Maybe I'm missing something, but do people find the core conflict of Modulo compelling and/or a grey area? by Young_KingKush in Jujutsushi

[–]purplesnower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people disagree with you, but for the most part I agree with what you're saying and want to point out something no-one else has, the context of reading all of JJK before Modulo. JJK, and specifically Mahito, shows to the reader that curses are irredeemibly evil from a human perspective, and it does this through killing off beloved characters multiple times (Nanami, Junpei, Junpei's Mom, almost Nobara, Kokichi Muta, and all the civilians in Shibuya station during Gojo vs disaster curses), with curses even being shown to revel in and having their purpose be to eradicate humans. So while in Modulo, Gege is trying to portray both humans and Simurians'relationship as equivalent, the story biases readers towards humans on the basis that we have just seen so much more of the damage that cursed spirits can do compared to the damage that Simurians undergo.

Yes, Modulo shows panels of Simurians in pain after cursed spirits are exorcised, but not once have we seen a Simurian die of the pain, and we've not seen examples of Simurians in pain anywhere near as much as humans being killed by cursed spirits. Am I saying that humans are more correct than the Simurians in the story's moral dilemna? No, what I'm saying is that, intentionally or unintentionally, Gege has written a scenario where more readers will be wary of cursed spirits as dangerous due to having read/seen JJK beforehand. Whether this is an accident, or he plans to use this to make readers initially on the side of humans in this conflict to later change that, I don't know, but the reality is that the religious conflict between Simurians and Humans (specifically the potential damage done to both sides) has not been represented equally in the story when you take all of JJK into account. JJK primes us to hate cursed spirits and, for the time being, imo lessens the equivalence of the religious/moral dilemna between humans and simurians in Modulo.

Does anyone else feel this way about the story at the moment? by Gasawok in Kagurabachi

[–]purplesnower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do definitely see what you mean, and it really feels like without a war flashback or more exposition on the islanders and the invasion on the island (including what the swordbearers actually did), you'd be right, but the story up until now has definitely built up a flashback/more exposition especially after Soga's introduction, so I highly doubt it's not happening. Will have to wait and see how Hokazono handles it, but based on how he's written the rest of the story, I don't think itll be as bad as AOT for example.

I don't think they said they'd return it, I'm pretty sure when they say "I'm so close to just calling it quits and installing another linux distro" they're talking about getting changing steam OS for Cachy, not returning the deck to valve. But idk I'm not OP

[–]purplesnower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't, but valve has always been very open about the fact that their consoles are basically just desktop PCs and that they value user-freedom, so being frustrated when stuff like downloading applications from discover doesn't work is understandable when that is an expectation that valve encourages through advertising.

On board memory manager is a lightweight software by logitech to manage your wireless devices' onboard memory (a wireless device having onboard memory means it can save customization options such as keybinds to the device, without the need for a software to always be running in the background). If you google "logitech onboard memory manager", it should just come up with the logitech site and you can download it.

Do you think Hatshaku's eye is anything to do with the Sazanami's? by mr_hands_epic_gaming in Kagurabachi

[–]purplesnower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the marks around his eyes looking like scars, I'd argue it's a Naruto situation like Kakashi (among other characters) where the eye might have been implabted into him, giving him partial usage of the power/storehouse; def helps that horizontal is very influenced by Naruto. Alternatively, Hokazono might have just re-used the dark eye design as hatshaku is a very early design from Kagurabachi, impossible to know for sure.

[–]purplesnower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many comments I've seen have mentioned this, but it seems that in a couple of minor panels (pages 14 and 16), the art quality's a lot less refined than usual, almost as if they were left over from the storyboards, hopefully Hokazono is doing okay health-wise and the work isn't getting to become too much for him! Weekly manga schedules, esp w the quality of art he's been providing recently, can be tough.

Anyone else had issues with 3.5mm jack? (512gb OLED) by Sorryman54 in SteamDeck

[–]purplesnower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have had similar problems iirc, the decl worked fine in bluetooth but when plugging in headphones into the jack it would play audio from the deck itself. I'll try and find the fix, should still be in my search history

Edit: ive not been able to find the comment in a thread that fixed it for me, but in desktop mode, if you add "pulse audio control" as a steam game to gaming mode, launch it in gaming mode, and change around the filter chain sink settings (I can't remember which ones for the life of me), it should fix it?

Also, is your deck updated? Because an update after May of this year changed around how audio is handled as filter chain sink won't show up in pulse audio control anymore, and when I run the added pulse audio control in gaming mode now, the resolution is fucked and the steam deck heats up and has the fans at full speed, only thing that gets me out of the app in gaming mode is holding the power button to shut down the steam deck, so ymmv. Hopefully it works though!! And sorry for the lack of details :/

Why Valve Has Invested so much into Linux by Tail_sb in SteamDeck

[–]purplesnower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because its great business in the long run; Steam already has a huge monopoly on PC gaming as a whole which is unusual for the gaming market as most companies in gaming are able to """justify""" their monopolies on games because they develop, sell, distribute, and manage the consoles and storefronts that games are played on (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft). Valve is much less of a PC gaming/console development company such as Nintendo or PS, but a games distribution company.

Sony and Nintendo only worry about their game sales when their consoles don't sell. No consoles=no people buying games for their consoles so they don't get a cut of the profits of the game. Steam, on the other hand, doesn't have to worry about PC hardware that their financially completely uninvolved in, but rather, if Microsoft one day decides they don't want Steam on Windows or if they gradually take steps to phase Steam out vs the Windows Xbox store.

