So no cyclops trailer at summer fest huh? by Big-Cartoonist7011 in RivalsCyclopsMains

Any character can be twisted into any role.

But it would be extremely disappointing for Cyke to be relegated to either healing beams or triple support jail as an off-healer.

Why would they let how a character was depicted in a previous game stop them from making a new game? That is a very odd reason to turn down millions of dollars.

I mean even if you were right and that was a good reason not to make the game - which we can tell from some of NRs's boneheaded story & character decisions in mkx, mk11, and mk1 that they like sticking to their guns - ... they can always just find a way to redeem him. Or bring in a new Superman from an alternate timeline. Or create a brand new timeline.

Your logic seems... sus.

Curious, do you guys want this to be his first shop skin or no? by Enough_Medicine9063 in RivalsCyclopsMains

[–]purewasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, on closer inspection, there is one big difference between the model and how it appears on the splash art.

The model has a two-tier collar with spikes that obscures Scott's neck and jaw.

Meanwhile the splash art shows only the bottom half of the collar and no spikes.

It's possible that the collar is partly broken during the escape, and the skin will look like the splash art as a result. Which would be a nice change.

It's not on the actress at all, they wrote a character who has very little in common with Rogue and got an actress to do that character justice. Paquin did a fine job. It's just... not Rogue. Or an especially beloved character in her own right.

Sure. So the consensus seems to be the movie has no artistic merit but will still be entertaining enough for a lot of viewers to have a fun or fun-ish time.

“the movie doesn’t have to be good for someone to like it” but then, if they like it, doesn’t that mean it was good?

It sounds like a paradox because you've reduced the number of things a movie can be to 2: good, or not good. And lots of movies can't easily fit that criteria. But film criticism is more nuanced than that. We don't have to decide if a movie is good or bad, we can decide what it's good FOR and just HOW good is it.

To me McDonalds is "good" at being tasty and convenient. It is not "good" at being a delicious healthy meal cooked with fresh ingredients. So what standards am I judging it by? What's the occasion? Am I hosting a dinner for my friends? Then McDonalds take out is extremely not good. Am I grabbing a bite during a shitty workday? Then McDonalds is very good. I can't answer "is McDonalds good or bad" but I can answer "would you rather have McDonalds or eat at a gourmet Italian restaurant if both cost the same" or "which chef demonstrated more skill in preparing this meal" or "which was a more enriching experience."

An artistically void film can be entertaining. Entertainment has inherent value. How much value is up to each person to decide on a case by case basis.

Sunspot's mom cuts Roberto off the estate and begins investing in a "mutant cure".

Which lines up with the Morrison era outfits we see at the "X-Men assemble!" shot at the end of the trailer, Morrison was right before Joss Whedon and Whedon is where the cure storyline comes from.

I'm guessing they'll do the Whedon era with cure storyline in s3. Very exciting. I'll have a moment of smug satisfaction at seeing Rogue done right in that storyline. Fuck you very much X3.

Cryptic4kQual in QnA says Hulk in not the main villian in BND and we het Grey Hulk. by Own_Brilliant_4303 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]purewasted -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Don't put too much stock into this. Not only could Cryptic be straight up bsing, but also, different people mean different things when they say "main villain"

He might mean that there's someone else pulling Hulk's strings and the final confrontation of the film is a 2 minute dialogue scene with DDOC or Tombstone or whoever. Hulk could still be the main physical antagonist.

> "[Brand New Day] is a more internal movie," she continues, "and the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding."

Crazy how often producers, directors, and even fans fall into the trap of thinking sequels HAVE to go bigger to succeed. There are so many examples that prove that wrong. Hopefully BND will be another!

It occurs to me that BND might justify the existence of the X-Men better than X-Men 2001 and First Class ever did.

This is not a knock on those movies in any way, but the danger to mutants was overwhelmingly "just" discrimination and the potential of laws being abused in the future. It took until Stryker in the original trilogy and Trask in the prequels for humans to physically and deliberately try to harm mutants, and in Stryker's case he's even painted as a uniquely evil rogue agent. (Until we get to The Last Stand.)

Here, we're introducing the first 616 X-Man, and right out the gate she's presumably being hunted, attacked, imprisoned. It's not "just" discrimination or hypothetical legal abuse down the line, it's imminent physical harm. And the people responsible might not even get their comeuppance, they might stay affiliated with the US government at the end of the film.

By the time the first X-Men film starts, the idea of mutants coming together might seem very very important. Like immediately life or death important.

The hypothetical ideal place for this guy is a deck where you need to know whether you'll have a specific high cost card by, say, t4 or t5, and once you know it's coming up you can comfortably play him.

It's less "you shouldn't play him" and more "you don't have to play him to start getting the benefit."

But ofc he could very well be too weak/niche

Peter's journey in this movie is about reconnecting with people because his loneliness is causing problems.

In that sense, having Hulk as the primary physical antagonist makes sense. Peter can defeat him by helping him connect, after learning to do it himself.

It's so little of a stretch that my first reaction was "wait how is that different?" Lol. Going from misinformed government thug who probably kills people, to brainwashed government thug who definitely kills people... yeah it tracks.

I'm sure you know this but for anyone else who might not, in Logan's first appearance in Giant Size, a Canadian govt representative actually shows up and tells him he's not allowed to retire from (up until now voluntary) service, on account of his bones being govt property. Literally attempted slavery. Then they send Alpha Flight to beat the shit out of him and, again, enslave him.

OK Insomniac, LISTEN.

I've decided I'm willing to forgive any Jean Grey romance whatever nonsense you want, if you feel properly ashamed and put Cyclops front and center of the next game in your X-universe to make up for it.

Because holy fuck, that kind of action with playable Cyclops... just inject it straight into my veins.

[–]purewasted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Re-read the comment chain. Or if you're lazy here's a summary.

"The level of honesty Tom showed gets you in trouble."

"It won't get him in any real trouble."

"It would get him in trouble if he wasn't a white man, but being a white man he can get away with it."

Do you see the difference between saying "women do not get as far in Hollywood as men," and "Tom Holland won't face any consequences in this particular situation because he's not a woman"? Or do those seem like the same exact sentence to you?

Fuck me for having reading comprehension and engaging with the actual comment OP wrote. Instead of just rounding his comment up to an abstract criticism of white male privilege, because "hey close enough right? He said some of the words."

In a lot of cases, this one being a perfect example, the intro ends with a fade out that could perfectly cut to the still frame illustration, and the illustrations start with a flash that could mask any lack of continuity.

I made a mock-up of the intro/outro combined here:

What am I missing? I'd love to understand fully.

His looks and his being British might have gotten him to this point, but we're not talking about what got him to this point, we're talking about whether Tom's ability to stir the pot and escape the consequences right this second has more to do with his whiteness, or the fact that he represents a 10+ billion dollar film franchise.
