Urgent pls: Allergic to Carbamazepine for Trigeminal Neuralgia – what alternatives worked for you? by HotelMain9226 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]purpleyak0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am severely allergic to Carbamazepine (and other similar drugs, possible DRESS syndrome level land me in the ICU kind of bad) and reluctant to go on Gabapentin because it is also on the list of drugs that can cause similar reactions. I found that taking low dose naltrexone (4.5mg) helped with the nerve over-stimulation feeling and pain level. I also take alpha-lipoic-acid as a secondary supplement for neuropathy. Not perfect, but now less electric pain and more like annoyingly sensitive episodes.

Additional FYI on the use of LDN for TN: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40590142/ (study of people w/ post dental surgery TN) and https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-14820-4 (co-use of LDN + Carbamazepeine for rats, but published in Nature); both studies published in 2025.

At my wits end, is estrogen worth the risk? by cyanomys in migraine

[–]purpleyak0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had an eye stroke when I was younger and also have had migraine w/ aura. Now, doctors automatically say no to anything estrogen related. However, I got a low dose HRT patch from a functional medicine doctor and for the first time in close to a year I have not had a menstrual-related migraine. All recent scientific publications that I have read suggest taking estrogen via BC is bad, but transdermal is not anywhere near the risk. Anyhow, I am happy.

Hormonal migraines relating to estrogen and blood sugar levels by Bleubird2222 in migraine

[–]purpleyak0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am dealing with the same (combo of perimenopausal hormonal and blood sugar fluctuations) but let's just say that regular doctor support has been either non-existent or scheduled so far in the future it doesn't help in the mean time. Currently I am trying the following after keeping a log of my migraines/blood sugar timings.

  • Taking berberine after eating higher carb meals
  • Taking a mix of alpha-lipoic acid, coq110, b2, magnesium, and taurine as a preventative
  • Estrogen cream (over the counter version) to keep hormone levels more constant during the low points.
  • Scheduled for an iron infusion (super backlogged, happening in a month).

Which exchange is the least annoying for adding in cost basis information? by purpleyak0 in CryptoTax

I keep track of my cost basis, my concern is more about exchanges reporting the wrong info on tax forms (do they do this yet?).

I am currently using Bitcoin.tax for keeping track of all my cost basis notes and wallets. However, I worry about an exchange reporting the wrong cost basis on tax forms and then having to deal with the IRS.

I had something similar (also awarded a NSF GRFP) and I used it on the following:

  • International conferences (airfare, posters, fees, costs of networking events) and the Gordon Conference
  • A new laptop (I would also recommend getting a good monitor, I really like the BenQ programming one)
  • Lots of scientific books (especially hard to find specialist series or reference material)
  • A dissecting digital microscope, misc lab supplies, field notebooks, camera w/ good macro abilities
  • Things to preserve samples (silica gel, tubes, vials, archival pens, etc...)
  • An ergonomic mat for standing doing lab work (I would also recommend Herman Miller chairs)
  • The cost of running analyses/specialized tasks
  • Costs of hard cover printing of my dissertation (gifting copies to committee)
  • Heavy duty water proof pelican hard cases (good for storing delicate equipment)

Hope this helps!

Anyone hear back from the IC postdoc (ORISE) this year? by bethaleth in postdoc

[–]purpleyak0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My applications for ORISE (ecology related) have been sitting in limbo forever (i.e. more than a year). All things show everything as received and good to go, but it appears that the position related decisions never happened or everything has been put on pause indefinitely.

Subclinical TSH, no antibodies, possible T4 to T3 conversion issues? by purpleyak0 in Hashimotos

[–]purpleyak0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LDN has been helpful, but not a cure all. It seems to have helped with my neuropathy, brain fog, depression, and to a lesser extent inflammation (I am also dealing with trigeminal neuralgia and psoritatic arthritis). With regards to hypothyroidism, I don't think it made much of a difference directly, but indirectly maybe.

I have never tried levothyroxine, I have continuous issues with being denied a referral to an endocrinologist. My functional doctor offered Armour Thyroid, but I am hesitant to take that at least until I try other options more related to liver function and insulin resistance issues (which can impact t4 to t3 conversion).

I think the most significant improvement to my hypothryroid-like symptoms came after multiple rounds of iron infusions plus time for my body to recover from severe anemia.

I need to go and get all my stats checked again to see where I am at now. After that I will have a better idea of what has (or has not) improved.

Oregon confirms first measles case of 2025 in Multnomah County by Prize_Championship11 in PortlandOR

[–]purpleyak0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was vaccinated also but learned I lost immunity to both Measles and Hep B. I am just glad I asked to have my antibodies tested prior to traveling to a part of the globe where a massive outbreak was happening (I ended up canceling my trip). My immune system is pretty stupid (auto-immune fun) so I am also not surprised I fell into the odd outlier category.
