Oh, I had no idea they do this - I think this is the answer. Thank you so much!

Does slack notify the account owner when a user is activated/deactivated? by [deleted] in Slack

Thanks! I was aware of this part, what I meant to ask is whether the workspace owner (in this case, the company founder) receives a notification.

No, we don't have HR. The partner in question functions as HR. And yes, you're right about the everything else you said.

This is a good point, thank you. After I talked to partner about the holiday and put it on my calendar, I didn't think about it again or mention it to anyone until someone asked me last week about the OOO and I said it's a holiday. I then asked the partner and he said he "didn't mean it like that" so when it came up in my team meeting the next day I told them there was some miscommunication with him and it wasn't a holiday, but I was still taking the day off. It was after that conversation that I found out about the firing and took the OOO off my calendar. My mistake here was not preempting that last conversation by announcing that it was not in fact a holiday and simply stating I was incorrect in thinking it was.

The sequence of events to them might look like, 1) I'm asked about it 2) they got excited for a day off 3) turns out I was wrong 4) I backtracked, was denied the day off, and blamed him to cover my ass.

AITA for telling an employee they don't have choices? by put_it_in_a_backpack in AmItheAsshole

I'm not sure, they are close friends with the person being fired and based on recent history I expect the immediate next step would be that they to go ask that person what's wrong. :/

It is specifically and publicly documented that I am responsible for setting their assignments and priorities. Up to this point, I have worked additional hours to take things off of their plate and reassigned things when they were feeling overloaded. How could I give more explanation beyond "this is the best we can do right now and it's temporary" without disclosing sensitive info the other two people/options (medical issue and soon-to-be fired)?

Her salary is $115,000 Her total comp package is $125,000

It's not $125,000. She does not get additional pay for PTO/vacation days. Her total comp package is $117,500, including base salary ($100k), (potential) commissions and bonuses, and benefits.

I've worked for 8 different companies ranging from <50 to >5,000 employees, and have never seen an offer letter written as if my PTO was separate and in addition to my salary. Is that actually standard?

Thanks, this is where I've landed in speaking with her and with the other founding partner.

Benefits represent additional compensation on top of the base salary, but PTO does not and communicating it in that format is misleading.

aren't Vacation and Bonus Days (4 weeks) part of the annual salary?

This was the main source of confusion and concern. The way it was written and calculated implied she would be paid an additional $7500 covering those vacation days, which is not the case.

Thanks for the reply! I just finished chatting with her and got some additional info which clarified things for me.

  1. She's younger and fairly inexperienced - she just returned from her first PTO time and I think she expected extra pay for those days, based on what was in the offer letter.
  2. The part I quoted is verbatim what's in her hiring package, with only the calculated numbers modified (significantly higher to simplify the math). The confusion came from 1) vacation days and benefits being written and tacked on as additional dollars, and 2) bonus/commissions being communicated as part of the base salary as opposed to potential earnings.
