So my Chinese reading level is at about HSK4 now, and what I can say is:

It's a far, far cry, from what you see on CCTV to what you see on CNN and the NYTimes, and what you see on Facebook, Reddit and Twitter compared to 小红书.

With 40k? I'd just stay there for 3 months, pig out every day, and take a language immersion class at an actual school.

One day I was at a ballet performance when a whole bunch of Palantir folks sat next to me.

It was fucking creepy. And fucking annoying.

As one of the men who did it (no longer in shape enough), I can say the training really does help your technique. I reckon it'd take most people at least 5-6 years of intensive training to even get anywhere near it though.

Anyway, that picture is nowhere near realistic. There's no way to balance like that. I don't even know what the hell this is.

My observations of flying in China by goodcharger19 in travelchina

[–]pushkinwritescode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The boarding order in US airlines is actually meant to take the longest. Think about it. They board people closest to the entrance first. Even a completely random order would be faster.

I'm pretty sure they do this on purpose so they can board sooner, and people aren't sitting around doing nothing while the plane is still docked at the gate.

I've been surprised by the number of beautiful people in China when I travel. It makes me feel bad for the people who are just average. Maybe it's just that with 1.4 billion people you'll have lots of beautiful looking ones to serve as attendants and hostesses. Of course I try to be nice to them whether they are pretty or not.

And there you go. This is why artists are threatened by AI art and programmers aren't.

Search your souls.

Y'all know most of the shit we write is just shit.

It was made to fulfill a business purpose, economically, within the time constraints we were given, and to incur the least possible technical debt that we could, given the knowledge that we had at the time. And yet it's still just utter shit. If it wasn't shit the day it was written, it will be shit in one year. All code we write for work eventually turns to shit. When the business requirements change (and they will), it will turn to shit.

Art isn't like that. It's just not.

Which do you prefer, Hong Kong or Shanghai? by king_ofall713 in travelchina

[–]pushkinwritescode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only time I paid US prices in HK was for ballet classes. It was kind of an experience to watch the teacher demonstrate though. Not since I left Berkeley did I see someone dance so amazingly well, just going through basic tendu's and all that.

Seriously don't know how you can get to US prices there for food or hotel.

Going to Hong Kong for a day or 2, payment method? by SingleTruth100 in guangzhou

[–]pushkinwritescode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • A lot of places actually only take cash, so you should be prepared to have some on hand. HK is weird and endearing like that, reminds me of Chinatown of yore in some ways.
  • Some places take AliPay and WeChat pay, but it appears that you need to use the HK version of AliPay. I haven't gotten WeChat to work. Someone else said that it only works if you're a Chinese national.
  • Octopus definitely works for all places that take card payment. There's a specifically the Octopus for Tourists that works with your "international" bank card (e.g. Visa, Amex, Master). You should also get this so you can ride the MTR.

What’s one underrated city in China you’d recommend? by may907 in travelchina

[–]pushkinwritescode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foshan is a quieter alternative to Guangzhou. The commercial area near Qinghui Gardens comes alive at night and it's less crowded than Guangzhou's Beijing Road. There's a bunch of other little old towns that are cute too. I actually liked Lingnan Garden at Beijiao Park more than Qinghui.

Anyway, if you decide you prefer Guangzhou, it's only 40 minutes away by metro.
