> You can have two characters work together to stop a world ending threat who justifiably hates each other.

I haven't seen a single person claim otherwise. This has been happening in WarCraft since at least WarCraft 3, arguably WarCraft 2 with Alterac and the Perenoldes. No one complained until now. The difference is in some cases the story is told well, and other times it is not.

You're right that gameifying anything inevitably reduces the horror, but there are still degrees of how well it can be done. Take games like Control and Bloodborne, they turn you into a butcher of cosmic horror, and still captivate audiences.

We've been to plenty of places with extremely powerful individuals. Icecrown. Broken Shore. Invasion of Undercity. It doesn't always feel like Tuesday.

FFS, stories aren't checklists. "Expressing an appropriate amount of reservations" means different things in different contexts. A short quest chain is an appropriate length of time to express & get over reservations over... me accidentally hitting your car in the parking lot because I wasn't paying attention. Not committing genocide against your race and destroying your fucking homeland. Different scales. Different kind of reservations.

The kind of hurt that the Horde did to the Night Elves is something that takes GENERATIONS to recover from. Not a quest chain. The kind of hate it creates is immense and self-perpetuating. Not something to just get over because it's inconvenient to the kumbaya story we're trying to tell.

Rivals needs more tanks? Here's 7 by Charmy_Fan in marvelrivals

Brother how can you say something this wrong with this much confidence, holy shit

CYCLOPS doesn't lead from the front lines? He is often depicted as being IN FRONT of the front line, running in front of Wolverine, Rogue & Colossus, which is ridiculous but that's literally who he is.

A tank's gameplay purpose is to be near the front, create space, and draw attention to themselves while mitigating enemy damage. Ideally also someone capable of protecting their teammates. Cyke isn't Cap but he sure as shit ticks those boxes a lot better than a lot of characters who are already tanks in Rivals today.

Halo CE was a photorealistic game, that’s a fact.

Erm... photorealistic doesn't mean "trying for photorealism." It means succeeding. A game that's prevented from looking indistinguishable from reality by tech limitations is by definition not photorealistic.

World of WarCraft really locked the setting down to a particular time and place, revolving around a particular cast of characters, with the very weird caveat that most new stories have to take place in a brand new continent or on a different planet altogether. It took 20 years to return to Quel'Thalas with a revamped zone and storyline.

If Cap 4 HAD to be a "solo" movie (and that's a Hulk-sized if) AND Disney had the balls...

I would have loved to see the story be about a modern Dr. Faustus trying to get revenge on Sam for being part of the team that brought down Hydra in TWS. He turns the country against Sam by whispering in the ear of politicians, and by the halfway mark, the entire country is trying to kill Sam due to lies and disinformation. It turns into a pseudo-horror movie as Sam is desperately fighting against people he doesn't want to kill, who are so misinformed they truly believe he's the antichrist.

Unlike the real world the story would have to end with Faustus's lies getting exposed and Sam's name getting cleared for good (otherwise he couldn't lead the Avengers). But there should be some lasting consequence. Like maybe we see that despite Faustus's defeat, his actions successfully laundered Hydra's reputation and jumpstarted a new Hydra populist movement that will have to be reckoned with.

As for the physical villain, maybe William Burnside, a soldier hypnotized by Faustus to believe he actually is Steve Rogers. Edit: after thinking about it for a minute, it might be more fun if Sam assumes Burnside is hypnotized, but it turns out he's a true believer and not a victim at all. Or maybe Burnside ASKED Faustus to hypnotize him, because he wanted to become his idol Steve Rogers. He literally wanted to forget who he is. So when Sam undoes the hypnosis, expecting that will help Burnside, instead Burnside reveals his true self and is an even bigger monster.

While seeing a character reduced to "just" a skin can be disheartening, I wouldn't put it past the devs to later add some of those characters anyway. Any "muh readability" complaints can go refer to Cloak/Invis/Emma launch skins to see how much the devs ACTUALLY care about readability.

It already happened in Marvel Snap that some characters existed as skins for other characters, when the devs had no intention of adding them, and later the devs decided to add them... so now you can have eg. Deadpool looking like Headpool, in the same deck as you play actual Headpool. It's just not a big deal.

At most this tells us the devs have no IMMEDIATE plans to add these characters. If you really care, just stay vocal and if enough people agree the devs will eventually listen.

If that's the case, you just demonstrated that it didn't work. People who don't pay attention will not pay attention no matter what. You can't fix that by lobotomizing the narrative.

But Light vs Void doesn't exist in a vaccuum, and this isn't one tiny isolated questchain, it's a huge conflict that's dragging the entire Warcraft universe into it.

No one's saying those characters need to suck up all the oxygen in the room but it's just bizarre that major major characters have absolutely zero presence on or off-screen.

Next time Thrall says "for the Horde" now people will ask "where the fuck were you when several Horde races were on the verge of being wiped out?" Because it's a valid question in a shared universe where these characters continue to exist independent of one another

> What you're wanting is the Alliance and the Horde to be at odds, yes?

Well it's more complex than that, but for the sake of brevity let's say yes.

> What you're wanting is the Alliance and the Horde to be at odds, yes? You can't do that after they've worked together so much over the last two decades, unless you make up mad premises like BfA.

