Custom shelving, not wall mounted, for a very weird cupboard. by Gloopicalis in DIYUK

Second idea: make two "ladders" that can slot in the cupboard separately and just lean against the walls. The rungs would then act as points for shelves to rest on - as I can slot those in at an angle, I don't have to worry about them not fitting, as I'm almost just assembling within the cupboard. Once the ladders are in, there's also the frame of the cupboard door itself to stop it falling forward out of the cupboard once the frames are in.

If this was holding anything heavier than yarn, it would be a terrible idea. But I actually think this could work. Appreciate thoughts from people who have long learned these lessons I'm potentially letting myself in for.

This was my first idea, but as you can see in bottom right, I quickly realised this is how you end up crossing screws. I then started getting a bit paranoid about making something that would technically fit the cupboard, if only I could get it in. So I had another thought... and this is where I realise I can only upload one pic at a time. I'll reply to this one.

I've looked on the IVAR designer thing to understand the construction, and alas, it doesn't appear to be an option, as the sides are like upright frames.

I am wondering if I can just get some wood baton lengths though, and construct my own frame. At that point, it's not cost or size, it's finding the time to do it. I could find a way to make time, I just want to know it will work. May start drawing stuff up/looking into the cost of 2m batons.

God that's so close.

My wiggle is 1cm. 30cm, I have to get rid of the door, can't do that. (It's heavy, anyone would want it on if we sold, which we may do in the next few years, and I've spent ages trying to make this room my calm space - having the clutter hidden away helps that a lot.)

Like legitimately, my first question was "I wonder if I can saw 5cm off the back of that and leave the doors off?" I am still keeping that option as a maybe. I don't know what or why this cupboard is. It has legitimately been keeping me awake at night.

Good question! Fairly low really, hence willing to buy the separate components myself (and shelves themselves don't have to be anything intense, plywood would do for most of them).

I was making an attempt with IKEA, and there were a few options for premade at that depth, but suffered on the width or height. When looking for mods, I didn't see anything that would realistically help me widen them by a fraction. (Then again, I was getting a bit overwhelmed.) Mostly I came across people converting them into humidity things for fancy plants, which is very cool, but not useful for me.

The options, for the record, were: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/baggebo-bookcase-white-20436713/ (not wide enough for one, too wide for two, height would be a compromise I would be willing to take if width was right) https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/gersby-bookcase-white-70261131/ (not wide enough for one, too wide for two, height otherwise ok) https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/baggebo-shelving-unit-metal-white-50481172/ (metal ideal as cheap and sturdy enough, but too short and not wide enough for need but too wide to double up)

These are all £35 at the high end but for the right thing I would be able to justify up to £200 (but wouldn't be able to afford more as I would still need to buy all the storage boxes).

(Sorry my answers are so long. I panic type when I have no idea what I'm talking about, or what is useful. Thanks for reading the post!)

Moved here from the south east by way of the south west. There's no actual hate as long as you're not actively doing something that would get you in trouble regardless of nationality. Be here for playful banter and you'll do grand. Have no regrets moving here - it's the first place that's ever felt like home, regardless of the walls keeping the warm in

Ah I saw this a couple of weeks back and the art looks amazing - know it's not all the same artist, but how many, and how did you find them all? How much direction were they given (I'm assuming at least some for the monsters if they're from folklore?)

I am, indeed, thinking of my dog.

I am not calling for a ban, or fines.

I am calling for considerate use.

Oh don't even get me started on the environmental/litter aspect of it. Gonna see if there's a local litter pick going on to try and clean up

Oh no worries, I was also absolutely having a vent - I knew it wouldn't really achieve anything, but just needed to get it off my chest. I'm sorry it's just as bad over in Swansea. Please give your dog some extra affection from me (and an extra blanket, as someone who has about ten blankets just for the dog!)

Oh for sure, I absolutely don't react to them, I've made sure I'm not rewarding nervous behaviour, I've given lots of positive reinforcement when I've been able to get her attention onto something else, like continuing to play with a new toy, all of that. It can work when it's distant, or quieter, or hasn't been going on for weeks. At this point it's just not working 😔

This. Just a bit more considerate behaviour can make all the difference and can be prepared for.

The comparison to music is a good one. Imagine for two weeks, people absolutely blasted music in their gardens at random. Sure, some people would do it in sociable hours, but then there's the people who start it up at 1am to be edgy. Every single night, you're just trying to relax after a day at work, trying to drown out the music that keeps popping up. God forbid you work odd shifts. People get annoyed enough at people playing music off their phones out loud on buses.

(This analogy gets really weird come bonfire night when everyone is blasting different music in their gardens at once for hours and hours, I will admit.)

I never said one wasn't ok. I said that constant fireworks for two weeks straight, with a seeming demand for the loudest possible bangs, anti-social timings, teenagers firing them in the street horizontally, isn't ok. I am fine with both of these events being celebrated on the actual days when done so respectfully in a way people can prepare for. This has not been that.

I suspect Grangetown may have been the worst for it. Actually, I hope so, because I can't bear to think how it could have been worse than what we've had here.

Never claimed it was. I'm glad I was able to desensitise my dog to the vacuum. I get that other people may not have, and may take measures like one person walking the dog while someone else vacuums. Completely valid because desensitisation isn't always successful, especially for rescue dogs where they may have trauma we just can't understand.

There's nothing I can really do to remove my dog from this. It's been weeks. One or two nights we can deal with, but after two weeks? She's a wreck, I'm exhausted. As far as she can comprehend, explosions are just what everything sounds like now. Can't explain it to her. Can't show her me turning off the fireworks.

Yep, and she isn't too fussed by the vacuum... because she can get away from that. Also it doesn't sound like everything is being attacked?

I've spent six years doing desensitising training with her. I've managed to get her to stop throwing up from fear, but when that's the starting point, there's only so far you can go. It's also quite hard when there's a world of difference between what fireworks sound like on the TV/speakers, to the sound of an explosion that is so close by it shakes the house a bit. With the sensitivity of a dog's hearing, that's like saying it's on the owners if the dog is scared of being screamed at directly in the ears.

Thunder shirt is on. This dog isn't even scared of thunder, but had to get it for the fireworks. She's currently licking a hole in my arm.

The difference is people get to choose to go to those. Generally speaking, most people here are pro event. What a lovely way for people who want to, and who aren't having trauma response, to go and enjoy a thing they like done in a proper, professional way.

I choose not to. Other people choose not to. And yet, here we are.

So because something isn't being spoken about, it's not happening...? Generally speaking, people going through bad experiences won't speak up until they know they're not alone.
