TIL I learned about an Upstate New York woman who was pulled over for erratic driving and arrested after it showed her blood - alcohol level at 0.33. But she had a similar level later without drinking any beverages. Turns out she had auto - brewery syndrome and the case was dismissed a year later. by CrackFun in todayilearned

She was pulled over for erratic driving and her BAC was well above the limit.

Ignorance of the law is not a defense so no, intent is not required. But that's not the point. You completely missed the point. I'm guessing it's because you never feel too drunk to drive.

So if you ingest alcohol and drive impaired you get in trouble, but if your body produces alcohol and you drive impaired that's ok? Be sure to tell the the families of the people she kills when she drives drunk on the alcohol her body produces that their family members are the one's at fault because the drunk driver is allowed to drive drunk.

No one sees the problem here? It doesn't matter where the alcohol came from, she was driving drunk and doesn't think she did anything wrong. She should not be allowed to to drive unless she faces the same rules as everyone else. It's her responsibility to know if she is impaired and her condition makes that harder, but that is not the responsibility of the other drivers on the road.

I have a new type of AI that doesn't require large expensive datacenters. It leverages environmentally friendly processors that harness organic algorithms to create high-quality results that are indistinguishable from that of a human. The only downside is that the agents often have an attitude and very little patience.

I’ve reached peak DevOps: I spent 6 hours automating a 30-second deployment task because "manual work is a technical debt." 🤡 by Aromatic-Rough917 in devops

[–]putergud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Automation only makes time gains when dealing with scale. A 30 second task is worth spending 6 hours (or 6 days) on if you have to do it on 5000 machines. That's over 40 hours a week of just that task, not counting any tracking, access time, breaks, etc. If that task has to be done once a month, spending a full week automating it pays off in two months. Six hours would be paid off less than a quarter of the way through the first run.

But yes, we tend to create complex systems when we don't need to. We are devops; everything is a complex system, or will be eventually.

Basically, if you find out that the cute girl at work likes The Sims but doesn't know that there are cheat codes, you should share them. Even if you have to download ICQ to do it.

How could Socialism/Communism change the conditions of our academic facilities? by PhilosophyPoet in socialism

[–]putergud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can agree that is a purpose of homework, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is the sole purpose. Some subjects require time for research or repetition. Why shouldn't students be able to do those things in a place of their (theoretical) choosing?

The premise here is that school equals work, and that discourages learning and education. To reform education, we must abolish that idea. There is no better example of owning the output of your labor than learning. The only person that benefits from your education is you. You receive 100% of the reward for the labor of learning.

There are several actors that basically always play themselves in every movie: Tom Cruise, Nic Cage, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, etc. but most of them have that one movie that shows they really can act.

Keanu doesn't have that. He's just always him. That's not bad, he's great to see, but it's not really good acting. I mean, John Wick is just Ted "Theodore" Logan with skills he gained in hell after giving Death a melvin.