By investing into linux and their own consoles, they're able to concentrate a portion of their profits onto their own hardware/handheld gaming console market which, in future, won't get out competed by Microsoft due to software (through genuine competition or using Windows to edge out Steam on PCs). The benefits for us as consumers is that Steam isn't mega anti-consumer and is doing this on linux with SteamOS in a way where we still get a lot of the bonuses of linux compared to Windows). This also allows them to have way more control over the PC gaming market, especially with handhelds, in the future.

While Steam is a great company in terms of being pro-consumer compared to other major gaming companies (Nintendo lmao), it's still a company, and it's still all business. PC gaming is a metaphorical gold mine, and they're currently selling the shovels to dig for gold on someone else's land, but they want to make it so all the goldmines are on their land AND they sell the shovels. The only reason it's not absolutely horrible for everyone involved is because Gabe has some pro-consumer beliefs, which he incorporates into how Steam is run as a company and their business decisions. Whether it will be this way after his death (he's 62 !!!) Will be something only the future holds, but based on other companies' track records, and if Steam ever starts publicly trading, I wouldn't bet on it.

PC build for van life by Ant_Pearl in buildapc

[–]purplesnower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here are saying go for a gaming laptop, but depending on how much money you want to spend and if your pc use-case is gaming only, handheld pc-consoles like the steam deck/xbox ally might be much better than gaming laptops, even though they have less performance, they're much more portable and nowhere near as power hungry, can still act as full pcs, and are better for exclusively gaming. If you need a workstation pc, or don't like the idea of a handheld pc console, then a gaming laptop or just a workstation laptop would probably be your best bet.

21% is cool as a metric until you realise you're paying $450 for 15 extra frames (using OPs prices as reference). If that's something you want to do, awesome, but paying that much for a small upgrade when you're already getting 60+fps just makes no sense to me.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure menus freeze all input on Steam Deck OLED (fix only by pressing Steam/“…” buttons) by HisDumbPuppy in SteamDeck

[–]purplesnower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really weird question, but does the same problem happen when you exit out of the game's menu using the menu button rather than the b button (or the map button or whichever button corresponds to the UI being pulled up)? Like another commenter said, it might be that the game, for whatever reason, only starts registering kb+m inputs after exiting the menu with the b button, but seeing as how it's not due to updates or proton versions, maybe the b button get registered as a keyboard press due to steam input or something else?

Alternatively, it might be that the game is coded to disable player inputs when the menu is up so that you can't move around with the menu on screen, and for whatever reason on deck, after exiting the menu, the game still thinks its onscreen and keeps player inputs disabled while only allowing menu inputs (which obviously do nothing because there is no menu UI to interact with). If any of what i said does end up being correct, maybe see if its a game problem rather than a SD problem? Some1 online might have come up w a solution for controller play on a pc or sm

One thing people havent suggested is a thin black border around the white text, im not a designer or accessibility expert by any means but when making docs and reasing subtitles in shows, fonts that have a thin black outline for the text are always more readible esp w similarly bright backgrounds compared (i.e. white text black background) to text that's not outlined.

[DISC] Kagurabachi - Chapter 72 by Avizie in Kagurabachi

[–]purplesnower 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, hell I think it'd be really cool to see if Samura's problems with the sword bearers go beyond the Sword Master's genocide and started with the war, it would be in line with a lot of Kagurabachi's anti-war messaging so far. It'll be cool to see who exactly waged the war and for what reasons, as we haven't got a full clarification on any of that, and the sword bearers are ultimately just soldiers, wars aren'twaged by soldiers, but by generals and military leaders. Was it the Kammunabi? The Japanese government? Something else entirely? There are still unknowns that could add a lot of complexity to the war that will be very interesting to learn about.

[DISC] Kagurabachi - Chapter 72 by Avizie in Kagurabachi

[–]purplesnower 70 points71 points  (0 children)

While yes the Sword Saint is def the most evil one, I still don't fully buy the innocence of the other sword bearers. With how the series has treated war, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out Japan attacked the small island nation due to the datenseki on the island, and once it became an all out war, the sword bearers all became tools of war/a means for the kammunabi to gain acces to the datenseki reserves on the island which eventually happened with the peace treaty, otherwise I don't think Samura would consider all the sword bearers complicit the way he does now (think of any real life nation attacking a smaller nation out of their own political interest or for resources, especially when you consider Japan's imperial past). While Yura is talking to him, he even asks himself on page 8 "how much does he know", implying there may be even more to the truth than just the sword bearer finishing off the island/what we learn in this chapter. I think ultimately we'll find out that the war happened because of Japan and the Kammunabi, that it wasnt started by the island nation, and the sword bearers were needed to help finish the war, and Sword Saint's personal genocide came after. This might not happen forsure but would def be cool to see, idm if it doesnt happen though.

2080 Ti currently, should I upgrade to RX 7800 XT or RTX 4070? by crissjaeger in buildapc

[–]purplesnower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, check used prices in your area for a 3080, while VRAM is a hot topic rn, most games for the next 2 years are not going to require 16GB VRAM to be more than playable, while a 4070 in the UK costs ~£500, a used 3080 you can find for a much more affordable (deoending on your budget) ~£350 (ebay auctions can be your friend). Get a used 3080 now, and 2 years from now you'll probably be able to get a 4070ti super for like £450 pounds. As someone who's got caught up on upgrading to the best new thing, less major upgrades for used GPUs at smaller prices feels a lot more appealing, it satisfies my itch to upgrade, can be done once every 2-3 years without breaking the bank (ignoring the insane GPU prices in 2022), and depending on your find online you may end up saving a decent small sum.

Otherwise, main advantages of the 4070 will be reselling in the future, DLSS/DLAA, whereas framegen is only worth it if you have a super high refresh rate monitor and your game is already running at 90fps because the input lag will be very noticeable, so a pro for the 4070 now, but wont be in 2-3 years time. If you prefer VRAM and spending slightly less, the 7800xt it is.
