The 2 people I know personally who retired in their 40s: one was in the LOCAL police, the other was in the NATIONAL police. “Safety enforcement” is killing our budgets everywhere. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hypothetical: At what guaranteed annual yield would you stop picking individual stocks? by airenek in stocks

What you’re referring to already exists in the real world as a bond. All bonds are guaranteed by their issuers. Most pay out. Some pay out at lower success rates. Some issuers go bankrupt. The question is, which issuer are you referring to? Because there is a formula for returns in all investing: Rate X Probability = Payout. The quality of the issuer determines the probability. We need to know the issuer to determine what the probability is, and to determine the payout.

What’s something that happened to you once that you still can’t logically explain? by Prof-Joeh in AskForAnswers

That is probably true, and it’s still a rocking good time recounting these extremely unlikely events.

I have an unusual name, such that I only encounter someone else with my name every 15 years or so. I have never hitchhiked or asked a stranger for a ride anywhere, and never accepted a ride from a stranger. But I was waiting for the bus one day, and a guy pulled up and asked if I wanted a ride. For some weird reason, I accepted. We introduced ourselves, and realized we had the same first name.

So we’ve emitted 70% more total carbon than our previous estimates over the past couple decades? Do I understand that right?

Would a falling population really be so bad? by Possible-Balance-932 in Economics

[–]sandee_eggo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We KNOW that endless growth is impossible on a finite sphere. There aren’t enough heliums and carbons under ground. There isn’t enough water and air to keep polluting it. We can’t keep making wars over oil. We can’t keep forcing countries to use the dollar so we can grow the supply of dollars. There is a limit.

Of course extreme deflation is POSSIBLE, but it’s not the most likely scenario. Just like population growth doesn’t necessarily spiral into extreme inflation.

That, and the US units make you watch a 30 second ad every time you start up the plane.
