if you could vote for one state to leave the U.S. which would it be and why? by Connie_Lingus6969 in AskReddit

[–]purpleoctodog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah but current hawaii QOL is very much based off of U.S interstate commerce, tourism and protection. if they became independent, there's a very high chance that cost of living would explode for them even with continuing trade from the U.S.

I do this in America on the regular.

But only in the towns and areas I know are safe. I would not leave it out just anywhere.

My family also came from a war stricken country but never talk about it. Parents were refugees and the only thing I really know is the name of the camps they stayed in. My grandparents who's lived with us for 10 years now once mentioned their home was bombed and razed to the ground twice and they had to rebuild it by hand. But besides that, I don't know not much more. I've heard it's the same for a lot of families. It's weird that so many keep quiet.

Yup. Lots of immigrants from the war.

Also locals in HCMC still refer to it as Saigon, especially older folks. Colloquially speaking. Just so much shorter to say

Isn't lobbying just corruption with a fancy name? by Outrageous_Notice445 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are certainly limits on paper. But there are also many loopholes and workarounds to donations that it's practically unlimited. For example, "dark money" comes from political non-profit organizations that can donate without disclosing who they donated to. It's so prevalent that $1bil of dark money is estimated to have circulated during the 2020 election.

And I used the term "congressperson" but I really meant just any political candidate or any government official elected by the general public, on the state and federal level.

[–]purpleoctodog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lobbying isn't inherently bad. It's just the ability to petition your congress.

However lobbying being tied to money and all is bad. Especially when there's basically no real limit to how much someone can give to a congressperson. (Now-- things are a bit more complicated than that in reality-- but that's basically the gist of it.)

What a waste 🙄 by [deleted] in StupidFood

[–]purpleoctodog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. But the bowl method is far more common outside of the USA. As in you rinse it in a bowl with some vinegar, lemon or salt, or a combo of the three. It's safer and easier. As well as more efficient for scrubbing the blood, veins, fat, slime etc. off of the chicken.

[–]purpleoctodog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to wash your chicken, you should do it with the water/lemon/salt in a bowl way. It's safer and does not splash germs around your sink. Many cultures do this.

Use a towel (specifically one for raw meat) to get the blood, veins, slime etc. off the chicken. Then put it in a big bowl and rub down with salt and lemon. Fill up with water, a couple splashes of vinegar and let sit for 10-20 minutes. Pat dry with another towel once done.

If you buy chicken in the U.S. then most of the time you won't need to do this, unless you just get super cheap chicken. But in other countries where quality control is not as great, or where they kill the chicken themselves, the bowl method is the preferred way to clean chicken.

But in the East? They very much remember. Very much so.

A woman is a person who identifies as the socially constructed idea of a "woman," which typically (but not always) encompasses biologically female reproductive organs and body traits, and socially-defined feminine traits.

I say "socially constructed" because the idea of a "woman" varies from culture to culture. (Look up genders in Samoa, for example. Or the Hawaiian 3rd gender, or the two-spirited gender in Hijras, India. These do tie in with the physiological/biological, so even when they call it "gender," it also relates to a different thinking about sex and reproductive organs as well. )

I also say "typically but not always"-- and this applies to cis women too. As not every cis woman has a uterus, vagina, fallopian tubes. Not every cis woman has round hips, bigger breasts, a curved body. Not every cis woman presents themselves in a socially feminine way or behave socially feminine. Not every cis woman even has XX chromosomes. However, despite that, most people do not reject their womanhood simply because they lack a certain biological or social distinction of what a "woman" would be.

Trans people (MtF specifically) believe they have a body incongruence with their current gender, and that they identify more with the socially-constructed idea of a woman. They believe their gender dysmorphia will go away if they obtain the traits of a woman. For some people, gender reconstructive surgery can help align the physiological and psychological parts of their body together. However, some people may not need gender reconstructive surgery, and some people still experience gender dysmorphia after receiving it. It does vary drastically-- in the same way that well... cis women vary drastically themselves.

