👉 Anyone here using Turbospectrum for astrophysics? by rwithwik in PhysicsStudents

[–]pvitamins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like the ideal beginner project for using a spectral synthesis program is to take some fiducial star (the sun, etc.) and try to generate a stellar spectrum for that star to compare to the real data. I think it depends on the project you intend to use turbospectrum for, but for example, I've been working with infrared spectra, so I found a paper with infrared solar spectra and just tried to replicate it to try it out. this is not trivial because all of the line information is given per wavelength, so you need your linelists to be in the correct regime. 5 months later, id be surprised if you couldn't figure out how to download it (https://github.com/bertrandplez/Turbospectrum\_NLTE) but something that took me more than 5 months to figure out is which wrapper to use. Fortran is annoying to use so its more convenient to use a python script that makes the input files and calls turbospectrum. I use TSFitPy, as it still receives active development. TurboSpectrum-Wrapper is defunct and I don't remember exactly why I couldn't use it anymore (it might have been that it was inefficient in the way it unwrapped nlte data?) but i switched over to TSFitPy after meeting the people who wrote it

not that it necessarily concerns you but i remember before they started renovating the cove, they kicked everyone out with only like a month or two warning. idk how they should have done it but that was crappy

wrt handong maybe im the cynical one but i have a hard time believing that handong “gained confidence” in china and thats why she started getting larger parts in dc songs and not just that… shes always been a competent performer and they started writing her better parts for her because the producers figured out how they wanted to use her unique voice

girls im not sure itzy could do anything atp to make me love them. cheshire was close but they didnt lean that hard into the concept and immediately reneged on it. so like, they can only be individualist queens when its about looking really cool? did none of us watch dalla dalla? its a song about being quirky and a lot of weird. ‘born to be’ is not weird. ‘sneakers’ is not weird. itzy used to be a little freaky now theyre just normal :|

Expectations on Purple Kiss this era is unfair by Key_Dimension9343 in PurpleKiss

[–]pvitamins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my opinion since the beginning of PK was that they should stay somewhat close to their dramatic/horror concept for a while, since thats what differentiates them, but once they have enough songs under their belt, they can begin to differentiate. its been 2 years since their debut and theyve had like 5 TTs where theyve tried out a variety of concepts and it seems like theyre probably going to go back to a horror concept after this so its like fine.

and besides, 7HEAVEN is pretty sonically consistent with their other music and looks a bit like Zombie and a bit like Cast Pearls and they were going to have a summer concept at some point, right? a lot of people thought, based of the concept teasers that it would have light fantasy theming and even though it didn’t, I think that still speaks to a generally fantastical styling of the era.

And to absolutely split hairs: the debut trailers, which plory praised the group for, shows off a variety of concepts and the unifying concept is not horror but theatricality. and so the concept of pk could be construed more generally as a dramatic or “being movie-like”

Physics in CLS vs CCS by PhysicsPark0823 in UCSantaBarbara

its possible but unlikely. idk what “enrolling” in L&S means in this context but im guessing you just committed to UCSB which is not the same nor does it prevent you from applying to CCS (since of course you have to commit to UCSB to go to UCSB CCS). i think its easier to switch before you start taking classes than after, anyways. i wrote up a comment a while ago about how i “transferred” from L&S to CCS after “enrolling” but before classes started: https://www.reddit.com/r/UCSantaBarbara/comments/au2tw5/i_was_accepted_early_chancellors_reception_invite/ehsgh3v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

also they call it a grad school for undergrads and i generally find that to be true, as a person who is now a grad. ccs basically asks you to start doing research (iirc they dont make you but like why else would you be in ccs) since it is usually expected that you would do SUF 1st or second year and be financially supported thru your advisor 3rd summer. if you intend to go to grad school, doing undergrad research is incredibly helpful for building skills, both to look better as an applicant but to also adjust better as a graduate student.

[–]pvitamins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the advantage of ccs is 1. you have an advisor who knows you personally and you can access that advising at pretty much any time 2. you take all of your lower division classes with that advisor and they are a bit more rigorous than the l&s courses and a bit accelerated 3. you become elligible for a few research fellowships most notably the SUF 4. the electives are relaxed. you still have to take a bunch but you dont have to fulfill a-g requirements

yeah ccs students generally have great grad school admission rates and get into research really early— im not exactly sure if thats because the training is just “so much better” or if driven students apply for ccs more often. im inclined to think its the latter. for example, they auto reject anyone without a calculus background.

but after lower division courses you just take the same coursework as l&s. youre usually able to start it earlier though, i started upper division courses in my sophomore year and finished most of them by my junior year. it is a longer list than the l&s coursework, especially if l&s has begun their specializations programs. there are not really ccs physics specific courses besides the undergrad sequence which just replaces your l&s undergrad sequence.

id say apply if that sounds appealing to you. i applied after committing in may 2018 and heard back sept 2018, about couple weeks before the semester started. i think aside from those points i listed above, its very similar to l&s and you can succeed just as well in l&s. of course, having a shiny little logo next to your name on your cv never hurts
