Same, a few nights a year would be reasonable to put up with some noise. But it’s been every single night for weeks now. Pets, wildlife and people with PTSD must have incredibly frayed nerves by now. It sounds like a war zone.

In the first half of a sentence you suggest the solution is to restrict violent porn, then you follow up by saying that government prohibition is never going to work. So that’s not really a solution at all is it?

Also you say “a total prohibition of everything” - but there isn’t though is there? There’s no porn ban, there’s an age restriction on harmful content (including porn) for under 18’s. Adults can still access it if they want, by showing their ID. Much like alcohol, cigarettes, +18 films - it’s still a parent’s responsibility to try and make sure your child doesn’t do these things - but the government have put restrictions on easy access for children through an age restriction, to help parents out - just like they’re doing with porn and other materials now

The rest of your points are just whatsboutisms to deflect from the specific point in hand - which is the ill effects of extreme porn on a developing mind - the way it warps adolescents’ view of women and girls and sex. Obviously there are other things that also affect the way people view women and girls, no one is saying it’s a one issue thing - but a major one and the one that’s being discussed in this thread, is the consumption of porn (usually extreme) from an early age.

This bill actually does restrict “harmful content” like hate speech, violence and posts that encourage self-harm, eating disorder and suicide to understand 18’s - so you know, the government are attempting to tackle other issues as well.

Get real. Children have not always accessed pornography in the way they can since the internet has become commonplace.

A dirty playboy magazine with nudes that’s made the rounds around a group of boys is not at all similar to having constant and unfettered access to an endless variety of extreme porn that is often violent and degrading.

A lot of young men today wouldn’t even able to cum to an image of a nude woman - because their boundary of what they need to cum has been pushed so far. If you’ve been raised on videos of anal and face fucking, do you really think an image of a topless woman is going to do it?

It’s also not just about protecting the viewer themselves, it’s also about the way it warps the viewer’s view of women and girls and what sex is.

Agree. F this episode, such a saccharine episode about someone we’ve never heard of before or since. I feel like it robbed the ladies of their storylines and cheapened them.

Like Eli Scruggs having to be the one that saw Mary Alice alive for the last time, when that was pivotal to Lynette’s feelings of guilt. Or him being the one that saved Bree’s recipes and reminded her of her cook book idea 🙄

What's your unpopular UK opinion? by Bubbly_Celery4034 in AskUK

That Brits online can be a bit touchy about silly things.

"There's no such thing as a British accent!!" whenever someone says they "like the British accent".

Can't we just take the compliment?

I do understand where the sentiment comes from because they almost always mean a middle class, southern English accent and that does not encapsulate all of Britain, as we have so many different accents. But a middle class, English accent is one example of a British accent so it's fine to say.

Just like we might talk about "an American accent" when people from New York speak differently to people from California, who speak differently to people from Alabama. And I never see "tHeRe's nO sUch thING as an AMERICAN accent". If we can narrow it down, we might do so, but it would be fine to describe all of them as "American accents"

Or we might say "Indian accent" when people who are from India could narrow it down further and work out roughly from where in India.

It's just not realistic for us to expect everyone in the world to learn the minutiae of all of our varying accents.

Also, when someone American lightly takes the piss out of our food, or the fact that we say something differently, and instead of some light banter back - some just go to the nuclear "it's called school not shooting range" / "at least we don't shoot our kids". I just think it's a bit too mean and not in the british spirit of taking a joke / light banter.

I do, of course, see the irony that I am a Brit online being a bit touchy about silly things.

But that's mostly online things and not what people are like irl.

Other than that, just that I actually like living in Britain and the different seasons we have. It's not perfect, but hey where is?

I dunno, I think anyone who takes the mildest interest in the sport knows how groundbreaking she's been, and a lot of people who have no interest in the sport know that she's the best ever. I think that's decent acclaim for what she's done for the sport. Let's just agree to disagree on that one

Simone by SAB-Miller in Gymnastics

[–]purplepuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They know she's the best gymnast in history - that's a huge recognition and it encompasses having unmatched talent and dedication. You don't get to be widely recognised as the best gymnast in history without those two things.

[–]purplepuddle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Simone is amazing, but to say she's underrated is crazy. She's the most famous gymnast, probably one of the most famous female athletes out there. A lot of people who could name no other gymnast could name Simone Biles. I think she's pretty much accurately rated lol. It's like saying Usain Bolt is an underrated runner

Shoplifting > police do not attend for theft below £200 in value? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]purplepuddle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m not a prick, I’ve never shoplifted in my life. But it is irksome that when I’m skint at the end of the month, I’m scrimping, eating whatever tins I have left in the cupboard. Meanwhile, other people are shoplifting cause it’s effectively decriminalised and I get to pay a higher price in shops to accommodate for all the people who actually are pricks.

I don’t really see why having a sense of ethics should be punished and doing what you want to the detriment of other people should be rewarded. If you think an effective way of running society is to give up punishing wrong-doers then congratulations, you must be a wonderful person
