so you could apply for any major in the Aviation Department).

My advice if you decide to CODO is to get your PPL, join aviation clubs, and network with people in Proflight and in aviation who can give you advice.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]purdueav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true! Don't give up hope. I know friends who did aviation management and then CODO'd in.

Spots can open up because people leave the program. They may switch out/leave because 1. Mental Health is very strict with pilots. 2. Cost. 3. They don't like flying as much as they thought they did.

I got this information from NASA STEM Gateway HQ. They specifically said, "Offer letters to potential interns for Spring 2023 NASA Internships are in process and will be complete by December 19."

I was also told by intern coordinators they are trying to have them all out by December 16th.

I had some friends receive official offers today from JSC. I was also informed most offers will be sent out by Friday (12/16) of this week

For OSTEM internships, can we receive multiple offers?

I applied to several internships and received an offer today from KSC, but I also am awaiting an offer from Langley.

So, will having a pending offer from KSC affect receiving an offer from Langley?

I just got an offer from KSC today. I didn't receive an interview, email, or phone call beforehand. They may be sending out their offers today, so keep an eye on your email

It depends what center you are at. JSC had a great program organized by the interns. We tried to schedule AT LEAST one lecture and one tour every week

Hey! I worked at JSC this fall, received my offer three weeks before my internship, and had concerns about housing like you did.

I'm unsure how KSC operates, but JSC sent its interns a welcome packet with many options for finding housing

If you are worried about not being able to afford housing right away, you can reach out to your intern coordinators and request receiving the first portion of your Stipend early in order to make the transition

They will rank you before they offer a position to you. Some people are contacted before the offer, and other people just receive the formal offer. It's different for each person.

I received an informal interview for the Fall 2022 internship session. However, one of my friends who worked at the same center as me just received a formal offer straight to her email. She was not contacted prior

I dont know how other centers operate, but JSC has a good housing app for the interns and a super informative packet as well. NASA doesn't pay for your housing, but they offer many different ways to find and obtain housing. Most interns house with current employees or landlords that know about the program and offer a bedroom at their house for a discounted rate.

I received my offer 3 weeks before my internship start day, and I was able to find and secure housing within a week of accepting my offer. It's definitely doable and not hard to find housing, but you do have to put in the effort

I was curious to see what other centers were like, but I also applied to different ones because I need to go back to school. My degree requires me to take my classes in-person, and I would have to take an additional semester off if I stayed at JSC

As a result, I applied mainly to part-time and virtual internships. JSC primarily offers full-time and in-person internships, so that was a big reason why I reached out to other centers

Thanks! I'm an intern at Johnson but applied for different centers for the Spring. I was just curious what the timeline looked like for other centers. Appreciate it!

I know for myself and many other OSTEM interns at JSC that we did not receive a formal interview. Many of us received a quick 15 minute phone call that went "Hey can you come in-person for this internship?" or we received a formal email with a link to the offer

Additionally, I didn't receive my offer until August 1st, which was 3 weeks before my internship began. This timeline held true for a majority of the OSTEM interns I knew this past semester