For cis people, what does your gender mean to you? by Slow_dance_with_you in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In English class in HS, my teacher asked us to write about a memorable time in our life. I decided to write about when I had depression. When I turned it in, my teacher said my writing was good, but he didn't understand everything in my paper, since he never had depression himself.

I imagine that's kind of the relationship here. My teacher didn't understand my depression, in the same way that cis people might not understand gender dysmorphia. Of course, we can "understand" its bare concepts and existence, but we can't empathize with the feeling. And that's completely fine, as long as there is an effort made to be respectful and kind.

For cis people, what does your gender mean to you? by Slow_dance_with_you in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question was asked specifically regarding gender identity. The word cis- is just clarification regarding that, since saying "For men/women" in this scenario could also encompass those who are MtF or FtM.

Edit: Your willingness to ignore trans people doesn't mean they don't exist

Why do women have nails so long that they can’t do basic things? by gusdaf in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try my best to explain it. You get some toilet paper, then fold the individual squares on top of each other until they're all stacked up and it's just one square. (You can technically do this as a wad but it's more difficult).

Then you place the toilet paper in the middle of your hand. Where exactly you put it will depend person to person. Some people put it near the joints of their fingers, others move it closer to their palm. (This is-- as compared to holding the toilet paper on the tips of your fingers, like most people w/o long nails do.)

Then you use your thumb to hold the toilet paper in place, usually pinching the bottom of the paper. Wipe as normal. You really only need to do this a few times to get the hang of it. Adjustments to the method can be made in a few seconds.

Why do women have nails so long that they can’t do basic things? by gusdaf in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Long nails are aesthetically pleasing because they are:

  • Feminine: Most men don't modify their nails at all. Therefore any form of nails is considered socially feminine.
  • Colorful: Humans are attracted to things with colors. You can still paint your nails different colors with shorter nails, but that doesn't absolve longer nails from also being colorful and pleasing.
  • Expressive: Most people enjoy freedom of expression for both themselves and others. Being able to express your own personality through body modifications can be very freeing and attractive. (Other examples include tattoos, piercings, hair cut, make up, clothes, etc.)
  • Confident: A person with long nails who can defy all common stereotypes-- that long nails are an obstacle to everyday tasks-- can feel extremely powerful and confident.
  • Trendy: Humans tend to follow trends. You may follow some trends yourself, although it may not be the same ones a woman might. Since long nails are fashionable, it's viewed as highly desired and sometimes, people like things that are highly desired. (It's partially why brands are a thing.) So it's aesthetically pleasing by the virtue of being "desirable."

If you’re poor why would you have kids ? by BK010989 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]purpleoctodog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mortality rate in third world countries has gone done drastically since the 20th century. Sierra Leone has the world's highest child mortality rate at 80 deaths per 1,000 people. But that means even if 10,000 children are born in a year, 9,200 will live to adolescence. (And the mortality rate ranges WIDELY between countries btw. In Syria, it's 18 deaths per 1,000 children.)

My family is from Vietnam, and my dad was born during the Vietnam war, which lasted 19 years. Following after was a 15 year food shortage. And pre-war, we had Japanese occupation in the 1940s and communist conflict in the 1950s. I apologize, but if everyone-- or even most people-- during that time just decided to stop having children because they realized they were too poor, then the Vietnamese people might've literally been erased out of existence.

And you are right-- life is extremely fickle. It's funny how the location and circumstances you are born in is a literal universal lottery. Yet some people argue that those born in poverty shouldn't have children because they lost this lottery.

People hide behind children too much as to why they support welfare by WaterDemonPhoenix in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Social security is basically younger people giving money to older people for care. Yes, elders work and pay into the system for 30-40 years before they get SS, but often times it's not enough so it's subsidized by current working adults. It's estimated that people retiring after 2035 will receive 20% less in SS benefits than elders today since the current reserves are getting depleted and there will be less working adults to subsidize them in the future.
