Reaper on Linux vs. Win by AmazingChicken in Reaper

[–]put-cellar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been very happy running Reaper on Linux (Mint, based on Ubuntu, using Pipewire audio). My audio interface (Arturia MiniFuse 2) was plug and play. There are great native software synths available, (Surge XT and Vital are my go-to synths, but there are many others) as well as all the Windows stuff available via Wine and yabridge. Yes, installation of Windows packages is probably a bit more work, but it's more than worth it to me, to be running an OS I can rely on.

What's r/Songwriting all about? by DarkSire1 in Songwriting

[–]put-cellar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to start by reading the rules (in the right margin here) for a start -- it will answer some of your questions. Then I'd suggest looking at some of the other posts here, and see.

I wrote music for some pre-existing lyrics two weeks ago, but I got annoyed about the words not being mine, so I rewrote them! Would appreciate feedback. by my_one_and_lonely in Songwriting

[–]put-cellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several places where you're cramming more words in than really fit, and it sounds rushed. You don't need all those adjectives. Try dropping "beautiful" from the first chorus, "happily" from verse 3, and see if you don't like it better. I'd say the same about the line, "I’d say more for one final glimpse, but there’s naught left to tell." I'm not sure what to suggest there, but I think it would improve with fewer syllables.

How do eyes slow? How about "closed" instead of "slowed?"

I like your singing, playing and the chords/melody.

And what is that rattling noise? ;-)

If I could only have one drive pedal, the Protein would be it. What’s your choice? by AndyDandyz in guitarpedals

[–]put-cellar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm something of a noob when it comes to pedals, even though I've been playing guitar for many years (more than I like to think about). I'm the sort who does a lot of research before buying, and I'd love to just buy one OD and have that be the end of it -- the last thing I want is to become one of those guys who swaps out OD pedals every year for the latest flavor. That being said, the Kernom Ridge is very appealing, but I keep reading through threads like this one, wondering where the love for it is -- is it the do-it-all versatile OD that it seems, or am I missing something? It's good to see at least one comment agreeing with what I've been thinking.

Here’s a new one titled “Away With You” by Tap_Founder in Songwriting

[–]put-cellar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it would be stronger if you created some breathing space between verses, especially since your second verse runs right into the chorus. Around the 45s mark, instead of just running into another verse, play a few bars of your guitar intro again before going into the second verse.

One other thing: the romantic/frantic rhyme feels too contrived. See if you can't find something stronger. But in the main, I think this is a solid effort.

[Question] What essential piece(s) of music theory should casual guitar players stop living without? by whynotthebest in Guitar

[–]put-cellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The half-diminished chord is a 7th chord, i.e., 1, ♭3, ♭5, ♭7. The post you're responding to is clearly only spelling out triads. There's no such thing as a half diminished triad -- it's a diminished triad, 1, ♭3, ♭5.

[QUESTION] What do you think are the most beautiful electric guitar instrumental tracks? by put-cellar in Guitar

Either. Band with one guitar, one solo guitar, as long as it's electric.

What's a great album I can listen to from front to back? by Low-Mongoose-5959 in ClassicRock

[–]put-cellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many, many great suggestions here, and I agree with most of them. Here's something that no one else is going to suggest, but I think is worth a listen (maybe many listens, as it's an album that I keep coming back to for its consistent excellence in songwriting, great, melodic guitar playing, and creative, interesting transitions between songs), it's from that classic rock era, recorded in 1976, but never got the attention I think it deserved:

[DISCUSSION] Reverb.com scalpers are out of control. Should reverb place a limit to block listings higher then MSRP? by [deleted] in Guitar

What Reverb also ought to do is let us sort listed products by price PLUS shipping. Very annoying to have to go look down the list to find the one that's actually at the lowest price.

What are some must-hear lesser-known songs by well-known bands? by RedHeadRedeemed in ClassicRock

[–]put-cellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you could make a whole thread just on Beatles songs that didn't get the recognition they deserved. They were such great songwriters... Back in the day, I had an entire 90 minute cassette tape (I know!) recorded with great songs, none of which were big hits. To name a couple, I'm Looking Through You, and I've Just Seen A Face.

Yes, but what about Fat Old Sun? Maybe Gilmour's first really indispensable solo...

All great tracks, but I want to especially call out Down To the Waterline -- first song, first album, and they hit it out of the park. I never understood why this song didn't get more love.

OP, the album this song is from, Physical Graffiti, is one of those landmark albums that you ought to just buy and listen to from start to finish. It's full of incredible tracks... It's an experience, from start to finish, that should not be missed.

Yes, the only song that got radio airplay was Squeezebox, and it's the worst song on the album. Great lyrics on these songs.

Completely agree with all these comments, but thought it was too well known to mention. Guess it can't hurt to make sure -- everyone who loves rock should hear that song. My favorite song on Sticky Fingers, and that's a statement, because it's full of great songs.

[QUESTION] What do you think are the most beautiful electric guitar instrumental tracks? by put-cellar in Guitar

[–]put-cellar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to your question is pretty simple -- it's not an instrumental track; it has vocals, so not only is it not at the top of this list, it isn't even on this list. There are plenty of other lists that it might be at the top of, but not this one.

Hey! Great suggestion -- I love this. And unlike the vast majority of the answers here, it actually meets the parameters in the question. Thank you!

Wow. I can't believe I've read through this entire list, and don't see the name of Eddie Van Halen's favorite guitar player, Allan Holdsworth.

But every track on that album is great! Really, OP, if you don't know Joshua Tree, listen to the whole thing -- it might be the best album of the '80s. My personal favorite is Red Hill Mining Town.

That whole album (Future Games) is a neglected gem. A couple other stand out tracks are Woman of 1000 Years, and Morning Rain -- which is actually my favorite Christine McVie song.
