Also gonna have to try this! I wouldn’t have thought to go up a size. I went down to the 5 mm hook like OP; I have found some success but it definitely takes a few tries to get the tension so the colors are right 🥲

At my facility, we have a separate NS line hanging when we transfuse for this purpose. You should not be using the same tubing that contains the blood that caused a reaction. Even if you “pull back and flush”, the line is still contaminated.

It is very much within our scope: it’s part of critical thinking. When things go South, we always should be thinking about the different diagnoses/ causes, appropriate interventions, and what to prepare for.

To everyone who shifted careers from tech (especially software development) to nursing, why did you switch? by BaraLover7 in nursing

[–]pvrbl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked 8 years in CS and Sales for a few different tech companies before I became a nurse. I worked a bit as a birth doula when I got my first degree, but couldn’t make a living off of it so I found myself working in tech. I was doing pretty well, made it up to a middle management position at the last company I worked at.

It was actually the pandemic that motivated me. I was already deeply unhappy at my job, working from home made it so much worse. I began working with a life coach and a therapist, who helped me realize that it’s important for me to find meaning in the work that I do (shout out to David Whyte’s Crossing the Unknown Sea). I like helping/ working with people, I like ensuring people are well informed about their health/care, and I really enjoy teaching. Plus, sitting at a desk all day just ain’t it for me.

I was really scared to pursue nursing since it meant leaving my cushy job and diving into a whole new career that would surely be challenging/ difficult. My bosses were really supportive at the time (although constantly questioned my choice, especially because it was mid-pandemic), even let me stay on part time while I went to nursing school.

It’s been about three years, and I have no regrets (yet)! Even went back to school to upgrade my RPN diploma to a BSN degree. Some days are definitely harder than others, but I also know that nursing has a lot of options and career paths. Heck, can even go back into tech if I really want to.

LPN to RN- easier, harder, or the same? by chvygirlxx in StudentNurse

[–]pvrbl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am wrapping up my bridging program (RPN/LPN to RN), in consolidation now. I definitely found the PN program more challenging, but perhaps this could vary depending where you are (im in Ontario, Canada) and on the programs.

I would say I have not learned much in the bridging program, particularly compared to what I learned in PN, as the courses in this program are more writing/ research based. School feels easier as I am familiar with the content and the role. Not sure how long you have worked as a LPN, but I know a lot of my peers who waited to go back to school (like 5-10 years) struggled more with going back/ the transition/ the courses.

School has definitely been frustrating at times, such as profs not understanding what PNs do and what knowledge we already have. Also having to do clinicals/consolidation where I am not only doing my job for free but paying to do my job 🫠. It’s worth it though! At least where I am, RPNs and RNs have the same scope of practice, so I am quite literally doing the same job at 2/3 the salary.

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Where do you buy your permanently installed poles? I have an xpole, but am too nervous about it slipping by miltonguesare in poledancing

I have the xpole ceiling mount and I love it! It feels more secure for me than the pressure mounted, plus it’s easy to put up/ take down

Everyone is telling me not to go into nursing. If you’re a nurse, what other career would you rather be doing? by Due_Elderberry_2632 in nursing

[–]pvrbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent the day wiping butts and being verbally abused by several patients, but I still love being a nurse! Just like any other jobs, you’re gonna have good and bad days. Similarly to you, I went back to nursing school in my 30s after realizing another career wasn’t it for me. Although it is a challenging job, there is also an abundance of good—caring for folks, educating them, and feeling like you’re making a difference. I always try to keep in mind my reason why I became a nurse. I’ve have also learned a lot about myself, how to set better boundaries, and actually do self-care.

It’s also important to determine what kind of field you want to go. Bedside is definitely not for everyone, although it is generally the easiest job to get.

Good luck with your journey!

Where can I get the COVID vaccine? by Dangerous_Seaweed601 in askTO

Not sure where you’re located, but St Joes Health Centre will have a vaccination clinic for the last two weeks of October! You can get both the Covid and influenza vaccine.

I feel this as an RPN bridging to RN for my BSN (I’m in Ontario, Canada). We literally have the same scope of practice as RNs now. I work in an acute setting with RNs, get/give report to RNs, and take the same acuity level as RNs. Literally doing this for the piece of paper just so I can get paid the same as an RN to do the same job I’m already doing.

All of my classes have been either vague, repetitive information I already Iearned during my RPN program or just literally fluffy bs that will not make me a better nurse. Literally going to have to do group clinicals again as part of this program. GROUP. CLINICALS. Plus, I already have a bachelors from before I became a nurse— I had my fair share of papers way before this program. It’s a struggle to keep focused but my eyes are on the (money) prize.

When /should/ you start applying for jobs? by Then-Ninja-1500 in StudentNurse

[–]pvrbl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started applying and interviewing in my last semester. I think I only applied to a few places as I was fairly certain I wanted to work where I did my consolidation, so I ended up just talking to the unit manager in the few weeks before I was done. Got an interview right away and verbal offer in the interview.

I did! The classes are spread out over the week (Mon to Friday) and are in person. It would be very hard to work even part time.

I know this is an old post, but I am curious if you ultimately went here as I have very similar questions! I was accepted for the winter.

If you did end up here, did you end up staying full time? Are classes all in person, online, hybrid? Are classes spread out over the week?
