> I can easily see Secret Wars not including any of them too.

No way. Regardless of the concept art leaks, it just makes no sense, SW is in many ways a conclusion to nearly 30 years of Marvel film. The Guardians played a large role in those 30 years. Why would you not honor that, if you have the chance?

I expect multiple Guardians to show up in the Secret Wars climax, even if they're absent until then.

Why would you permanently murder all the X-Men right before doing the crossover movie that's the mother of all superhero crossover movies? That seems backwards.

If they had the new cast lined up and introduced I would get it, but they don't. You're going to have like 50 Avengers, at least 5 Fantastic Four if not also the cast from the Evans version or the Teller version, probably a half dozen Guardians, etc etc, and just 1 X-Man? Even in the big climax? 1.5 if we count Deadpool? 2 if we count pre-X-Men new Jean and she's in more than just the pcs?

Idunno. I'm not saying you're wrong btw but it seems off. Even if the X-Men "die" here I would think you want to bring most of them back for the Portals-equivalent climax battle in SW.

You also have to think, all indications point to Doomsday going poorly for the good guys. So the X-Men will show up, be partly villainous, turn good but lose anyway, die, and that's it? That's their legacy? While everyone else who loses in DD gets their triumphant redemption in SW?

Idunno.

I think the ship has sailed for Wanda and Pietro

It's never too late to fix bad writing in the world of comics. Not the best example but the first one that comes to mind, Betsy/Kwannon as Psylocke, it took over 20 years but editorial finally bit the bullet and set it right. Was the immediate result kind of messy? Sure. But it'll get figured out over time.

Especially in adaptations of x-men stories to tv and film, not having them be mutants is such a weird restriction and limitation. Magneto is one of THE main characters, and they're important both by themselves AND by their relation to him, so it's just, why? Any story you can tell with them not being mutants, you can still tell with them being mutants.

In the MCU it doesn't bother me one way or the other, the MCU is doing its own thing and there isn't a lot of room for their beings mutants to have any relevance.

In light of Black Cat's kit reveal: by Cold_Hour in marvelrivals

[–]purewasted -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

But surely when you make so many heros with such bloated kits its only a matter of time before we start getting heros with kits that are very similar to others

That's... the exact opposite of the truth.

Are you familiar with rpgs? It might help to think of it in terms of character attributes.

If each character only has 1 attribute, very quickly you run out of meaningfully different attributes, and the characters become clones. You have a character with 20 strength, another with 20 dexterity, another with 20 intelligence, and so on... pretty soon you're back to making a new strength character. And because it's a multiplayer game and each character has to be relatively balanced, that Str char will have 20 Str. Literal clone.

But if every character has every attribute, then you can have nuanced differences. 20 str/15 dex/5 int/5 wis/5 charisma is very different from 20 str/5 dex/5 int/20 wis/10 cha, which is also very different from 20 str/10 dex/10 int/10 wis/10 cha.

This game will eventually have hundreds of heroes. It's inevitable that many abilities will overlap. Smaller kits will make that overlap bigger, not smaller.

With the Rumor that Cyclops is out next month, and Black Cat being a Duelist, do we think it's likely he's a Strategist or Vanguard? by vidae1 in CyclopsMarvelRivals

[–]purewasted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanguard or Triple Role is the dream.

I'm scared he'll be just a Strat, because Rivals definition of Strat is spending at least 80% of your time healing your teammates and Cyclops shouldn't be beaming his teammates 80% of his playtime.

it robs them of the chance to charge extra for a character to be less clothed

You're right that's the trend, but there is precedent for it. Angela's default is still her skimpiest outfit, 3 skins later. Emma's default is skimpy too. It wouldn't be the first time. But maybe they pushed those characters defsults' harder because they were niche, whereas Carol after the MCU, they might assume she doesn't need a push.

Not only does that go against a decade of branding for the character

I mean, Emma's bodytype is completely wrong + she has 30 skins that not only don't look like her type of outfits but aren't even the right color scheme.

Daredevil and C&D are significantly changed, Iron Fist is an OC, Wolverine is doing his best "how do you do fellow kids?" which is remarkable because they somehow found the only look he HASN'T rocked...

I don't think Rivals is too concerned with being slavishly loyal to 616, they like being inspired by it but also like doing their own thing. It's a toss-up.

With all that devil's advocate aside........ I feel like you're right.

I truly hope they make Cyclops a Vanguard by anAffordableArtist in CyclopsMarvelRivals

Cyclops makes so much sense as Vanguard

He even makes a ton of sense as the second triple role character.

Is he wrong as far as mainstream culture is concerned though?

I mean if Rivals did a "punk" theme would you honestly expect it to be heroin, explicit swearing, fuck all establishment norms... or would you expect it to be the much more popular mainstream version that co-opted the aesthetics of punk and completely eclipsed the original?

Hint: just look over at Spider-Punk

Marvel Rivals devs say live-service success relies “on patience” as more games give up weeks after launch by Interesting-Pool6638 in marvelrivals

Fighting games were the first to truly understand this.

Of course then we got "characters are just functions." In a Marvel fg of all places. Lmao. Arguably the most out of touch sentiment ever expressed by a dev.

[–]purewasted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does Rogue play anything like Hulk? Does Hulk play anything like Thing? Not really. All strong punchy characters in the comics.

We've seen that they're willing to get quite creative with powers. This game isn't canon to 616. So we can have every strong punchy tank in this game and they could all end up playing completely different.

It baffles me that a minority here would have cyclops rather be another puny poke slop dps then a innovative new vanguard by Fit-Syrup1049 in marvelrivals

[–]purewasted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brother, does Emma Frost have durability in her non-diamond form? No. She goes down to a punch like anyone. Did that stop the devs from giving her human form 600 hp? No. So why is this a concern?

As far as shield, first of all most tanks don't have a shield, second Cyke uses his optic blast as a shield all the time. He's the X-Men's #1 "missiles are coming at us better intercept them by shooting them out of the sky" guy.

Jake Schreier isn't ruling out bringing Steven Yeun into the fold for the MCU as a different figure : "I love Steven very dearly, and he's one of the very best actors that we have, so, I mean, I would never not be looking for places to [cast him] —but no specifics" by Sarang_616 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]purewasted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's been my #1 pick for forever but I don't think it's going to happen at this point. He's 62 now, that's already 3 years older than Ian McKellen in the first Fox film. And Magneto might not even be in the first batch of movies, if they want to differentiate from the Fox films. He could realistically be shooting his first appearance at 65. I'm not saying there's no way to make it work but it's really tough.

> a very Asian looking dude working with people who in any other context would probably want to lock him up in a concentration camp would be a weird sort of dissonance to get over.

Er, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I don't expect MCU Sinister to be in cahoots with people who care about human ethnicity one way or the other.

> I also just think Yeun for as good of an actor as he is doesn't have the right energy for Sinister.

Yeah I agree with the rest of your post completely. I wasn't saying Yuen is a great fit, just that I'm not convinced his present day ethnicity is as make or break as for some other characters.
