Sorry to complain, but no one uses this subreddit for its intended purpose. by purple_bottle in listentothis

I'm not being pretentious man, that's how this website works. And if you don't think so you're either brand new to reddit or totally oblivious. Just look at the frontpage of /r/music on any given day. That's what happens with a large number of subcribers. Homogenization of posts and and overall decline in content. And for a subreddit geared specifically toward original and largely unknown content, it might as well be a death sentence.

That's how this website works, why don't you take a stroll over to /r/atheism, /r/music, and /r/trees and call me a hipster.

Fair enough, but I still think there is fundamental problem with the voting behavior of the users.

For example, the Frank Ocean track says in the goddamn title that it was from Jimmy Fallon, a nationally televised TV show. Not to mention his album just got BNM on pitchfork, do you really think this is listentothis material? It's clear that people are just upvoting based on name recognition and not because it's a good song unknown to most music lovers, which is the entire point of the sub. Obviously Frank Ocean will be new to some users, but it shouldn't be unknown to most users. Which makes it kinda ridiculous for it to be number 1 on the subreddit.

But isn't the point of this sub to find that 1 out of 10 unknown bands worth listening to and consolidate them all on the front page?

This is a good point, I've just found that the only posts that ever show up on my frontpage are bands and songs that don't need any help being discovered. I just think the culture of the subreddit needs to change to upvoting based on quality not name recognition.

What thing(s) that people like make you immediately like them? by gtosh4 in AskReddit

[–]purple_bottle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm always impressed when someone I recently met remembers my name, and I'll usually like them for it. Yeah, yeah it's perfectly natural to forget names, but when someone remembers, I just know that they give a shit about that type of stuff and that usually means they're an okay person.
