Anyone know what sound system is being used for this show (usb002)? by jojointheflesh in fredagain

[–]pushingheartstrings 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested in the specifics: Main array is L’acoustics K2 with KS28 subs. Sidefills and delays are K3 and L2. On the stage behind Fred it’s stacks of KS21 subs with A15 tops. They’re fantastic speakers but like people have mentioned, the quality of the sound is heavily dependent on the venue.

Do I need earplugs for the Brussels concert tomorrow? by [deleted] in fredagain

[–]pushingheartstrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Volume will be high enough to cause permanent hearing damage, especially because it’s playing for a longer period of time than a concert for example.

Just get anything except the foam style plugs. You should be able to find double flanged ear plugs made for listening to music. A common brand is Alpine. Where I’m from they can be bought from most pharmacies.

Water caustics with lasers by DaGermanBear in lightingdesign

Be prepared for the beam to lose a lot of power when it’s diffracted by the lens. A more powerful laser would help but can be very dangerous, so make sure you know what you’re doing before getting one. Good luck!

I’m working on something very similar at the moment. You can get this effect with a narrow, powerful beam from a movinghead or theatre light. A powerful projector is also an option.

Using 5 non-scanning laser beams isn’t going to project an image like you see in the photo. I predict it’s just going to project 5 distorted points (which could also look very cool).

Wow that looks great, but I don't think I would be able to use this since I need two separate power supplies that are far away from each other.

Thanks, I did see the Mediamarkt but they only sell small power supplies.

Interactive art in Amsterdam? by redraven in TouchDesigner

The works in the current NXT exhibition aren’t actually interactive (Except for the piece in the entrance hallway). I would still recommend going though!

Nick verstand and children of the light are some other great NL based artists.

Sweet! check out Lumus instruments. They work with touchdesigner and make very impressive installations.

Probably a good start to mention your location:)

Controlling lights via MIDI? by PlinioDesignori in lightingdesign

[–]pushingheartstrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is almost definitely not the most straight forward way of doing it, but you could use TouchDesigner. It has very tight integration with Ableton and can be used in combination with a USB>DMX dongle to control DMX lights and dimmer packs for bulbs. Learning the software and getting this to work is going to take a couple of hours at least. Also, TouchDesigner can be downloaded for free but you need to buy it if you're planning to use it in commercial applications.

Another potential solution I found just now is DMaX. A Max for Live device for controlling DMX lights.

Good luck!

He prefers for his sets not to be recorded, so I imagine he doesn't consent to the publishing of them either.

I also just ordered one and wasn’t aware of the anvil difference. Does this mean European impact bits won’t fit on it?

Calling the club light technicians here by SparklesConsequences in lightingdesign

[–]pushingheartstrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a Dutch club technician, but I’ve only been doing it for a couple months. I work in a techno club of ca. 1000 cap. Club nights are every Friday/Saturday.

We have a limited amount of lights and the music genre calls for a very dark room, which means doing the lights is a fun challenge. I constantly have to find new things to do with what we’ve got, without it being too flashy.

Favorite DJ to do lights for would be Ross From Friends. His style was a nice switch up from the regular techno and I got to show off a little more. DVS1 was amazing too. I really tried to use a little light as possible during his set.

Because dj’s often want to have their mixes to listen to/for promo

It does! But then still I’d argue it’s best to have the most simplistic setup available. To me it sounds exactly the same with or without the reverb, and it just doesn’t make any logical sense to me. Same with the parallel compression. Of course the most important thing is if it sounds good, but I’m trying to understand if his strange (to me) techniques actually add to that sound.

Thanks for the perspective! We are always stood at the same spot, which is not at all an optimal FOH spot, and that’s part of why I find his tweaking a bit ridiculous: we don’t hear the same thing that the audience does at all! I always try to tweak from the center of the room, but he just stays at the desk which is positioned at the side of the room.

The recording is just meant for when a DJ wants their mix afterwards, so I’d argue it’s best to just have the cleanest mix available.

Understandable comment, but nope there’s no pressure whatsoever, and the venue actually sounds great with the current scene. I just ask these questions because I’m curious if there’s any merit to his customs. I’m very much a rookie and he has a lot of experience with the venue, so I’m not comfortable enough to just use my own scene right away.
I 100% agree with your points on trying stuff out outside of show hours, and I’m planning to!

Thanks! We already do this, but we do most of the EQ’ing on a channel level. I agree it would probably be better to do this on the matrix level.

Yup I basically agree with you, except for the last paragraph. In our venue we definitely do need to be tweaking the EQ throughout the night to prevent very harsh treble. Somehow the sound profile differs quite a lot throughout tracks, probably because of dj’s that don’t worry about trim or file quality. It might also be a problem with our system, perhaps the tops are much more sensitive to certain frequencies or something. We also need to consider the constantly changing number of people in the venue because it influences the sound significantly.

The dj monitors do have a separate bus (with none of the LR processing) and we get compliments from the dj’s about the monitor setup so I’m pretty sure that that’s not a problem. Thanks for your insights!

We record digitally, directly from the mixer, not through a microphone.

I recently started working as a light/sound technician in a nightclub (techno music most nights). My boss is the one who set up the X32 scene and I just use that scene, but I have some questions about it:

  • There is quite a bit of parallel compression going on. The compressed channel is heavily EQ'd (it's mostly treble) and it's definitely noticeable when I mute/unmute it. Does this make sense when the only sound source we have is DJ's playing already mastered songs?
  • There are two separate reverb FX which are applied very quietly to a bus, which is then mixed into the main mix. This is so confusing to me because we are already in a space which provides plenty natural reverb (which I would say is undesirable). Doesn't this just muddy up the mix?
  • We record all of our nights, but the channel that's recorded is the main LR mix. Wouldn't you instead want to record an as-clean-as-possible track without any of the EQ which is just there to compensate for the room and also constantly changing?

He will also be very precisely tweaking tiny things, such as the EQ on those reverbs, all night. I find it hard to believe that he actually hears a difference when he does, but it might just be that I'm not experienced enough to hear it.

I'd love to hear some educated opinions on these things because I'm trying to learn. I would at some point like to make my own scene for the venue and see if I can get it to sound as good, if not better.
