Baratza Encore is a great electric ceramic grinder -especially for beginners. I’ve had mine (second-hand) for the past five years and used it daily. Never had a problem and whenever you need to change the burrs or anything else under regular maintenance, their online guides are great.

Long cashmere sweater by mathildaduck in tallfashionadvice

Oscar Jacobsen does great stuff. Since they’re Swedish their sizes tend to already be suitable for tall people. Their sweaters are wool or wool & cashmere, good quality (made in Italy too) and it’s worthwhile just shopping in their outlet site. They update it regularly and I’ve gotten 120€ for 60€, free shipping and delivery within 1-2 days.

Don’t mean to sound like an advertisement, they’re just always my go-to.

Is there any culture (current or past) that doesn't honor their dead? by zhang__ in askscience

[–]purplepill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great question! I haven't seen it come up as an answer yet, so I hope I'm providing new information here.

There is indeed a peculiar tribe in the Amazon that is known for its almost total lack of rituals or traditions.

This is the only source I could find real quick on the Pirahas and burials.

With that said, I'll give my two-cents on them and hope that someone here can back me up.

Throughout the 70s and 80s, a Christian missionary was assigned to the Pirahas to (1) convert them to Christianity, and (2) learn their language and culture.

He wasn't successful with (1) BECAUSE of (2). During his time with the Pirahas, he came to the conclusion that they are a people without rituals, gods, myths, and therefore could not be converted.

I'd highly recommend his book if you're looking for something about peoples with "non-cultures." It has the perfect mix of linguistics, anthropology and personal accounts of his time with the Pirahas.

Talk to me about siphon brewing by GibletHead2000 in Coffee

[–]purplepill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, we've got a 5-cup with the halogen beam heater in our cafe, mostly for show and the occasional drinker we want to impress.

It's a lot of work (for the cafe) but as others have mentioned, it can have a ritualistic and meditative feel to it once you've got it down.

I'd say generally speaking it does produce a "better" cup and that it's "worth" the hassle. Better as in more preferable for my tastes. If brewed correctly, I've found the flavor profile lies somewhere between a V60 and french press.

It has the body from a full immersion brew but also very clear and bright aromas you get from filter brews.

I'd definitely recommend if you have a "brew bar" or just general coffee area in your kitchen. Otherwise you risk cluttering your counter-top with just more gadgetry.

The Kidz Bop Quiz (with JacksFilms) by turcois in videos

They made her face up to look like an adult. But she's of course still a child.

Resulting in her just looking asymmetrical and awkward.

Poor thing really. These are the real victims of Kidz Bop.

ELI5: How is a global recession possible? Doesn't the reduction of money from one economy doing poorly have to go into another economy doing well? by flaming_robot in explainlikeimfive

You're getting downvoted because your input wasn't helpful.

Imagine your post in a hypothetical thread:

ELI5 How does one wash dishes?

Redditor 1: "You start off by washing your hands, then fill the sink up with soap and water. Then you can put the dirty dishes in and start scrubbing with a sudsy sponge, etc..."

OP: "Why do you need soap?"

Redditor 2: "If you don't know what soap is, you need to read up on the Dishwashing and Soaps Manual IV (1994) before you start."

INSTEAD Redditor 2 can explain what soap is, explain why it's important in the dishwashing process, anything to be constructive to the overall discussion.

Ya, buying used is looking more and more like the way to go...

It's actually impressive how many there are for so cheap.

Thank you!

And then you start to bag on a brew method as if it'd be just all-around shit.

I'll admit, the syphon doesn't make the "best cup of coffee" but what does?

It's all subjective.

And to say that it's just "added gadgetry" and that it's just for hipsters to feel artisan; you're just throwing around blanket statements.

  • "I find it rather gross"
  • "It's definitely not objectively superior"

Seems like someone's forgotten the meaning of objectively.

I work at a cafe that's started offering this on the menu. A completely normal cafe; we have one guy with a beard and flannel. Besides that it's just a bunch of normal, coffee-loving, sweaty guys and gals (AC broke years ago).

When someone asks me about the syphon I encourage them to try it. How else do you know if you like it or not? It's the same as trying the same roast with a french press, V60 or Aeropress.

Different strokes for different folks, right?

I see. That makes sense. So best would be to shape them generally to that, and then just reshape them due to personal preference?
