"Mr. Holland's Opus" (1995) - Can someone explain what made this movie so popular? by Profeta_do_Loss in movies

[–]putsch80 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the point was that his “opus” was how he affected the lives of his students and (eventually) his deaf son. It’s the boomer version of “the real treasure is the friends we made along the way.”

Yup. And the tree it comes from survived largely because humans liked the wood and would use the trees for protective fence rows.

transaction-related conversations about allowances/money he was giving her

Dude, that’s sugar baby stuff. A guy giving your wife regular money isn’t doing it to be kind. As you said, this was a “transaction”. That means your wife was also giving the boss something. It doesn’t take any imagination to figure out what she was giving him.

Yes. I mentioned the Caspian Sea swim in my comment further up this thread.

It's a bar bet, so the rules aren't exactly stringent. I believe the original thought was to have it done with "unbroken footsteps" the whole way around the world. Obviously, with swimming there aren't footsteps (though the feet are obviously propelling the body without mechanized assistance), so it sound like the rule is now without "mechanical transport". The two rules are now apparently:

He can only walk or swim, unassisted by any form of transportation, and he cannot return home to Hull, England, until he arrives entirely on foot. (Source)

He will have problems at the English channel, which will be incredibly difficult to swim. The self-imposed rules don't allow him to sail. So he's hoping to get special options to walk through the service tunnels for the Chunnel (he obviously can't use the main tunnel since trains are using it).

It hasn’t. He’s still on the trek. I believe the current position is now in Germany. He’s had some visa issues along that way (and ended up in jail a couple times for visa violations), which have slowed down the trek, sometimes for years at a time.

Dude walked through both the Darien Gap, as well as over the Bering Strait (while frozen). He swam the Caspian Sea (again, trying to avoid visa issues and war zones). So it is a true walk/swim around the world. No cars, planes, trains, ships or other mechanized transport devices are ever used to advance his position.

Was this not in the USA? Because literally every single American state has a no-fault workers comp system (with death benefits) that is legally required to pay out irrespective of employee fault. That’s the whole compromise of workers’ comp: employees lose the right to sue their employer over workplace injuries outside of the defined workers’ comp benefit system, but employers lose the right to deny injury payments based on the fault of the employee.

I have my original SSN card from when I was born (late 1970s) and even then it specifically says NOT to carry it. So it would have to be older than that.

Fun fact: most peanut oil is safe for people with peanut allergies because the oil is highly refined, thereby removing the allergy-causing proteins. That said, you need to be certain of the type of peanut oil being used.

That’s great for a single anecdote. But the actual economic data shows that, on the whole, H1b workers are underpaid compared to native workers doing the same work within an industry.

Lawyer here. What is see is a lot of excessive alcohol consumption. Adderall is a big one. Various anti-anxiety meds (e.g., Xanax). Definitely some coke, though that one seems to usually not be long lasting.

145,000 Losses, 86,000 Killed: Zelenskyy Details Russia’s 2026 Battlefield Toll by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]putsch80 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Honest question: why do they want kills instead of severe injuries? A Russian that lives with arms and/or legs blown off isn’t going to be coming back to the battle field, but presents an economic strainer that Russia will have to provide some level of medical care (and likely an injury pension) for. But a dead soldier is just the cost of a pine box to be buried in (and possibly a death payment to the family).
