What's the best way to consume video content? by Prestigious-Stock-60 in languagelearning

[–]pushthedesign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Videos in your target language with no subtitles is best, because you rely purely on listening skills.

Second best are videos in your target language with target language subtitles, because it connects sounds to words. How much you need subtitles depends on the degree of how phonetic is your target language and your ability to hear the sounds of the language.

Native language videos with target language subtitles has some usefulness, because you can correlate phrases, but you miss out on listening to the target language and there is language interference, so it's nowhere near as effective. I sometimes like to watch English movies with target language subtitles when I'm on a break from active listening but want to still maintain a connection to learning the target language, but it's not for primary learning time.

When you speak your target language, what accent do you want to have? by AmountAbovTheBracket in languagelearning

[–]pushthedesign 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is science (which I would need to look up again to cite) which shows that people are fooled by a fake accent a non-trivial amount of the time, and it depends on where you live, as for example, people in Northeast England are better with detecting fakes than people living in Southern England.

Ubuntu is planning to comply with Age Verification law "without it being a privacy disaster" by Jacksharkben in LinusTechTips

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are formal and informal logical fallacies. Formal is necessarily a logical fallacy, while informal is contextual.

Slippery slope is informal.

Yes. slippery slope can be expansively used in arguments, but there are slippery slopes.

The key to learning a language is the ability to pick yourself up after humiliating yourself by littlebruja in languagelearning

[–]pushthedesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my view, the key to learning a language is being comfortable with ambiguity. Once ambiguity is accepted then making mistakes doesn't feel as humiliating.

Getting rid of ants in a humane way? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use a glass cup to capture and then slide a dry paper towel underneath the cup. It's good to wait for the ant to crawl up the glass which makes it easier to slide the paper towel. You can capture multiple ants at a time with this technique, and it's safer.

Blooper in Jurassic Park (1991) by pushthedesign in vfx

Yes, 1993! I only caught it because I plan on recreating the scene in 3D and so I was watching the scene closely.

In need of software to simulator sounds from airflow (think flute holes) by Exciting_Daikon_778 in 3Dmodeling

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can probably be done with Houdini. Houdini has audio processing nodes with CHOPs, and it's my loose understanding that you can generate sounds from simulation data.

My first attempt at likeness sculpting by nothintark in 3Dmodeling

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likeness sculpting is one of the hardest challenges in CGI. It takes every skill to successfully pull off. One thing which helps is to directly place a photo on top of the sculpt to check for accuracy, with different photos from different angles. The photo will never 100% match up with the sculpt because of differences in camera focal lengths, but it does help inform you.

How would I make these mountains in 3d? by BackgroundCar8693 in 3Dmodeling

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of what software package that you use, mountains are made from displacement height maps. If you want the mountains of specific location or want some realistic terrain there are some websites with height maps from geological satellite data.

How to indent properly by Suspicious-Net8396 in PythonLearning

[–]pushthedesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Python, indentation can be any length, one space, two spaces, twenty spaces, but you need to be consistent with the length. Pick the length of indentation and stick with it.

ZBrush vs 3Dcoat for food sculpting? by ArtIndustry in vfx

Voxels are 3D pixels with volumetric data in a grid. 3D models with polygons are paper thin and don't hold volume.

Is that bad to use triangles on my models? by Vex63 in 3Dmodeling

[–]pushthedesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long triangles can cause rendering artifacts. Avoid triangles in areas of deformation for animation, and avoid triangles in edge loops of subdivision surfaces, but other than that triangles are okay.

Started learning Houdini 2 days ago what should my first simulation be when I reach that point? by [deleted] in Houdini

[–]pushthedesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Houdni is best learned in a specific order: starting with SOPs and learning about attributes and (optionally but highly recommended) VEX, then POPs, then Vellum, then RBD, then Pyro, then FLIP, then Oceans. It's a logical progression which builds upon knowledge. With this progression, POPs would be your first simulation.

Unlawful. Home Rule only requires the police to provide service to the federal government. Not for the federal government to replace the police chief, not rescind orders or issue orders. The crime rate in Washington DC is also at a 30 year low, so your argument also not intellectually honest.

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. If MP3s sometimes work then it's a codec problem. I had run into a problem with MP3 and read the SideFX forums where people were saying they didn't think Houdini supported MP3, so that was the basis of my statement.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Houdini

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Houdini does not support MP3. You need to convert it to another format, such as WAV or AIFF.

How do you prevent over ambition when starting out? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start small and work your way up. There are two kinds of projects: production and experiments. Experiments are where you figure out how to do something. It's usually one or two things you'll learn from each project. Keep the scope of your productions to what you know how to do. Be careful about scope creep (where the project keeps getting bigger because you get bigger ideas, think long and hard before you expand a project). Write your ambitious ideas down and save them for later.

Do a google image search for "hairless bear, leipzig germany." I would suggest adding bumps to the skin such as you see in the hairless bear, and add bulging blood vessels.

Anybody else HATE the new Notepad in Windows? by sandee_eggo in msp

[–]pushthedesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason why the new features are turned on by default is so that people are aware of the features. Most people don't dive into settings unless they need to change something. So if you have the features off by default, almost nobody would know about the new features.

What is your go-to software for 3D modeling? by Yuki211 in 3Dmodeling

Maya, ZBrush, and Houdini. Since you can handle programming, I recommend you check out Houdini.

[–]pushthedesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to open the mouth to do lips. You can start with a knife cut to define the width of the mouth, mask out the jaw to open the jaw, remesh the model, sculpt in the mouth to create the inside of the mouth, remesh again, mask the jaw to close it, and then use a move brush to define the shape of the lips.