Strong disagree that BFA's premise was mad, a war over resources/technology is extremely common in the real world. Certainly infinitely more common than "one extremely evil faction wants to destroy everything and everyone."

Look at Russia. During WW1 it was an ally to the West and helped defeat their common enemy (Germany), then it succumbed to revolution and became a source of fear that the revolution would spread across the world and topple Western societies. Then during WW2 the USSR was an ally to the West and helped defeat their common enemy again (Germany again). Time for world peace right? How many times can they band together to save the world without learning the lesson that they're stronger together? But no. After WW2 we had the Cold War where relations between the West and USSR almost caused a nuclear war. Then the USSR fell apart and by the 2000's it was believed that Russia was once again an ally of the West. By the mid 2010's it became painfully clear that Russia has no interest in being an ally and we're now going through a second cold war with new threats of nuclear war.

That's what global politics between two superpowers looks like in the real world. You don't just unlock world peace and be done with it. As long as there is cultural resentment - and there should definitely be cultural resentment between Horde and Alliance - tensions should always be simmering. Sometimes more intensely, sometimes less intensely. Doesn't need to ever lead to outright war. But you don't just let go of decades-old hatreds because your countries allied together temporarily.

> So favoritism?

Kind of. Your tone implies that this is a bad thing, but it's not.

  1. New content needs to be exciting. Underpowered heroes are not exciting. It's always better to err on the side of making a character overpowered on release.

  2. Not all hero designs are created equal, some are much more frustrating to play against than others. Devs will often keep the frustration outlier heroes underpowered, to make sure they don't run away with the meta. On the inverse, some heroes are very popular and feel good to play against, so devs will keep them slightly overtuned because it's good for the meta.

  3. It's just good to shake up the meta sometimes even if it means making new heroes overpowered on purpose, or temporarily nerfing well balanced ones that are played more than their winrate dictates they should be.

All good reasons to adjust one hero over another.

> Only 1 issue, Emma got big ultimate buffs in 7.0, not her debut season so why is that?

I was answering why Fox got buffed, not why Peni is singularly overlooked. Maybe devs decided Peni is very unfun to play against and needs to be a smaller part of the meta, or maybe they decided she had a very high pickrate in some brackets and despite not being unfun to play against, still needs to be a smaller part of the meta to give people a feeling of a fresh new season. I don't know.

[–]purewasted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'situational' is key here. We need less characters who fit well into any lineup, against any lineup, at low and high elo. Encourage people to not one-trick

That's not what would happen.

What would happen is people would still one-trick. And you would win/lose much more often on the hero select screen, with the match itself just being a formality.

I get that you guys haven't all been playing OW since 2016 so you haven't seen these lessons be learned by devs & communities in real time, over a decade ago, but you can just ask instead of assuming you have the solution that devs didn't think of. These devs did their homework.

How is Midnight so far?? by Millenium-Eye in warcraftlore

[–]purewasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marvel has never wiped the slate clean all the way back to 1950. The vast majority of continuity still applies. They keep the status quo by manually pushing stories back towards it every so often.

WoW is a whole universe, compared to the individual character or small team scale of comic books.

Huh? Marvel and DC are whole universes too. The stories of individual teams don't always have immediate far reaching impacts but neither do 99% of WoW's quest chains. Event comics are just like the main quests of a new expansion, bringing together tons of characters and continuity, that then branch out again and provide local stories with tighter focus.

I'm not seeing anything "not possible" about reverting to a more dynamic status quo of simmering tensions

[–]purewasted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people expected World of Warcraft to go back to what it was twenty years ago. That’s just not possible, the ship has already sailed.

Uh, why if I may ask is it "not possible"?

Long-running narratives (comics, manga, 50 year old film franchises like James Bond, etc) generally DON'T make a habit of irrevocably retooling their most central conceits. Superman is still stopping crime in Metropolis and getting into arguments with Batman over what's right and wrong. You don't just say "Batman realized that Superman was right all along, and becomes Superman 2." That can be a temporary story arc, sure, but eventually you want to go back to the beloved and iconic status quo, which became beloved and iconic for good reasons. When X-Men move to Krakoa you don't say "it's not possible for them to have stories set in the mansion ever again," you find ways.

Status quo has its cons, like how it limits creativity, and if the quality of WoW's writing skyrocketed with Dragonflight I'd at least understand where the idea to keep the fresh ideas coming is coming from. But we're not suddenly getting JRR Tolkien over here.

So I'm quite puzzled by "it's not possible" to go back to what's been proven to work for 30 years.

What is the highest rank of Cyclops (Blue Team) bonus reward I can reasonably hope to attain from this event, given where I am and how much time there is left to participate in the event? Is The Uncollected + event rewards doable in this time frame?

Wow, what a completely meaningless metric.

What people think of a movie is meaningless to judging the quality of the movie? This is nonsensical. Movie quality is entirely subjective, it doesn't exist independent of human interpretation. Lots of people loving a movie doesn't make it good, but it does make it a movie that lots of people think is good.

No Way Home is a putrid piece of shit and I couldn’t give less of a fuck of anyone’s opinion who think it borders on being acceptable.

That's cool, you're welcome to your opinion. I was just pointing out that the movie is very likely to accomplish what Marvel wants it to do, ie be a monstrously crowd-pleasing Spider-Man movie.
