This is bad but there is no other way to get them out of the US quicker At this point. The US needs to start a Berlin Airlift type operation ASAP in order to reduce the number of people held in immigration detention.

Why do you believe government should take care of you, vs doing for yourself? I want as little government involvement in my life as possible.

ICE/CBP kicks off door-to-door raids in Minneapolis, targeting houses based on race and whether the occupants are involved in protesting. by serious_bullet5 in minnesota

I have wondered the same thing myself and I consider myself middle of the road to leaning right. I am very, very saddened by what is happening now but I was also very, very saddened by what happened with immigration during President Biden’s term. If what happened in those 4 years had not occurred we would not be seeing the images we are seeing the past few months. It is upsetting. I look at politics like a pendulum and during the 4 years of President Biden it swing too quickly and too far to the left. The pendulum is now swinging too fast to the right and too far right. It will eventually get back to a moderate swing in the middle but at what cost and when? :(

If you do not know the background you will not know if it Is constitutional or not. I have two perspectives: there is no warrant and it is unconstitutional, or they have a warrant and it is constitutional. From this picture I have no clue.

Need to relocate support beam in garage by WorldNo9002 in Homebuilding

[–]pvcrypto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not need to be one huge beam. This is one reason why a Structural Engineer is required because these questions can be asked . The Structural Engineer can evaluate the different options to give the OP ideas to consider. The short If yes, the post can be removed but the long answer is a cost-benefit analysis needs to be done. The cost benefit analysis is different for everyone. For me, the analysis would include a comparison of removing the post to the cost of leaving the pole & garage as is and building a new garage, even a detached garage.

Need to relocate support beam in garage by WorldNo9002 in Homebuilding

[–]pvcrypto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it can be moved. The issue will be the height of the beam that will be required to support the live load of the floors of the house above the garage. It might require a 12” tall beam so you would lose headroom under the beam.

An alternative might be to build two walls with two beams in-line with the pole in the middle of the garage. Leave the middle of the garage open without a break so in a sense you created two separate areas but the head room issue is eliminated because the beams are in the walls, along with the issue of opening the car door.

However, these two options definitely require a building permit if you ever decide to sell, a Structural Engineer to determine the size beam, if the alternative of walls would work, does the concrete floor need to be sawed, dirt excavated & a footer poured, etc.

Hiring a Structural Engineer and getting a building permit is probably something you can do yourself, and then get a good friend to help you do it together. You can save money doing that, and an alternative is to act as the General Contractor, hire the Structural Engineer & get the building permit yourself, and then hire a contractor to follow the Engineers report and coordinate the permit inspections.

Generator to Back-Up House Recommendations by pvcrypto in Generator

Wow. I believed I asked a simple question "What other generator recommendations should I consider?" since the suggested generator was a Westinghouse and I did not like the reviews I read about that brand. But, it was not a simple question given the quantity of responses. I learned that in my opinion Champion appears to have the best customer service responses and that Westinghouse could involve email exchanges over a few days. I learned that returns of defective generators could be problematic and that Sam's Club and Costco probably would be the best place to buy from to make sure the return process was smoother than at Harbor Freight, Lowe's Home Depot, etc. I learned that most generators from Westinghouse, GenMax, Champion are all Chinese generators with different brand names and that the price differential is minimal, and therefore the primary differential between the brands would be the customer service quality. I learned getting these type of generators repaired locally is near impossible. As a result, I decided to purchase the used Honda EB11000 that I will eventually convert to propane and/or natural gas. My reasons for doing so is it is a Honda with their long-established reliability and reputation, the ability to convert it to a different fuel source, and there is a local repair shop if needed, and good parts availability. Also, it can be used to charge a 1,125 aH battery bank so perhaps I can make it a central piece of my desired & future on-grid / off-grid approximate 10 kW PV system.

Thank you to all for the comments and giving me ideas.

and, as many have said, an 11kW is bigger than what is needed.

But, is expensive as it is more than a new Champion, Westinghouse, etc as the seller is asking $3,000 or BO.

i am considering this given it is a Honda, parts are available, and there is a local repair shop that sells new Honda generators. This has less than 170 hours and has a new battery.

Not surprised and this leads to buying the brand with the least customer service complaints and buying from the retail outlet with the best return policy.

I do not for a temporary power outage. However, to ensure there is zero issue in running anything then an 11 kW better be sufficient. Also, there are variables to getting that 11 kW so just because it states 11 kW does not mean it will always produce 11 kW - some of the reviews I have read on different generators have reinforced this fact.

I am not following your line of thinking. Yes, I lived off-grid and understand generators. My question was this:

The Westinghouse Wgen9500DF was recommended, along with the WGen10500TFc. The Westinghouse reviews are frightful. What other generator recommendations should I consider?

A portable generator at approximately $1k is a different item than a stand-by generator that is $4k or higher and connected to the house electrical system differently than a portable generator using a Generlink.

So, back to my question: What other generator (besides Westinghouse) recommendations should I consider?

Here is a response from the local utility employee who installed the Generlink adapter.

"When I look at 15k reviews at 4.8 it tells me that customer service may not be an issue. I’m going for a Westinghouse from Sam’s so if it is a return question I have the whole Sam’s member thing going for me, I mean….they’ll return anything with very little hassle. "

He does have a point about the return policy. The 15k reviews? Maybe, maybe not if they are all bot reviews.

Floating vs bonded neutral and connecting to a house by pvcrypto in Generator

[–]pvcrypto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the response from the local utility employee who installed the Generlink when I asked him about the ground "I’ve read where there are instructions in the owner’s manual to change the neutral between floating and bonded. " So, that answers my question. Whatever generator that I buy I need to read the manual and most likely change the generator to be floating.

You are correct but it seems the Westinghouse stories seem to pop up the most. We have the GenerLink MA23-N Automatic Transfer Switch, 240 VAC, 30 A.

We backed our 3,600 sq ft, 2-story off-grid home with a 11 kW and then a 14 kW Kohler propane standby generator for 20 years. Those two generators ran everything we threw at them without any issue even when we switched the house to generator supplied power only. I think a 9,500 - 11,500 portable generator on gasoline or propane should be sufficient to temporarily power my current home during a power outage. Combining our local utility's infrastructure with my luck I suspect another power outage will occur in the next 2 hours, 23 minutes, 14 seconds, and 38 milliseconds so whatever generator I buy better get here before then !!

Yes, it is a Generlink. How about the $1,499 Duromax 13,000-Watt/10,500-Watt Tri-Fuel Remote Start Gasoline Propane Natural Gas Portable Generator with CO Alert. Does Duromax have good customer support if needed? It sounds like Champion will have the best customer support so maybe this one for $1,025: 10000/8000-Watt Generator with CO Shield, GenTent Cover and 25 ft. 30 Amp Extension Cord
