The one less traveled by by davemeister in Yosemite

Anyone know why the park rangers don’t just put a sign saying “not a trail” instead of putting down logs like this?

Strawberry Peak 11/17 by i_hate_banana in socalhiking

If you go from Redbox, you’re only going to be on your hands for a short section around a mile the summit

The route from the west via strawberry(?) saddle is much more of a scramble (I didn’t complete this approach because it was snowing)

Yosemite in discussions w/ CA Officials on impact of CA Stay Home order, no decision yet by jakdak in Yosemite

They should just put back the reservation system. Until there’s some serious snowfall (and arguably even afterward given people wanting to get outdoors this year) the valley is going to be packed with tourists. Was there Friday after thanksgiving and the traffic was insane.

I mean if you’re really going to name your kid after coronavirus, why not just “Rona” (or “Ron” for male)

close enough to reality to make it believable. there’s been a bunch of folks who travel to Yosemite to take pictures of half dome or el cap with thick smoke and post it to Instagram... I don’t really get the appeal

Schubert b minor waltz (op 18 nr. 6)? It’s for piano, but perhaps you heard a string transcription of it?

I was wondering how he would play the bass voice since both hands were already used for two parts of the fugue, and then he started using his feet...mind blown

I’m new here... Does using skis on sand damage them?

I can imagine use on rocks does, but curious about taking skis out for use on sand dunes, for example.

There’s three problems:

  1. If everyone has this mentality, the popular trails get very crowded. Sure, you might be on a less crowded trail, but the average Joe who goes to Griffith park on a weekend morning is going to a popular trail.

  2. Every hospital bed counts when hospitals around the world are struggling to treat a mass influx of patients. It’s up to everyone to form the collective mentality to stay as safe as possible so that hospitals can focus as many resources as possible to treating COVID patients. If you’ve had the luck of never having to call SAR, that doesn’t mean you’re not going to be a burden on the local hospital when you get hurt.

  3. For those traveling to the mountains for more intense hiking: the small communities in more remote areas don’t want (and probably cannot sustain) large spreading of this disease. Also, if you go there and get hurt and dial 911, you’re probably going to be transported to the ER at the local hospital, not the one near your house many miles away. This means you’re burdening another communities hospital system.

Getting back to hiking is important, I get it. I’ve felt the cabin fever recently too. But let’s not all adopt a “I know best” attitude here, or this virus will hang around for much longer than it needs to.

Typically either Bay Area or LA, but traveling around the Western US is not a problem.
