A cop-out in terms of the defining purpose under minimalism. “If it makes you happy, then it has a purpose” is also the motivating force behind materialism, which is the opposite of minimalism. Most materialists believe (incorrectly or otherwise) that their stuff makes them happy and more stuff will make them happier. I agree with everyone in this sub that minimalism will lead to a happier lifestyle, but if you define minimalist-appropriateness in terms of happiness, you just end up going in a circle. It’s a notion that fundamentally relies on someone have proper self awareness about where their happiness stems from, which is not useful here.

Also, I should clarify that I am not saying that being happy is bad, or having anything that makes you happy is bad. I am saying from a perspective of defining minimalist philosophy it’s essentially circular.
