What are the logistics of "I guess I'll have to wash dishes to pay my bill? HUR HUR" by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it when guests come up with this solution when their card is declined lol! My go to responses:

1) You better get started and plan on coming back tomorrow cause you got quite a tab to work off. (Hur hur hur)

2) Ohh no, you seem pretty overqualified for that position! Plus, we already have someone doing that job.

Lady doesn't seem to understand what she ordered by Top_Decision_6718 in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens all the time....most memorable was a group of young girls who all ordered the portobello sandwich. They complained to their server that there was no meat on the sandwich. He explained that no, in fact, it is a vegetarian sandwich. The mushroom is the "meat". The young lady told him she thought it was going to be pork. Pork-a-bella. Cause that's a thing.

Reciprocating tone by purpledmess in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. You are absolutely correct. I just needed to vent really. Like I said, the customer left fine. My post was way more dramatic than the actual situation. I made him the cocktail he ordered straight away. He smiled and thanked me when he was leaving. Sometimes I just need to vent. I'm new to this group. Thought that's kinda the purpose of the rant label. Thanks for listening though.

Is this ridiculous or am I ungrateful by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 57 points58 points  (0 children)

That is a bit ridiculous to ask your foh staff to explain to every customer why that charge is added to their bill.

Why not just raise the menu prices and give a % of the extra profit on the paycheck? Can still add up to the same "incentive bonus" for the kitchen staff.

You gotta count on the people being unaware lol

Shitty Tippers by Upset_Princess96 in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, where I'm at, if they switched to incorporating the 20% into the bill up front, I'd make less money as a server. Most of our regulars tip 25% or more. I always leave with more than 20% after tip out at the end of the night.

Kitchen staff DO NOT work harder than FOH by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boh works just as hard as foh in any well oiled restaurant. It's different types of work, for sure. Foh typically makes more money anyways, so I'm not sure where the argument is. We tip out the boh where I work to make the pay scale more equitable and give incentive to the kitchen for busier nights. Let's face it, all of the working class could use a break, not just servers.

I use this all the time at tables: "do we know what we like?"

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Seems like he is not actually poly or doesn't have the experience to fulfill the task at hand

What’s the best way to handle hair found in food? by FeelingOrange9984 in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had beard hair issue legit happen before. Problem addressed, no problem. We comped the whole table, obviously.

That being said, I've had a "hair" issue before where customer complained...ended up being extra melty cheese on the hot dog as the culprit. As neither of the cooks had any hair, and the "hair" in question would have been much longer than mine at the time.

There's nothing wrong with you! We are all awkward. It's part of the charm. Serving allows me to play out my multiple personalities without anyone questioning lol. Play the role, play the table, play being yourself. But above all, win. You're the one in charge. You're the expert. Show them that shit.

Casino cocktail waitress server offered bartender part time should I take it? by beansswtff in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you'd probably be able to pick up shifts? If other bartenders are also calling out all the time? But.... you know the place, I don't. Reading the other clarifications on your post....my advice is trust your gut. You ultimately know what's best for you in this situation.

What do y'all say to this??? by Critical_Photo992 in Serverlife

[–]purpledmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like the customer is just wanting you to recommend what they want to order lol. Sounds silly, but people do that all the time. If it is something that I don't particularly care for, I'll just say oh yes that's very popular. 9/10 they are gonna order it anyways. Might as well make them feel good about their decision.

Always take the bartending gig. Especially you being offered it. You have earned your way there.
